I think it's more on the fact they revealed there best cards to soon. You have to remember that Rick and Morty came out it mostly looked like another Futurama 2.0. When shit like Morty almost getting raped, them abandoning their whole family and evil Morty were revealed, it came with genuine shock because nobody expected the show to take such dark left turns route.

But by season 2, all of this stuff was expected. We expected for things to get grim and Rick to not be exactly a hero, so now when it happens it no longer has that same impact. It's expected at this point and because of that it's lot some of the charm. Rick and Morty isn't likely to ever going to be as good as season 1 because nobody expected what season 1 was going to go until it actually had hit them.

It was but not to the extent season 3 and some of 2 seems to be. They'd make a meta discussion that'll last a couple seconds but then that'd be it and they'd move on. Season 3 they'd bring up said discussion and drag it out. Like the best example of overexplanatory joke in Rick and Mort S1 was when they were running away from Scary Terry and Rick and Morty talk about how instead of running they should just go hide. It was meta and talked about a bit but it didn't drag. Rick started off as a kinda neat jaded master of all is master of non character who was a good device to get alot of the plots started and was pretty funny. I do feel he has alot of the qualities which make him good but all the angsty shit does start to get in the way.

Morty was kinda half annoying but half enjoyable. Being the relatable character for the viewers did make his annoyingness a little more bareable but overall I feel his awkwardness and prelonged exposure to Ricks bullshit toughen'd him up.

Summer is kinda just a boring character desu. Just a typical teen character who kinda just feels like a filler character.

Jerry actually feels relatable in many fields, he pretty much a good way of saying "this loser is you" tho it was already established he was a bit of a loser in season 1, I feel season 2 and 3 seemingly are beginning to flanderize it or actually give him character development to be someone like the anti-rick, a jaded character who doesn't get angsty about.

Beth is a piece of shit who should be reduced to the status of road slut so she is forever fucked by aliens from around the universe. Nothing redeemable about her.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily fromNarodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. The "big reveal" is going to be how empty Rick feels his life has become and just how much rage he exerts as a result. It's like Breaking Bad, or The Sopranos, but with more jokes involving ICE/WATER-T.

It was a promising first season that got shot down by too many ideas all at once and shoehorned in a very lazy attempt at drama with no build-up.

I'd say it got caught up in its own popularity. A vast majority of people ate all the scraps they were given, awful jokes included, and left next to no feedback as to how Dan and Justin could improve the show. When left to their own devices they exploited some of the more "bottom of the barrel" ideas they offered up to places like Reddit and /co/ (i.e. Tiny Rick, the Council of Ricks, the drama that led to nowhere at the end of season 2, etc). Positive reinforcement can only go so far when the only constructive criticism left is a pat on the back.

Structurally, it's fucked. Character inconsistencies, themes that clash with the premise of what we were given in the first season, and the same one note "nihilistic with a wicked sense of humor" response we get from Rick every second his character's on screen drive home that Dan and Justin have no sense of direction. Bringing inexperienced and objectively bad writers rather than more editors or someone better at general QA was just the icing on the cake.

Yeah, but only so it convinces them that they need to go back to the drawing board and retool their approach to how a (good) AS comedy works.
I would love to see two friends who occasionally shitpost here for fun succeed in something they love doing, just if they put more effort into it.

Jerry is right about Rick but it doesn't change that he's a piece of shit too. Everyone shits on Jerry because he's an easy target. He is definitely partly to blame for that. He has little self respect and zero understanding for the people around him. It doesn't change that rick, morty, summer, and beth are shitty people but all of that is compelling to watch in a 30 minute show. Rick and morty just feels like ugly americans and gravity falls smashed together.
