First of all, Gravity Falls is not 2000s material.

It would seem that the 2000s (or at least, the non-shitty parts of them) did a lot better in variety. The action genre was covered by the original Ben10, Samurai Jack and Kim Possible, the tight continuity/lore was covered Avatar (which also fell under action, I guess), slice of life was covered by King of the Hill, and pure whacky comedy shows like Billy & Mandy, EEnE, Chowder, and others were pretty much the majority.

Now, in the 2010s, every show seems to follow Adventure Time (even if they don't intend to), as >>94334685 said. Every show nowadays is either just pure episodic comedy like early AT (Regular Show, Loud House, Gumball) or has a deep overarching plot and some comedy filler like Modern AT (SU, Star Vs, Gravity Falls, and now WttW). By the way, Milo Murphy's Law seems to be the odd child that combines the two.

The action genre has had basically nothing in the last few years other than SJ season 5 (ep 1-3) and maybe Korra; the slice-of-life genre has also been pretty forgotten since Hank Hill went away, with only WBB and Harvey Beaks (which don't get nearly enough attention)

Aesthetic. Cartoons had a bold look with really iconic design, thick outlines, that paid homage to design philosophy from the UPA/Hanna-Barbera days, but also embodied the look of the era, which was slick and futuristic. They just *look* more striking than what we have right now.

ATLA Book 3 did, but the drop is vastly exaggerated on /co/ and elsewhere.
