My favorite story from Bruce Timm was when he was talking about the followup to Batman Beyond. The network wanted the next Batman show to have actual kid characters. He was reluctant about the idea, but figured he could make Batman have three young apprentices. Then KidsWB started making all sorts of weird suggestions like having the kids collect Batman villains like Pokemon. Finally, the straw that broke the camel's back was when he was talking his pitch over with an exec, who asks him "What if the kids have to compete to decide who gets to become Batman?"

As soon as that phone call ended, he called up some other guy he worked on Batman Beyond with. I liked the way Wes Craven managed to write around executive meddling.
After having a good portion of Nightmare on Elm Street 2 cut because of the violence, he started incorporating into his movies huge quantities of unnecessary gore so that when the executives told him to tone it down, he'd be able to take away all the gore he didn't need and put exactly as much as he originally wanted.

My favorite story about getting around ratings is about Brian De Palma and Scarface.

The film was originally going to be rated X pretty much just because of the chainsaw scene. So Brian edited it down a bit and tried again to get an R. Got bounced. Tried three more times and got bounced each time.

So he tells the executives that there's no way he's going to cut that whole scene and it's either him or the scene. So Universal says, okay, let's appeal this.

So they have a meeting with the Rating Board about it that bring in a whole bunch of other people, who pretty much say "Yeah, an R-rating is okay for this."

So the MPAA gives in and De Palma looks at the version he cut to get an R and then at the original version and thinks "Hell, nobody could tell the difference anyway."

So he just submits the original version and that's what winds up in theaters.
