The passage on the right sums up what I love about Ellis.

Funny, I was just preaching how elegant the Gen 13 comic handled real issues teenagers face, and at the time I completely forgot about this.
But in a way it's a poetic irony, a perfect mirror of just what I was saying.
I recall reading a foreword where Ellis himself admits he wanted it to just be as visceral and disheartening as possible, nothing like Gen 13, but in doing so it ends up feeling way more cartoonish instead of real.
In vying to be the polar opposite of the Gen13's simplicity paying off in small douses, Ellis ended up doing too much too often and none of it adding up or just nothing at all.
Mental issues, substance, psychological and sexual abuse, pointlessly psychotic caretakers, complete and utter negligence, murder, the list goes on but it's a laundry list of problems without any answers or solutions. So it's not even a story, it's just a fucking checklist for Ellis.
Now, it's not the worst thing I've seen, it has its moments where the characters simmer down and seem to genuinely reflect and connect but seldom do they do so for long or meaningfully. Upon considering the intent and execution of G13 to DV8 t quickly becomes apparent how much you really can't judge a book by its cover or its writer or its subject matter. Dayum shame.
