The problem is Mike refuses to say what the benefits are to humans becoming more spiritual, either because he doesn't know what it means or because it strays too close to becoming religious for the censors.
The only two things I can think of is spirits can teach humans to respect nature more, or... they find some sort of way for humans and spirits to merge peacefully without a human getting killed in the process, but again, I don't know what the benefits of that could be. Someone in last night's thread for this suggested there be an recurring spirit character introduced to give us some sort of view on spirits that isn't just "we're vague and haughty and will kill you if you fuck up nature".

This was a bit weird. I can't say I like the series, but the reasons for my dislike are pretty much the same as they were for the animated series. The way the writers tweak the past interactions between Korra and Asami to imbue the past with a romance that was never there at the time, that's kinda irritating, but honestly I don't feel pushed away by the relationship. The characters behave pretty much as they used to, and the interactions are written pretty much as they were, and it's this sort of stuff that makes me not really like Korra's story.

Knowing the techniques while in the Avatar State is what the Avatar State used to be. Eyes glow and while glowing you are in that state. Or eyes glow and then stop glowing but you can do a powerful feat of bending. Another Avatar like being doesn't negate the power of the other, otherwise Unalaq and Korra would be matched for techniques but Korra would still have three elements over him.
The current Avatar still needs to learn bending (which isn't just punches and kicks but the mentality and culture of the respective nation and its people) since they can't always be in the Avatar State as it is a risk. I cannot see any other reason that makes sense. Avatar is already inundated with eastern religious shit; chakras, reincarnation, yin and yang, and so on. You don't need to get more religious when we're talking about concrete hard benefits, but the problem is that none exist. The whole spirit thing in Korra is stupid shallow eastern philosophy awkwardly welded onto feel-good progressive diversity dogma with no conceivable point. Think about how during book 2 and onward, people couldn't shut up about balance. It was apparently the ultimate good and yet no one can slow down and explain why it's so important or what the hell it even is, especially after fucking up the whole concept with the giant spirit tapeworms. In ATLA the concept applied very nicely to the four nations because it avoided dumb wars and mass bloodshed. In Korra there's fucking nothing aside from hollow assurances.

I don't have that image saved where the only way Unalaq didn't lose was the bad writing the plagued the whole show. Unalaq was an idiot for attacking the South when he didn't have to do anything. He could have taken Korra to the North Pole after she opened the Southern Portal and then said he is feeling unwell and asks her to go with Tenzin. He raises no suspicions and no problems are occurring and he's still on Korra's good side. Then when the time is right he can go meet Vaatu and fuse. It is only through even more amazing luck than the protagonists that he isn't defeated right from the start.

Honestly I wish they didn't make leaving the portals open Korra's big first decision she made on her own as herself, as opposed to just trying to do what her past lives would've done. It's been three years and if there are any obvious benefits to it they have yet to show. I actually did some thinking on this the other day. Why the fuck can't you just earthbuild new homes? Well, consider the coding required to create a reasonable living space in what is essentially the 20s. Poor codes, sure, but what if you want clean water and aren't a waterbender? You're going to need pipes. Heat if not a firebender? Stoves and insulation are required too, which comes from power. Metalbenders could potentially string wires through the houses. And ultimately you'd want to craft the frame and skeleton of the building out of some metal, to give structural integrity, and some kind of substance that can't be bent. After all, can you imagine how awful it'd be if you were in your apartment and a rogue Earthbender just toppled your entire complex?
Of course, based on what we've seen in Season 4, the buildings already in place are clearly earth, since Bolin and Lin toss them at Kuvira's mech.
So all that conceptualization of why it would be difficult and yet they still make it terrifyingly apparent that everyone lives under the scrutiny of Earthbender whims.

Yes because they needed Korra's first big decision made as Avatar Korra and not Avatar Korra speaking for Wan/Aang/Roku/Kyoshi to be... big. Korra's arc in book 2 was learning to realize and accept that she has a strength/wisdom/whatever unique to her that has nothing to do with being the Avatar, and that she needs to rely on that more often. That's why Tenzin tells her near the end that it's up to her to decide what to do when she asks him if she should close the portals.

Well to be fair the other two spirit portals are so fucking remote they don't cause that much trouble and RC seems to have created a compromise with the spirits in the three years between 3 and 4.
And places like that desert town looked downright chill with the little spirits.
Then again there was also Shai'hulud but that was apparently not a spirit.
So somehow that new portal seems to be fucking important to the spirits all of a sudden, maybe they see it as divine due to it's sudden creation. Asshole spirit was screeching about it being sacred.
