Do you people seriously not know how colorists work in the comics industry? You have pencils, then you have inks, then you have colorists. Sometimes you don't even have inkers anymore, sometimes the inks are laid down on a copy, and not the original pencils. Either way, when the art gets to the colorist, they scan it in and make the coloring on a seperate coloring layer. The colorist can only fuck up work that doesn't use lots of line work, generally. That kind of a fuck up would have to be pencisl or inking stage, in which the colorist would havae to try to fix it.

I didn't save it, but Doom getting an arrow through the head mid-speech is probably the ugliest shit I've ever seen on a page.

Ultimate Future Foundation.

It's Ultimate Universe Susan, Falcon, Machine Man, and Iron Man, with the final member being Dr. Doom. Fialkov was coming off the Ulimates, which was very solid, so a good bit of hype went into the book.

The artist however was complete shit and sunk the book as soon as the previews came out.

The page I posted was from the 2010 Boom comics run, which ran for like 12 issues, I think. Not even. It was really hyped because it was written by Warren Spector who went on and on about how much he loved Scrooge McDuck and really wanted to write a great story with the characters. Then he fucking blew it less than 3 issues in.

This pisses me off to no end. If you're going to have guns (or cars for that matter) in a comic, have reference material on hand. Small mistakes I can stomach, but when people are driving around in Kleenex boxes and pointing paper-towel-rolls at eachother it completely ruins the book.
Either do the mechanical shit properly, or just leave it out. Guns and cars only matter to gun&car people, and they don't appreciate it being half-assed, or, at least, I sure don't.

I'm a colorist, and I've done published books for Image. I can say most people in this thread have no idea what they're talking about and only know of the creative process watching artists do Twitch streams.

In this example, while the coloring is not great, the reason Catwoman looks so fucked is because of the inking, or lack thereof.

What you have to understand is that the colorist, unless given specific instruction to do so from the editor, is not allowed to alter the linework. If a colorist gets fucked lines, then he has to color in fucked lines. What happened here was probably that DC didn't want to pay for an inker on this book, and so they do what is called "digital inking." Again, if you're thinking that someone is going in with photoshop or an equivalent program and just drawing black lines over ever single pencil line, then you're wrong. That process, despite being done on Cintiqs and such these days, is still just called "inking," and is generally saved for bigger name books. "Digital Inking" is just taking the pencil lines and adjusting the black and white levels, usually with automated tools, like levels or dodge/burn. So if the penciller, which looks like this was the case in this instance, has really unclean linework (smudges and weak holding lines), when you do that automated process it's gonna look like shit. Look at where the eyes look the most fucked in the colored/"inked" art, and look how they were drawn in the pencils. That automated process/quick way of doing it is going to blast away those lighter greys.

Now, if you're going to ask why don't they just take the time to make the lines look nice, well...you should see what they pay.

Punching solid wood or concrete will only break your fingers. Now, does breaking your fingers have any benefit? Kind of. Every time a bone is broken it heals with excessive tissue, making it stronger. Breaking your hands a few times could have the benefit of making your bones thicker and stronger, but too many times would hinder the joints and mobility.
