Why are people pretending to be so offended and angry by this

Why are people pretending to be so offended and angry by this thing's existence...?
Its literally a whacky family movie about talking emojis, its not supposed to be taken seriously jesus christ.
No one cares that you manchildren have invented reasons to dislike this film, its probably going to make enough money to warrant a sequel from its target audience. Ya know kids?????
>>
Yeah, I don't really get it either. I'm not saying this movie is amazing, but understand the vehement outrage. Don't most people on this board like superhero movies? That's not exactly Andrei Tarkovsky either, is it?
>>
>>94254438
>pretending
Unlikely. People are just tired of how animation is here in the U.S.

It's a good thing people even off of here are giving it shit.
>>
>>94254438
It'll make money because audiences will reason it appeals to their tastes of texting culture and/or it's just a kids movie that doesn't need to be held to any standard. And if this is you, kill yourself. You're gumming up the theaters with junk that could be used to tell real stories with real creativity and not just be a shameless marketing plug.
>>
>>94254438
>Why are people pretending to be so offended and angry
They aren't pretending dude, this is unironically one of the worst kids movies to come out in the last decade (next to Mars Needs Moms) that has been funded by a major studio. The entire things is basically an ad for smart phones and then continues to advertise other stupid shit like dropbox, wechat, candy crush, just dance, etc. It had a plot line that has been recycled countless times, Wreck It Ralph and the Lego Movie come to mind. Those two things will sink any movie but that's ignoring the fact that it is a fucking movie about fucking emojis that nobody asked for or wanted.

The entire thing was a really thinly veiled cash grab aimed at children, which is disturbing. It's a horrible horrible movie in every way possible. Sure, the substance of the movie might not be as bad as people are making it out to be, but the emoji movie represents everything that is wrong with the animation industry right now.

It's a lazy piece of shit cash grab and it should be treated like one.

I wouldnt say Im mad, but Im annoyed it exists. Film making is dead and this movie is a good example of why that is. I dont like the fact that SONY thinks it can shit on a plate and expect people to enjoy it. Granted its not offensive or anything of the like, but it reeks of being fucking lazy, dated, and downright commercial
>>
>>94259052
Pay for a ticket to a good movie and then sneak in. Go to a cheap theater where the employees don't give a single fuck what you do as long as they don't have to clean it up.
>>
>>94254438
Quality wise its a far cry from kids movies from the 80's or even early 90's for that matter. Sure not all of it was great but the really good stuff had imagination, and dare I say ambition. They seemed to actually give a shit , rather than just saying " this is for kids so no need to try or anything".

It didn't feel like a cynical cash in, and as a kid I was inspired by them. They didn't try to insult me because I was underage.

I paid to see this movie ironically. It's not good by a long shot, but it's notably better than a 6% on Rotten Tomatoes. At least give it the 20-30% it deserves
>>
The movie itself is just trite kids garbage

The problem is everything the movie represents just as a concept for animation, maybe even film as a whole.
>>
>>94254438
It's pandering to millenials. Plus, it's a rip off of lego movie and wreck it ralph
>>
It's a mediocre trashy kids film but it's also working against a couple generations of "playground fads were better back in my day!".
>>
>>94254438
it probably has something to do with the fact that the prevalence of emojis is one of the most obnoxious aspects of the generation we're currently living in. their very nature is just tasteless and annoying. I realize not everyone feels that way; my mom sends me those things all the time. but even if you like the movie, you have to be very naive not to see what a cold, lifeless and blatantly exploitative premise this is - regardless of how good the movie turns out to be. not to mention the concept of small inanimate objects living separate lives alongside but unbeknownst to humans got old like 20 years ago.
>>
>>94254438
The problem is that it is a shameless advertisement. It states that you don't have to put any effort into making a film, just throw up some blatant advertising messages and people will pay YOU to go and see it.

Tackling the status quo? Challenging audiences? Messing with expectations?! Pshaw! Put some flashing colors on screen and people will come and see it!

It kind of undoes any post-Reagen-era progress the medium had accomplished as far as being taken seriously in the world of film.

And we are offended and angry because the money and time and effort spent on this film could've been used to make something far better than this. "The Emoji Movie" is pandering garbage that doesn't know who it wants to pander to - a film lacking anything resembling a reason to exist beyond tax write-offs. It was an attempt to capitalize upon a cultural fad and replicate the success of "The Lego Movie", but without any of the charm or wit or quality. If 4chan actually supported emojis, I would put the middle finger emoji right here.

>You're going to tell me that a movie about smartphone culture clearly shouldn't have references to the most popular aspects of it?

Should it have references? Yes. Should it have outright advertisements for services like Snapchat? Fuck no.

It's just so blatantly an ad for a bunch of different products, which was typical in the 80s (shameless ads/corporate garbage with no effort or care put in pretending to be cartoons) but we've gotten away from a little bit. It's obnoxious to constantly have brands shoved in your face to take your money, see "native advertising." It leads to a feeling of shallowness, meaninglessness, and cynical selfishness. Some people are reacting against this on a gut level now and are pissed off about the whole corporate culture. So it's not just about a bad movie.

It is entirely possible for an adult to think a show aimed at children is also insulting to children. Look at TTG: It panders to the kind of kids who love WACKY RANDOM COLORS EVERYWHERE bullshit and offers nothing else.
>>
>>94270564

It would, yes, but we live in a world where "ironic" "hatewatching" is a thing, which means people would rather watch a horrible movie for the "irony" than watch a good movie and be sincerely entertained.
>>
>>94272625
Where do you think we are?
>>
>>94273097
No, people watch bad things so that their criticisms can be made valid. Otherwise you get people accusing you of not even watching the movie so any comments you have are invalid. It's the same thing with vidya, you can't criticize a game you've never played
>>
>>94273068
So fucking what, you watched that shit when you were a kid too. Let them have their cartoons
>>
>>94273133

>people watch bad things so that their criticisms can be made valid

I don't need to watch a piece of shit like "The Emoji Movie" to know that it is a piece of shit. The trailers and TV ads alone tell me that. I would only need to watch it to discuss it in any depth beyond the generalized criticisms I have levelled at it -- and I am not going to watch that movie just so I can have deep, thoughtful discussions about it with random fuckheads on an anonymous imageboard that does more to spread bile, hatred, and disgust with humanity than it has ever done to spread intelligence, robust debate, and a sense that humanity is pretty okay in small doses.
>>
>>94273179

Why shouldn't we want better for our kids? Why should we want them to like complete bullshit? We can -- and should -- expose them to content that has at least some value beyond "IT KEEPS THEM QUIET FOR A WHILE, THANK GOD".

>>94273254

>harmless

TTG teaches kids that it's okay to be an asshole to your friends because it's funny.

>>
>>94273306
That attitude is exactly what got animation into its rut in the 70's. "Hurr it's just for kids who gives a shit about quality they'll watch something else anyway" resulted in one of the darkest periods in the history of western animation. And it's a natural to want better for your kids, letting them wallow in mediocrity just because you did is shit parenting.

>>
>>94273445

People watch bad things because it boosts their ego. You ever notice how some people can write paragraphs about movies they dislike and how shitty they are, but can't say anything other than a couple of sentences about movies the like? That's because they don't watch movies for entertainment, they watch cinema to boost their ego. If they can't make themselves feel better by hating on a shitty movie (i.e. subconsciously reminding themselves that they're not the ones that made a shitty movie and therefore they're a better person), they don't get anything out of the film. Enjoy your post-millenial film critics.

>the international market saved it money wise, don't move the goalposts
Any movie can "make it's budget back" and had Warcraft not been planned for that cinematic universe, I would wholeheartedly agree with you but since they clearly planned for it to be this long spanning thing and it's own movie universe, it's clear it didn't save shit. With your logic, the new Ghostbusters movie was "saved" as well but that ended up costing Sony big time

Pacific Rim is an anomaly, not even remotely normal or common.
