Both, obviously. People just don't fucking understand that watching bad movies, and I mean absolutely bad movies, isn't "fun" if you're going to go in the fucking theaters to do it. There are so many alternative ways to watch the movie if your curiosity forced you to watch, but people have to be "ironic".

Sony's upcoming animated movies.jpg

Here's what we have to look forward to from Sony in 2017 and 2018 in terms of animated movies.

* A holiday movie that takes place in the first Christmas involving animals

* More Hotel Transylvania.

* An animated Spider-Man film.

No Popeye still.

Will any of these be good? Is there still hope for Sony's animated department?

This. Also, just found out about some Studio Ghibli Fest going on at some theatres, if you're into that.

I have a question. 27.5m+ is too good for this POS. Hollywood should not be rewarded for shit.

How is this POS at 6% RT making that much? Come on parents, you rejected so many shitty animated films like Penguins of Madagascar, Storks, Planes, Planes 2, Smurfs 2 & 3, Alvin & The Chipmunks 4, Ninja Turtles 2, What happened?

I remember 6 years ago when parents chose squeaking blow chunks over a fabulous globetrotting animated adventure. That was very sad to see happen... In 2013/2014, I thought parents were getting wiser with how to tell which animated films are crap. What's so special about talking crap?
>>
>>94240285
I'll admit I am curious what they'd do in a sequel...
>>
>>94240470
The cast is just very strange. A Walking Dead actor, some actors from other animated movies, a has been pop star, a woman who sung the Wicked soundtrack, talk show host, a girl who felt guilty about masturbating, fucking Fluffy, Tyler fucking Perry, and another has been pop star with her last hit since 2009!
>>
>>94240261
Not to mention how shitty the animation looks. Emoji Movie might make $100 million sadly but it will do no favors for Sony Animation's reputation. The Star might not even make $20 million.
>>
>>94240495
The new tactic is to pour millions into marketing.

They realized a couple years ago that recognition is fucking everything and have the means now to ads for shitty movies into your billboards, TV, cat videos, etc...The normie mind has never been so accessible.
>>
>>94240465

Well then, why wouldn't Leap!, Despicable Me 3 or even Cars 3 be the one to take the cake?

They are also animated films for the summer and they have celebrity voice actors (Leap! is actually a French movie which was then dubbed into English), Leap! even had a top-charting theme song (Cut to the Feeling).

Why does it have to be The Emoji Movie?

In This Corner of the World wouldn't probably do that well here in North America since it's only in Japanese with English subtitles, it's rated PG-13, it's about World War II and it's only getting a limited release.

Your Name. did pretty well here in North America for a limited release anime film but it's not exactly a blockbuster.

I already saw all of those movies (I saw Leap! earlier because the Blu-ray is already out in Europe and Canada) except for The Emoji Movie and from what I saw, Leap! would be probably what would attract mainstream audiences the most (an all-star voice cast for the English dub, original pop songs including Cut to the Feeling, which is a current top-charting one, great CGI animation, especially for a studio that isn't American, fun overall tone, and a decent enough story) while the best movie of all of them would be Your Name..

Because many people are already kind of tired of the Minions, many people think Cars is one of Pixar's weakest films and some people won't live down Cars 2, which is commonly agreed to be Pixar's weakest film of all time.
And again, In This Corner of the World won't do well because of the PG-13 rating and the fact that it's only getting a limited release in Japanese with English subtitles.
Your Name. did very well when you consider that it only had a limited release but it was hardly a blockbuster.

I expect that either The Emoji Movie or Cars 3 will make the most bucks in the box office in terms of animated films, while I hope Leap! will make the most money in terms of animated films, because Your Name. is already off cinemas and it only got a limited release while In This Corner of the World will most likely not do that well for the reasons I already stated.

But if Mary and the Witch's Flower gets localized and released in the US this year, plus it gets a wide release, I'm hoping that one will do very well in the box office.

Hopefully, Mary and the Witch's Flower won't be localized by Lionsgate, especially with their unforgettable blunder called Norm of the North.

In order for the movie as a stand-alone to make back its cost, Emoji Movie would need a box office income of about $220m.
It's unlikely to make that much money, but that doesn't mean it is a total loss for Sony.
>Sony can write off any losses against profits in better performing movies (e.g. Spider-Man)
>Sony will make some money off merchandise
>Sony advertised some of it's child companies
>Sony would have been paid to advertise the ones it didn't own.
If it makes at least $100m they can probably call it a success.

Well, it is, but Sausage Party was also made on incredibly harsh conditions for the animators. It was almost Japan levels

Stressful conditions =/= Slave labour
>>
>>94242777
People weren't paid, they would work them for 19 to 22 hours a day without breaks. They'd also get harassed by Sony execs because the animation staff would look dead, but not "dead enough."

People who got sick were told to keep working or they were fired. People asking to go to the bathroom would have wages cut, people going to get food were told to clear out their station because they were fired.

Animators tried asking the stars and writers behind the project for help, all they did was laugh about it or call them fucking pussies. Seth Rogan was known for being a dick to the animators when they asked for time off to be with their families or attend events like funerals, he'd call them whiny lil bitches or use the intercom to tell people on multiple floors that an animator has a stinky pussy, a tiny cock, or saggy granny titties.

There's a point where this goes from, "Yeah, an air conditioning unit is on the fritz and we are sweltering in this heat" and "I think I've gone blind in my left eye, oh...I'm fired...uh...okay"

Meanwhile movies like Kubo and the Two Strings or The Little Prince struggle to break even, discouraging studios to make animation that doesn't fit the mould. The power of the meme is strong this year. Guys like Jacksfilms who have been sent to the highest level of meme irony have made this movie desirable. We are now at the point at which people see movies not because they like them, but so they can meme ironically in the theatre with their friends, and that includes ironically Fidget Spinning and dabbing. Plus, there's always parents who are so stupid and take their kids to anything, including trite that can hurt their young minds like this ad supported shite. There needs to be a PSA about toxic animated films or something. We have to stop Sony from doing this shit and other companies too. It only ruins animation as an art form and makes the big studios strive for easy targets and try less. Think of the children.

A lot of voters (not most) went for Trump, because they knew about some of Clinton's seedier past. Many autistic /pol/acks made it their job to spread the infographics of Hillary's dirty laundry everywhere, which picked up by FOX and conservative media, and I'm sure that made a significant effect in many voters mind
>>

You seem to believe that the person I was replying to want doing that same thing, and that I simply gave out my view contrast to his.
>>
>>94239705
The word already exists.

Clickbait. Hollywood clickbait. Studios are realizing they don't have to make something good to make money, they just have to make something bad and people will pay to see it just to make fun of it. There's no difference to them whether a ticket is bought normally or ironically, they make the same money either way.

And the general movie audience doesn't seem like they'll be wising up any time soon.
>>
>>94244628
I misread /sg/ for /tg/ and my heartbeat went up
>>
>>94244652
So, I'm wrong in assuming that 4chan (/pol/) organizing Hillary's dirty laundry and spreading it online, which later was picked up by conservative to broadcast to roughly half the country's voter base didn't have an effect?

Why can't you just admit it had an effect? I'm not saying it's the biggest factor, I'm saying it was a factor. Many fence sitters went with Trump because "Hillary was worse", citing her shady shit. Shady shit that FOX and conservative media take about after it gained traction on Twitter. Which was organised by... Autists on /pol/.

I think it's totally possible that 4chan gave Trump a small nudge that turned out crucial for the election results. /pol/acks were making a lot of content that got spread elsewhere on the net. From what I heard, Sony spent well over $50 million on the marketing budget for the film. That is, while most marketing budgets are equal to the film's production cost, Sony spent far more than that.
So they're going to have to make at least $100 million to $150 million to be in the red. At ten million on day one isn't a particularly good sign, especially with the film's critical reputation.

To follow up on this, here's an easy example of Sony's marketing for the film: For some reason, Sony decided to "crash" the Cannes Film Festival by having a press junket to launch the film's trailer. This involved commandeering a pier with Emoji Movie branding and whatnot, putting on costumes...

/pol/ - pure alt-right, believe in jews, worship hitler unironically, wants to deport niggers back to africa, etc.

/the_donald/ - watered down, palatable alt-right, right wing fed up with the establishment, might think in the back of their head that black people are bad but won't act on it in big ways.

I don't think you understand how movie companies work. Unless people are rioting in the street over it, they couldn't care less about their 'image' as long as they make their money back. And I'll be fair, why should they? They made a low effort movie with low effort storytelling and are probably going to be financially rewarded for it. Sure, the critics will cry foul left and right but their critique probably means a lot less to Sony than the 5 year old who bought a ticket and the homemaker who bought the DVD to keep her kid quiet for an hour.

Did a couple of janitors accidentally kill the person responsible for scheduling, and are trying to pull off a Weekend at Bernie's, filling in the schedule as best they can without getting into whacky corspe-based situations?

I'm so fucking disappointed to learn that Sony is going to fuck up Beatrix Potter. Why did it have to be her? Why couldn't a better studio do this?

I thought Blue Sky was bad, but I think Sony might be my least favorite studio right now.

Also she is 6.

Movie was bad but not 0% bad, Transformers was worse in every way, shape and form.

Why didn't you buy a ticket for another movie and sneak in the Emoji Movie? Theatres don't give a shit.

I hear it's pretty good. Minimal dialogue, nice visuals, focus on the atmosphere.
>>
>>94253991
Nice. Does Harry Styles have a song in the film?
>>
>>94253986
Not him, but dragging a 6 year old into a situation where there's even a little chance of either the theater's authority giving you a stern talking to, or someone whose seat you took bitches at you and makes it clear you did something wrong is pretty fucked up.
6 year olds aren't cynical enough to brush it off as "just a thing people do".
>>
>>94254217
I'm sure there aren't booked seats at a theater only 3 movies are playing at. Other anons talk of doing it all the time and never getting caught.

Maybe a small bump, but the people who post on reddit have a larger internet sway (not that I think that r/the donald and /pol/ is much different now-a-days). Not that the average normie who voted for Trump saw much of it. I think the idea that Hillery was crooked was already a thing they already accepted just from Fox news alone.

If anything, the 2016 election killed /pol/ as it was, I remember what It was like before Trump was a thing, and it was very different than it is now.

Because corporate executives are not in the 'making good films' business, they are in the 'copying something successful and hoping its good for the pure purpose of making as much money as possible with as little risk as possible', so they are using proven formulas and applying it to something popular (in this case, emojis) hoping its the next wreck-it-ralph or Toy Story or the Lego movie without looking at or caring about what made those movies good in the first place.

>Breach of contract is protected by ancapism
We don't live in an ancap society, so why didn't the great and perfect state solve this problem? The studio being accused is in Canada, which is far more left than the US in terms of economics, so even if you have legitimate grievances (which there is no proof of) the blame is on Canada's lousy bureaucracy, not "ancap slave labor."

>Animators end up quitting left and right while being threatened with industry blacklist
Blacklisting is the employer equivalent of a boycott. If you think boycotting is fair, then you should think blacklisting is fair. If a certain employer steals from cash registers, I can contact another business saying not to hire him.

Irony has gone too far.

We must kill it like the millennials killed the word "literally".

We must make post-irony ironic, and irony genuine, and genuine post-ironic until everything sucks and no one knows how to like something without actually liking it anymore.

Also, blame the other major movie studios for not releasing any high-caliber family film around the same time. The last one I can remember coming out is Despicable Me 3 which came out almost a month ago. The only competition this movie has in its own category coming out very soon is THE NUT JOB TWO!

>>94258802
I'm not saying directly visiting /pol/ is what helped Trump out. The number one marketing tool right now is word of mouth through the internet. Memes are the primary way of doing this currently.
/pol/ memes spreading through reddit, twitter, and facebook helped to normalize Trump in the average normalfag's eyes. Not to mention all the people putting in a vote to oppose Hillary.

>Right now the emoji movie is the worst reviewed animated movie of all time.

That says more about the reviews than the movie. It's bad, don't get me wrong, but it's far from the worst animated film of all time, but it's mostly just bland and unfunny, and feature length commercials are pretty standard for children's films. Frankly, I'd imagine a lot of parents would prefer this to minions yelling in their face for an hour and a half.

I didn't like the film by any means, but I find the whole internet getting triggered by it's mild success more satisfying than the though of it failing.
