I was reading old Marvel "What Ifs" today and man it feels like a lot of more recent stories got real mileage out of those.

Spider-Man w/ a machine gun hanging around with the Black Panthers fighting the fascist Cap state really made me wish that Spider-Nam pitch had been picked up.

I think Age of Ultron and CW2 both underperforming as big events hurt his star, finally, especially CW2. And the people who are inclined to like and give a character like Riri a fair chance are also the people who are going to read most critically and specifically for issues of representation and he's not cutting it with them now at all.

Then there's Homecoming repurposing Ganke and then Bendis trying to repurpose Ganke into Ned.

What a hoot.
>>
>>94232631
I haven't actually read a lot of Marvel stuff in general (which is probably due to me finding way more DC stuff on torrents compared to Marvel stuff years ago). I think the only Bendis books that I have read were Alias/Pulse and his Daredevil. His disdain for superheroes was very evident in Alias, but I liked his DD when I first read it. Reading it a second time through a storytime here made me realize that it does not make 100% narrative sense, and was also crapping on some old continuity.
>>
>>94232597
It reminds me of that "continuity shackles good creators to the bad" quote. But every bad writer thinks that they're one of the good ones.

I'm still surprised that Civil War 2 sold so many damn copies. Someone made a chart that I saved of the last ~6 big marvel events, and CW2 performed amazingly despite how crappy it was.
The chart also shows how low the SE sales are
>>94232804
I wonder if we can find someone who took both his and Snyder's classes on writing
>>
>>94232839
Dumb people tend to be pretty insecure, OP.
>>
>>94232684
In the eyes of critics and readers he is (partially because of the goldfish memory of the industry lately) but I think he has so much status at Marvel politically that he'd have to personally take the blame for several massive flops before it'd really affect him.

We don't really know what Marvel is saying internally about CWII but I imagine if they recognize it as underperforming they blame it on something other than Bendis' horrid writing style not playing anymore.

The thing with Bendis is he's one of the most senior writers still working exclusively for Marvel. We all know seniority and ass-kissing are the two things that will get you anywhere in any industry, but Bendis especially has no one to stop him. Off the top of my head Slott is the only one who could possibly match him in terms of seniority, and Slott claims that he does a lot of internal fighting with various people of higher influence who have a specific vision for Spider-Man.

Cavengers really seems like it was just an idea that Aaron had for a regular story and now it has been shanghaied into being the launching point for a new thing.

I think I'm going to read The Obsidian Age again though
>>
>>94232890
The only nice thing I can say about Bendis is that his dismissive attitude and smug sense of superiority come off like he thinks he's being charming rather than Byrne who behaves like a literal baby.

>>94232984
Started as a longterm storytime of JSA, lead to storytiming things ancillary to JSA, and eventually just lead to whatever felt like it fit our tastes.

Some have joked that it's not "Just Storytiming Anything".

This gets asked every third thread or so but I felt like giving an actual answer tonight.

>>94232978
Yeah, it disappointed me a bit because of how expertly Hernandez's art capture the storytelling style of Golden Age comics and how well Seth replicated that Will Eisner feel.

I dunno about 60's, though, it seems like a precursor to all the stylized art in Vertigo comics we got.

this happens a lot and the result is never good for the idea itself.

Cavengers immediately seems like a sad, desperate gimmick. It's like one of those absurdly shit parodies The Flinstones would do back in the day.

The mammoth mounted Ghost Rider alone evokes nothing but pity from me. Seriously, Marvel, are you actively trying to destroy your dignity? Cause you're doing an excellent job of it.

I would be OK with doing something as ridiculously historically inaccurate as 1M BC just for Rule of Cool if it was more like Monsters Unleashed and being pushed as an opportunity to do something fun with forgotten characters and concepts.

But instead, it's being pushed as Marvel's Next Big Event™.

Which lends further credence to what anon here >>94233123
said. It was Aaron's pitch for a crossover, someone at Marvel said "hey that has to do with the past, our Legacy thing kinda has something to do with the past, let's combine them! That Reborth thing everyone likes was set up for a crossover at the end, right?"
>>

I would be cool with it if they leaned into the aspect of it being totally bananas. I guess we have to wait to see the actual book to say whether it will be but my prediction is it will not.

Like Snyder kept talking about how Metal was going to be intentionally over the top inspired by black metal and classic heavy metal lyrics, but so far I have yet to see any level of genre-awareness in the issues that are out.

But Invasion is supposed to be about the tide turning and we've seen some evidence of that RECENTLY.

>>
>>94233571
See, this is one of the big problems with superheroes nowadays. They take themselves way too seriously. People running around fighting crime in colorful costumes is an inherently silly concept. Then Watchmen happened, and suddenly all this wackadoo shit that happens in cape books is treated with total sincerity and severity. And this likely won't change until the current industry collapses.
>>
>>94233571
Like straight up I tuned out on Metal from the initial announcement. Remember that one publicized Marvel summit? How did people LOL @ that and not at this? I mean:

>SNYDER: Greg is … metal. I have this idea that has to do with metal. Batman discovers a big mystery that is seeded in the history. He finds this metal in Hawkman’s mythology and something dark is coming. Dark Days introduces those concepts and then our summer event blows it out of the water.

>There’s a reason in this story that there’s “dark” in the title. Dark Matter, Dark Energy. Things in science that I love.

>LEE: Lee: Dinosaurs! Lasers! These lasers cut people in half. What i love about this is, at its core, its about Batman and his relationship with the Justice League (Wonder Woman and Superman). It touches you, it’s not just all pyrotechnics. It keeps bringing up new ideas.

>Capullo elaborates that they’re “opening doors nobody thought we were gonna go through… the promo I did was Batman holding two battle axes, so this is the kind of crazy stuff we’re gonna see in this.”

I'm there for the fucking crazy story just like you are, but come ON. Try and say that shit with a straight face.
