Is this the most underappreciated masterwork out there?

I see people debate and shit post about numerous other works but no mention of Usagi Yojimbo

Why does it get so little attention?
>>
>>94213628
Because it's good, and that pretty much ends discussion. It's the same thing with Hellboy.
>>
>>94213680
I don't get why there are constant threads about shit titles.
>>
>>94213628

>>

hell when was the last time we had a Bone
>>
>>94213680
>It's the same thing with Hellboy.

Not really. Hellboy is much more well known and pushed in shops and media.

Usagi Yojimbo is criminally underrated and even ignored.
>>
>>94213824
>hell when was the last time we had a Bone

Also not talked about as much but people have heard of Bone or seen it in stores. I've seen Bone at fucking Barnes and Noble.
>>
>>94213794
I think part of the problem is that other books are easier to break into small segments and discuss. Cape books are really easy for this. Long running epics are much harder to break down to digestible bits.
>>
>>94213628
Take this furfag weeaboo shit back to >>/a/.
/co/ (and most of 4chan) consists mostly of shit posting, bait posting and anons who fall for it. Series that are almost universally considered good aren't usually brought up, because there is very little shitpost potential for them. Not to mention that they've been discussed to death already.

When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all.
>>
>>94213680
It can be hard to articulate why something is good, especially if it is very good, as the craft vanishes behind the effect it creates.
>>
I need to grab the new collection, it has Space Usagi and all the other random bits outside the main series.
>>
I like it when it plays out a vagabond hero story but twists it, like when Usagi saves a town from being run off so the corrupt magistrate could mine the gold in their hills but the villagers (nor Usagi) never actually learn what was going on so they don't even realize what he did and so fail to appreciate him for it. Indeed they blame him for bringing violence to their town when the magistrate sends assassins after him.

The village cutie's expected attraction to Usagi is shallow and born from boredom and the one young man brave enough to stand up and fight does it against USAGI in competition for that girl. Usagi also just threatens to kill him because he's fed up with all this shit instead of mentoring him or gently beating him to teach him what little skill he really has.

Another time he brought a doll instead of the baby a villain demanded to trick him. This backfired terribly when the baby's mother, who didn't know Usagi's plan, threw herself in front of the doll to protect it from attack and was killed.
>>
>>94214406
Space Usagi is decent but that pales when so much of the main series is excellent. I do appreciate how space Usagi and space Gen, etc. have genuinely different circumstances even if their personalities are almost the same. It stops it from being, well, just Usagi Yojimbo in space.
>>
Anyone see the Nick TMNT episode about him recently? It's so fucking good.
>>
>>94214506
No, do you have a source or remember what episode it was?
>>

>>
>>94213628
I'd argue that Cerebus is probably more underappreciated due to people's dislike of Dave Sim, but in the modern era I'd say the Usagi is the most snubbed. It's terrible to see the consistently bad sales that are even lower than Hellboy and most of the Mignolaverse off shoots. The one nice thing about it is that it is an incredibly loyal reader base. The sales barely fluctuate, so while it's not really gaining readers it sure as fuck isn't losing them.

>>
>>94214809
I've only discovered Usagi in the last 2 years (30 now, started reading comics around 13). It's ignored more than Cerebus.
>>
>>94214838
For example, issue #153 (the last issue that I can locate in Comichron) only sold 4,269 copies.

>>94214972
Usagi Yojimbo gets the boost from TMNT fans. Cerebus has to rely solely upon word of mouth from Cerebus fans.

At least on /co/, I would say that Usagi Yojimbo has a bigger fanbase and Cerebus is more underappreciated.
>>
>>94213739

I think people feel smarter when they're hating something.
>>
>>94213911

It helps that bone has an omnibus and so can easily be treated as a single work.

>>
>>94213628
Stuff /co/ universally believes good don't get threads that last long. Example: Venture Bros.
>>
>>94215243

I truly don't believe that /co/ has a universal opinion on Usagi Yojimbo. I'm pretty sure most people here don't really read many comics.
>>
Has anyone ever seen anyone post Groo the Wanderer here?
>>
>>94215604
Yes. Thanks for asking.
>>
>>94215604
Groo gets mentioned on occasion.
>>
>>94215642

How often? That was going to be one I posted for possibly less appreciated comic.
>>
>>94215700
Less often than Usagi and less often than Cerebus. But I also don't think that it's as good as them.
>>
>>94215604
I've never read any of the modern Dark Horse stuff, I have a few of the old Epic issues. The humor holds up well
>>
>>94213739
Shit things have more varied opinions which generates lengthy discussions, things that are universally liked cant last that long cause most of people are gonna agree in most points.
>>
>>94215729

I can see that. It's not focused on drama almost at all. I'm less familiar with Usagi Yojimbo though.
>>
>>94215755

But people can talk extensively about great works. Look at any type of literary analysis. Why are fandoms that are traditionally considered nerdy so focused on negativity.

Maybe it's the music critic effect?
>>
>>94215797
>Look at any type of literary analysis.
Sincerity is mocked on 4chan. Any sincere literary analysis of a comic which lasts more than a couple paragraphs is likely to be lambasted as tryhard, pretentious and tl;dr.
>>
>>94213628
It's western comic kino along with Hellboy and Bone.
>>
>>94215797
I think it's the environment. When's the last time you went to a 4chan thread and expected 100% constructive discussion and fascination? Trying to have serious discourse here is like conducting a business meeting at an Arby's.
>>
>>94215820

I know that in my heart. But it always feels bad to admit. I think it's an internet issue in general, I remember cynicism being the norm even back in old IRC chats.
>>
>>94215797
Because fandom is awful
>>
A while ago someone storytimed the whole thing, which took weeks and had interesting things to say about the series and 17th Century Japan, etc.

It must have taken a lot of effort.
>>
>>94215098
I find that Usagi is more satisfying to read in trades so I'm not entirely surprised that single issue sales aren't great.
>>
>>94215840

Though I say that, and then I recall seeing old letters to the editors from the 70s and the shit is the same then too. Maybe it's just that many people don't like comics anymore, but they are unwilling to find other hobbies. So they continue doing it, and they grow bitter about their lives and their perceived lack of joy.

I know on /v/ I frequently see people straight up talking about how they don't enjoy video games anymore but that's all they know and so they continue playing. Maybe that's just fanbases in general.

The Fantagraphics stuff is out of print (I am incredibly lucky to have snagged a copy on ebay a year or two ago) but the Dark Horse era collections are easy to get.

I don't know how big of a problem it would be to just jump in. There's continuity but individual pieces of it expire after a while. The story of the blind pig is concluded, for instance.
>>
>>94216396
You can start at the Dark Horse stuff just fine. That's what I did. Acquired a Fantagraphics edition later.
>>
>>94216109
Grasscutter is what got me into Usagi so that's usually what I like to recommend to people. But really you can pick up any Usagi trade and it will be pretty good, there's never a barrier to understanding the current story.

>Why does it get so little attention?

Because it NEVER got a cartoon. Do you really think that comics are an accessible mainstream medium? Get real. TMNT to this day would be obscure if it didn't have a cartoon. Other mediums lead to exposure and from what I hear the creator of Usagi despises the Animation Is For Stupid Kids Just Like YOU mentality of the industry so he doesn't try to do a full blown cartoon about his creation and satisfies himself with a few episodes in each TMNT cartoon.

But a full blown cartoon? No way. He knows he will be censored because Usagi KILLS a chunk of antagonists.
>>
>>94216710
I have most of the Dark Horse Volumes. They don't really do that.

>>94216109

The first three books are mostly standalone issue length stories; the fourth one is the first volume length story.

Daisho is easily one of the best standalone books with a volume length story and gives you a great insight into who Usagi is as a person.

The twelfth book Grasscutter is probably still the single best volume, especially if you count Mother of Mountains and Tomoe's Story as being one story, but works better if you've read some of th previous books since they introduce a lot of the really important characters and plotlines.

So I'd suggest either The Dragon's Bellow Conspiracy or Daisho but that's me.

Four reasons:
-it's an anthro comic
-it's a comic about historical Japan
-it isn't published by DC or Marvel
-no titty monsters in skin tight costumes

I get a little grumpy when someone says it's historically accurate because Sakai clearly made a deliberate decision to excise firearms despite them having been used in Japan for decades by that point and not to mention that gunpowder weapons existed for centuries in East Asia before then, just not the good one-man guns the Japanese got from the Portuguese.

So my autism gland goes in a twist when Usagi and company talk about "the foreign black powder that explodes".

The flying batninjas, demons, and dinosaurs are another indication.

Speaking of batninjas, I'm surprised by how quickly Sakai killed the last waifu. Characters tended to last a bit more in the early issues. I wonder if it's due to his personal life.

Gold digger is technically over 300, but not in a single run. It's like ~10, ~50 and then the current ~250.
Cerebus is 300, even though it's really 298 because of the two double issues. Spawn is ~270, Savage Dragon is ~220, Usagi is in the ~210 range if you just count the main ongoings.

>>
>>94218610
Well I think the thing is that it has selective accuracy. If Sakai wants an aspect of the story to be accurate he does a ton of research on it, if he doesn't then it's not. Any time the story focuses on a specific traditional art form, craft, or tradition it's usually spot on. Like the Tea Ceremony issue.
>>
No shit and no hyperbole:

Sakai is probably the best storyteller in comics I've ever read. Some stuff he does in Yojimbo both from the art and writing standpoints are just too good.

Wish it was licensed in my country.

Stan did a signing a few weeks ago that fell on our anniversary weekend, so I surprised my husband with a trip down to San Diego for it. Had a great weekend and spent way too much money at the comic art museum.

Got this original piece of Jei, and Stan signed and sketched our gallery edition.

It was a little sad though, as Eastman was there too and even though there was a huge crowd very few people seemed to know who Stan was or give a shit about him... they all just wanted to suck Eastmen's cock.
>>
>>94239513
Because Eastman's creation the TMNT is better known courtesy of easily accessible cartoons and a chunk of theatrical movies. People do NOT read comics.

If Stan isn't willing to sell out and milk his creation in many shitty cartoons and mediocre movies, no one will care about Usagi and no one will care about him. People do not read comics and never will.
>>
>>94232609
Boris the Bear is fucking hilarious, shame it's never been collected.
>>
>>94239063
>proper Usagi series
Unless Stan wants to waive some rights over, no company will invest. Suits are greedy fucks.

>>94239642
>>94239513
Yeah, Stan loves his creation way too much to give some corporate fuckers creative control. Integrity has a price, though.
>>
>>94239642

I still feel like he could be more well known. I have nothing but respect for any artist that retains some fraction of integrity but I think nowadays especially he could probably work out something to get a series going
>>
>>94229821
Duel at Kitanoji showed how screwed the samurai system was. Master swordsmen should have killed bandits and invaders instead of each other just to prove who was better. But that's the consequence of peacetime under Tokugawa.
>>
>>94239909

Id argue damn near every other chapter showed how fucked the samurai system could be. It seems damn near every day someone has to kill themselves, throw their kid off a cliff or some other fucked shit.
>>
>>94239801
Tough situation, not every series created is something like Over The Garden Wall where it obviously doesn't have any toyetic angle or acts as a commercial for merchandise.

And something like Usagi Yojimbo is going to have a hard time making a case for itself. Once your average person or suit hears "anthro rabbit" they instantly will think shit for kids like Kung Fu Panda, Thundercats, Sly Cooper, or the worst of the bunch, Sonic the Hedgehog (and I still think Sonic Boom is trash since it's comedy comes from acknowledging that Sonic and Sega are shit, that doesn't paint a positive picture).

Basically Stan's main creation is stuck in limbo.
>>
>>94216109
Usagi Yojimbo special edition
>>
>>94240060
>Sega are shit

Yeah Sega are so shit that when they saw people making fan games of their properties they hired them on the spot and helped make their big fan game a reality.

Fuck you.
>>
>>94240104
Fuck you. It shows they don't got any internal talent when they rely on fucking fans who make rom hacks for fan games. It really show Sonic Team is trash.
>>
>>94213628
Im so glad i meet stan last year.
>>
>>94240156
And also before I forget the novelty of playing Classic Sonic has expired. Sonic Forces has no business doing this crap, but hey here we are. Sonic truly is garbage. Once people tire of milking Classic Sonic it will be the end of that nonsense and Sega will have less chance to milk the hedgehog.

And enabling the stupid fanbase to make their own Original Characters in Forces is fucking stupid. Hope it bites them in the ass down the line.
>>
>>94240185
>No one should be allowed to have fun the way I don't them too

yeah yeah, you're complimentary Switch is in the mail
>>
>>94240185
I know it feels good to point out the obvious, but you don't have to jerk yourself off over it. Kids and manchildren will like what they like, and Usagi Yojimbo threads will float on the edge of obscurity until an act of God makes all-age anthro media mainstream.
>>

Jei's head action was 10/10 in this one. Is this canon though? Is Jei gonna be looking for a new body again? Guess poor Hama didn't last very long.

Also the Sasuke-cameo was nice.

The one volume edition actually got reprinted a couple of years ago, but it seems the only place to get it now is Fantagraphics' site (Amazon only seems to have it from resellers going waaay over price). It's $75 and not a bad deal at all.

It's really good. It's huge and the paper quality's really nice. Definitely the best place to start since the Dark Horse books continue right after this leads off. I'm really glad I waited for it to come out instead of scouring eBay for years for the first printing (Which are still crazy expensive)

Okay. since I'm sure there are people here who know more about Japan than I do, I have a question - why do samurai have these cloth bindings around their waists? What purpose does that serve?

I'm completely serious. Cartoons get the same boring threads reposted over and over again, and not even many of those. While comics constantly have serious, in-depth discussions.
>>
>>94242894
They're called sarashi. They serve as mild armor (decently effective since Japanese sword technique doesn't emphasis thrusting) and if their midsection is injured, provide a sort of binding to the wound. If cut badly in the gut, a sarashi could save its owner's life by keeping his intestines from falling out.

You will also see them on depictions of delinquent school boys from the 1950s and '60s (bancho) and parodies/callbacks to them. The mild armor effect is more important when fists and sticks are the main weapons, and there's always the social effect ("Look at what a badass I am!").

You will also see them used as a brassiere by female characters, especially tomboyish ones.

I don't follow TNMT so I don't know about the episode.

>>
>>94246024

It's actually better than ever, anon. And it's a good time to start reading because new saga editions are coming out collecting several trades a piece.
>>
>>94246024
It's a bit confusing at first but what you probably saw was Usagi Yojimbo Saga Volume 1, where it starts at the beginning of the Dark Horse run where they began at #1 despite the continuity not getting rebooted. Check out the Wikipedia article, it gives a pretty detailed run down of how the books are collected. Simplest way to explain it is if you want to start reading from that then feel free, or if you want to read from the very beginning look for Usagi Yojimbo The Special Edition, which has everything before Dark Horse.
>>
Part of the reason why it's underappreciated is a lack of controversy or self promotion. Stan keeps to himself for the most part; he diligently works on his comic and not much else. For the comic itself, there's no bullshit. He doesn't use it to shock readers or as a way to preach some kind of political agenda. He's a storyteller that pursues themes that interest him but does it with thought and tact.

It doesn't get much promotion on sites like CBR because it doesn't tow a line either way. The comics outlets cant use UY for some kind of activist purpose. You can't get a clickbait article out of YU; it's too awesome for that.
>>
>>94246474

This is true.

It's a blessing and a curse. More of a blessing though.

I just wish DH could have gotten one huge promo going for the Saga editions. I mean, they should be in every comic store in Western Yurope, and they're not. That's such a shame.
>>
>>94246533
Poland here. We only get trades, not much later after they come out overseas. Good print, translations are fine too. But I still would suggest getting Saga or original trades instead. Why?

Lettering. Few can compare to Stan, and sadly it is a very overlooked art.
>>
>>94246829

Ah, I didn't know you got translations. We have no translations here (Netherlands), but all trades and saga editions are available through a big Dutch webshop.

Unfortunately, there is almost nothing in stores, no merch either. That's a real shame.

The lack of Keiko and Jei putting more planning than usual into this makes me think this was probably non-canon. Jei being blown to bits doesn't really matter much though since that happened in his first appearance and he was just fine in his next appearance. His first body was destroyed by Grasscutter and he was evicted from Inazuma by Sanshobo.

Though, if it is canon, it also suggests Kakera is part of Shoki's organization as well.
