what makes a good animated fight? I hear about how bad fights are "floaty". I didn't know what this meant at first, but I think it's about how certain fights don't look like they weight right? like the impacts look weak? anyway, I think also choreography, how the characters powers, style, and personalities play off each other, and situations make animated fights great. what makes animated fights work and not work? what are some of the best ones?

>what makes animated fights work and not work?

Look at Superman's window-shattering punch on Darkseid in the "Justice League Unlimited" finale - it had weight and consequence behind it, which made it a more memorable and affecting punch than a lot of the other punches thrown during the show's run. The fight between Darkseid and Superman also represents a clash of ideals, which makes their inevitable physical confrontation (the manifestation of their ideological conflict) more impactful; they are essentially two gods fighting to determine whether Earth will be spared or subjected to the Apokolips treatment.

A good fight will feel not only inevitable - the only means by which a certain conflict can be solved - but will feel as if it has all the weight of that conflict behind it. Superhero cartoons are great for that sort of thing. Things like choreography, a sense of place, and making the victory for whichever character wins feel earned are all important, too. But making people care about why the fight is even taking place and how it will resolve a conflict is the most important aspect of whether a fight scene works.

A good fight is structured like a story, with a beginning, middle and end with the action rising and falling like pic related. The fight also has to have weight and consequences for the characters, their relationships and the rest of the story.
