Emoji Movie comes out tomorrow. How bad is it gonna be?
>>
>>94200484
Its going to be one of the best movies in cinematic history
>>
Its pretty much Wreck it Ralph in story. Passable at best.
>>
meh.
>>
Wait what? Already? I just noticed the shilling like two weeks ago.
Jesus it's gonna bomb so fucking hard.
>>
I'm sorry we do this to kids these days. I know we were shilled to but it was never this bad, was it? A movie based on pictures replacing emoticons, several SEVERAL books on Minecraft, trying to create a narrative on a game that's literally just build shit in a sandbox
fucking funko pops where action figures used to be. do we really hate these kids that much
>>
>>94200484

I'm looking forward to the pounding it'll get from the critics.
>>
>>94200484
I don't know.
Maybe it pulls out a bittersweet ending, like the main character being some kind of Bootleg Skynet and in the end he takes over the world or some other bullshitty commentary about how being different can only cause trouble.
But being honest, this will be regular bad at best.
>>
Perhaps it will be ok or actually bad
>>
Comes out same time as Despicable Me 3.

This movie is DESIGNED TO FAIL.
>>
>>94200519
>Its going to be one of the best movies in cinematic history

This is my fear.

Hail mass marketing.
Hail corporate shilling.

Despicable Me 3 came out weeks ago and it has been destroyed properly.

I'll say it has a pretty empty week for it unless Dunkirk stops it on its tracks

there isn't an advanced screening for critics. That fact alone tells me enough.
>>

I still can only associate the main character's voice with pic related.

It will get large sales numbers from normies and people seeing it just out of morbid curiosity.

Predicting around 60-70% RT.

You're actually underaged and have never had a job before if you think that.

Doesn't matter the movie, saying "I worked at Sony Pictures Animation" gives you a lot of credit as an artist. It proves you were good enough to work at a top studio.
>>
>>94200484

"We should have a smiley face, but that's not enough, he's gotta have trendy, hip, feathered hair"
>>
>The “plot” is really an excuse to hop from one app to another; there are stops in the lands of Candy Crush, WeChat, Just Dance, Instagram, Spotify, and (for the kids!) Dropbox. That last one proves crucial, saving the fugitive trio from a pursuing robot. “Don’t worry, it can’t get in,” Jailbreak helpfully notes. “It’s illegal malware and this app is secure.” At the climax, a Twitter bird comes to the rescue.
>>
>>94202654
It only cost $50 million, so that's unlikely.
Every little bit counts though.
They will definitely sell off their movie division within the next decade
But it's weird because they released two recent movies I liked, Baby Driver and the nü Spider-Man. But it becomes clear why when you realize it's because for both movies their dumbass executives got out of the way and let other people do what they wanted.

It depends on how much money they sunk into this and how much the total will be globally/domestically.

>Production Budget: $50 million
Yeah, it might make back it's budget twice over. Plus, overseas will most likely watch this shit in droves. This is a terrible movie that will underperform but leave Sony limping by, enough so that they'll make another terrible movie.

It's not playing in China due to content. Only US and Europe releases so far. Absolutely no buzz according to theatre gossip as well. No one wants to show it but everyone is obligated to because Sony Pictures might get pissy. It will be lucky to break the top 5 first week even with the "So bad it's an awful trainwreck" quality.

the thing about foodfight is the whole premise was just an excuse to cram as much marketing into the movie as possible. it was ahead of its time in that respect.

>Foodfight! asked a question even more idiotic and offensive than the ones posed by Mac And Me, Delgo, and Oogieloves: Why can’t a movie be a feature-length advertisement for every brand? Forget limiting it to McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, like those small thinkers over at Mac And Me, or making a film a 90-minute ploy for those Oogieloves plush dolls the film-marketers forgot to actually produce. Foodfight! features appearances from the mascots of no fewer than 80 iconic brands, including Charlie Tuna, Mr. Clean, Mrs. Butterworth, and plenty of other beloved corporate stooges designed to create the illusion that there’s somehow a substantive difference between nearly identical brands (even if the only real difference is that one brand is generic and less expensive, while the other is represented by, say, a cartoon cheetah and consequently more expensive and by definition, better).

in that sense, the emoji movie really is walking the path laid down by foodfight, not just in the sense of being a terrible movie, but also taking product placement to its logical conclusion: no longer just part of a movie, but the very foundation of a movie.

There are thousands of books that you can read that will enrich your life, so why would anyone want to do this to themselves? Who thought there was a market for this? What sort of depraved mind did they find that agreed to actually write this?

Disney paid the critics.

It's too complex for most people to follow the deep metaphors present in Sony animation. First Angry Birds provided a compelling, nuanced look at immigration. Now this film tackles the division of labour in a real, heartfelt way, using popular corporate brands to emphasise how our labour has become alienated from us.

Most people will hate it because they're under the effects of false consciousness.

Sam's Club isn't a place for one time visits. It's made specifically for people who become regulars at stores, and tend to buy in bulk, because it rewards regulars with discounts and coupons, and there's a shit ton of bulk.

It's kind of like Costco. If you're genuinely the kind of person that likes a routine and shops at the same stores regularly, it's a godsend. Sam's Club and Costco sell in bulk sizes such as "Warehouse Pallet" and "Shipping Container". You can get stuff with per-unit pricing at 50-80% less than normal, just in massive quantities. So if you know you'll be buying the same stuff week after week when you go grocery shopping, it's perfect. Membership is what makes this stuff viable.

And I'm not sure how many other brands shoved in front of our face.

Again, it was a good movie, but it was also a literal toy commercial.

Well I'm an Eurofag, so I have no idea what Costco is either, but all right, this makes a bit more sense now, thanks guys. However, I still don't really see why would they require a membership to shop there at all. Like yeah, giving these really good prices for members makes sense, but why not let other folks buy there as well, just for more "regular" prices? What do they gain by not letting potential customers in?

>After seeing Madea Goes to Jail in a theater, where he saw how the audience members would shout out advice to the characters on screen, Viselman was partially inspired to create a children's film in the vein of Teletubbies with the interactive aspect, allowing the children to sing, dance, and respond to the characters on screen.[6] He felt that "The idea of interactivity isn't new, but the idea of interactivity in a theater is."[7]

Do people here not understand what paychecks are?
>>
>>94207907
The same thing any place with an entrance fee has to gain: money.

They get $40+ per member. The stores are already pretty full, so that's basically just free money. Plus there's the fact that people will forget to use their membership enough to justify it - more free money. Some people will automatically renew the membership and forget to go all year - even more free money.

How is this a hard concept?

Well, most Sam's Clubs are connected to Walmarts, since it's their sister location, so regular shopping typically happens there. Also, what >>94208066 said. In fact, I was told during my initiation that the combined profit from products sold only accounts for about 1% of the club's profits. A huge majority of it's profits come from those memberships.

Literally the closest they've even gotten to acknowledging animated movies is calling The Incredibles good or calling a Jake figurine from Adventure Time "a twinkie".

They'd rather make fun of Adam Sandler for an hour to please the fans but when asked to go watch something like Big Hero 6, their excuse is always, "We don't know much about animation, so we wouldn't enjoy doing it" even though it's written just like any other live-action Marvel film.

If you need to buy anything in bulk, it's a godsend. They also have a pretty decent selection of items that aren't in bulk you can get at a discount. The thing I like the most about Sam's Club is that they have a scan and go app where you can literally avoid the check-out line entirely just by scanning every item you put in your cart with your phone then having some sales associate scan a barcode on your phone at the exit.

Actually, they have what are essentially "guest memberships" which allow you to shop without paying for membership but all items have a 10% price increase. Keep in mind, membership only costs $40 for a full year so even if you only go there 5 times a year you'll probably save more money that way.

Wreck It Ralph actually had a story about something. Replace every character in that movie, and you still have a movie that was about something. Even if you knew none of those characters, their origins and motives were basically telegraphed to the audience for those who had no idea who they were.

Now look at this movie. It's a movie about nothing. A movie about nothing marketed to nobody whose target audience is no one. Kids wouldn't be caught dead watching something so shamelessly childish, and everyone with an IQ in the double digits would never actually buy a movie ticket to watch it unless they were drunk off their ass with their friends and needed to burn 90 minutes. Somehow, I doubt there's enough alcohol in the country to fuel the drunken revelry needed to keep this movie from flopping

Wreck it Ralph is a video game movie about a guy who's stereotyped as a bad guy, but still winds up being able to do good despite being typecast.

The Emoji Movie is a movie about a smiley face that wants to be a different smiley face. Sure, maybe it tries to have a bit of a meaningful message of "You don't have to be what people expect you to be" under the surface, but at the end of the day it's still a movie about a fucking smiley face.

The Lego Movie was a fucking masterclass of how to do a movie promoting a brand right.

We all knew going in that it's a big advertisement for the Lego toys. That's no shock. It's right there in the fucking title. But the story revolves around the messages that Lego wants associated with their brand: cooperation, creativity, having fun. And they built the story around that, which makes the reveal near the end all the more poignant. And that's even before we get into all the stuff they added as a way of thanking long-time fans of Lego, right down to how the animation style is in itself a nod to classic Lego stop-motion animation projects.

Meanwhile, the Emoji Movie is just Sony pissing on fifty million dollars and hoping people will pay to see it. How are our communication methods changing thanks to technology and things like emojis? How do people have fun with them? What do they mean to the people who use them? Those are the questions the Emoji Movie could've asked and answered. Instead they went with the generic "guy leans to be yourself and falls in love with a colorful girl and saves the world" stories that amounts to jack shit.

I hope every brainchild of this shit sandwich of a movie loses their fucking jobs.

There's also the fact that they toyed around with the Chosen One narrative and cast Liam and Morgan into roles they're typecast as, and messed with those, too. (Morgan Freeman goes off a few times and Liam also voices Good Cop)

And Batman was actually put in because the writers realized "Wait a minute, Lego and WB both have the Batman license". Originally Lucy was gonna hook up with Metalbeard.

Honestly, I bet the Lego Movie was the inspiration for the Emoji Movie, but none of the execs actually watched or understood what made the Lego Movie work.

"Well, shit", they thought, "People are raising hell over the Lego Movie getting an Oscar Snub, an emoji movie would be DYNAMITE!"

>>94214169
I think the ballpark you give on how much it'll make is too high. The reviews have been so rapid and scathing that it'll be well-known by everyone who owns a phone by Friday evening, which is terrible for Sony.

My thought: it'll make its money from China and from fuckers to go to see how bad it actually is. Sony, forever oblivious to the shit they're wading knee-deep in, will declare the movie a hit and start working on a sequel, a video game, an official app, and a television series on Cartoon Network, where it'll air exactly once and then never be seen again in favor of Teen Titans Go reruns.

Not topic-related (or I guess it is since we're talking about shitty movies based on brand recognition), but I just saw that movie today just out of morbid curiosity and to be honest the parts where they focused on the faces of the human characters were fucking hilarious. Of course the rest of the movie is boring, but it's funny to think that the animators were so burned out with this project that they did everything they could to make the faces as ridiculous as they could.

Even though, I remember one movie where Tom & Jerry went to Mars and the facial expressions on the humans were even more extreme and detailed, it was hilarious.

Harvey Beaks was put on Nicktoons. When that happened Greenblatt freaked the fuck out and derided and insulted the company on tumblr/social media, as well as tell everyone about the new Invader Zim movie that was supposed to be kept secret.

The funny part about that was no one believed him, until teasers for the special were reveled.

Can I be real for a second?

This board is fucking atrocious right now. You're all acting like a bunch of whiny, entitled little babies.

A tiny team of people made an animated adventure for you to embark on. They made it for YOU, and they're going to wake up tomorrow morning and see that instead of enjoying it, this community of "fans" picked out the 3 or 4 things that weren't perfect and are using that to fucking riot.

Guess what? The movie was never going to be perfect. It was never going to live up to your hype. It was never going to be everything you'd ever want in a movie.

What it WAS going to be was an impossibly epic adventure filled with action and funny shit. I just watched it for an hour and a half and it was exactly that. What more do you want?

Is it simple? Sure. Is it repetitive? Maybe. Is the product placement jarring and the jokes questionable and the structure unclear? Sure, fine.

But holy shit what do these people OWE YOU?

How fucking entitled do you have to be to have the appventure of a lifetime inside a smartphone and then say "yeah but…"

We should all be fucking weeping in our chairs right now at the sheer size and scale of the achievement. We should be showering the people behind this thing with the praise they deserve for pulling off one of the most inspiring movies in recent memory.

Sony Pictures doesn't owe you a good time. Yet they gave you 86 MINUTES worth.

If you have the fucking audacity to complain about it then you don't deserve it and you were never fans in the first place.

You are one. We are hundreds, thousands. Millions. You aren't just IN the minority; you ARE the minority.
I don't feel awkward or anxious watching the Emoji Movie unironically around others, and your words don't affect me. Many others, however, are coming out of their shells for the first time in their lives. This is the first time many are enjoying the beautiful movie that has been drafted and shot for us - and it IS beautiful. Incredibly so. DON'T ruin this for them. We Emoji Movie fans may have our differences, but we will not hesitate to come to the aid of our fellow kinosseurs, especially against someone who so virulently slurs that which has brought us all together.
Don't take this the wrong way. I don't hate you. I don't fear you. I pity you.
I'm sorry that you feel this way towards us. I'm sorry that The Emoji Movie is such a bane to your existence. And I'm sorry that you are missing out on such a wonderful experience. Mostly, though, I'm sorry that you feel the need to go around and publicly chastise and berate others. I'm sorry that, to ensure your own validity, you need to make others feel invalid. I'm sorry that your self-worth is so infinitesimally miniscule that you have to make others feel less-than-human, at least in your own denatured mind, just to feel whole. I am truly sorry that day-in and day-out you have to put up with your worthless, meaningless, Shakespearean tragedy of a life.
I ask you politely to cease your unnecessary cries for attention, and instead invite you to join our ranks. Uninstall The Dark Knight Rises, start up The Emoji Movie, and breathe in the splendour and the amazement of your first scene, and then, maybe, just maybe, you'll see what you've been so hopelessly searching for this whole time.

This movie, man.
I barely thought it would live up to the hype, let alone exceed it. I've been watching it for four hours straight across only two movie theaters and about five sound systems, and it has been absolutely and utterly humbling. My breath is being taken away at every turn.
I just laughed watching them desperately try to make their way out of the Candy Crush app, with ominous bots startling me from far across some rocky, eroded mountains against the backdrop of a massive dark blue system. Earlier I was marveling at a herd of grazing Emojis on a little yellow snapchat with a pink filter. Creatures were screeching in the distance and tinkling piano chords played in the background.
I very much appreciate the technical and leveling aspects such as CGI and voice acting, but most of all, this movie has been an extremely emotional experience for me so far. I could barely pull myself away from my first scene once I took a seat. No matter what I'm looking at, I have this excitement and this wonder and frustration that I am inevitably missing so much. I have never, EVER felt this lost. The Movie just beckons, wordlessly. What a beautiful, beautiful, titanic movie. I have no words.
Enjoy, everyone. And thank you, Sony and Tony Leondis. Jeez Louise.

Because when major corporations have the rights to a well-established property, their first thought is always "this was made years ago, how do I sell it to people TODAY?". And for Sony, that means gutting everything about it what was actually worthwhile, wearing the property in question as a hollow, gaudy costume, and parading it around with celebrities and tired pop culture references. It's literally that shit direction that made them lose the pony movie rights to Lionsgate, for the record.
