who is your favourite member of the Endless /co/?

Daniel, the only one who isn't shit.
>>
>>94183742
Killer Frost.
>>
>>94184049
I still don't quite get the motives of Death in the Endless. In fact, Death, Desire, Despair, and Delirium all rely on life to exist for their concepts to exist (I know there's an afterlife in the DCU but I don't know if the concepts have power in the realm of the dead -- in fact, how did Death claim dream, anyway?), but Life is not an Endless.

So, when Death eventually takes all the life in the realm of the living (which, by current DCU scientific standards, should happen eventually, albeit in a long time because the universe will eventually not sustain life and be either abandoned or extinct), wouldn't every Endless but Destiny "die" for lack of a better word? And Time and Night, who are their own classification.

Either Death or Time are, by their nature, destined to destroy half of the Endless because the concepts will cease to exist after heat death.
>>
>>94184595
The Neil Gaiman mini Book of Magic addresses exactly that. At the very end of the universe the last beings will be Destiny and Death. Destiny will close his book and meet his end and Death will lock away the universe.
>>
>>94184595
Yep. Death takes away all her brothers and sisters in the end. Destiny knows that it is the case.
>>
>>94184645
>>94184776
Cool shit; so does Death just retire, more or less? I don't know if beings in the DCU universe can die in the afterlife.
>>
>>94184876
We don't know what happens after that. That's, presumably, just the end of the story. Maybe another story will come along with some new players, but the end is the end. Everyone and everything played their part.

It's why Death is so generally amiable. There's a bit of nihilistic acceptance in the big things once she's accepted her job and why she seems to worry about tiny personal matters more, since those are the only things that matter when the big picture doesn't.
>>
>>94185095
Fair enough. I was just wondering because she leads souls to the afterlife as her job, but I don't know if she goes and annihilates souls as well, or if the afterlife in the DCU is independent of the physical universe.
>>
Unpopular opinion: I don't like any of them and I especially don't like some people's need for them to be THE biggest deal in DC's cosmos.

I love them but actually agree with you on this part. The Endless should always operate in the background, sub rosa, just around the corner and between the lines. I would hate to see them gradually become just another bunch of supers.
>>
>>94187416
Well I guess it makes sense if they don't have superuniversal characters like marvel (I don't know if they do). I know in marvel there are characters completely beyond tile and death.
>>
>>94185095

Death being so kind and compassionate seems to have been a recent (relatively) development for her. In the past that we see in Endless Nights: Heart of a Star, she is absolutely cold and terrifying.

This is one of my favorite Sandman stories honestly, it's so interesting to see the early times of the universe when the Endless were very involved in everything and also how much it ties into DC in general with Rao meeting with Despair and the Oans learning to use willpower to make green fire.

Apparently according to DCWiki stuff Death can claim whatever in the ordinary multiverse but has no power in the Sphere of Gods. There, the Black Racer can kill the New Gods, but there are certain realms (Heaven, according to the wiki) that outright lack Death because all the people there are either already dead or beyond Death's reach.
>>
>>94192811
>Apparently according to DCWiki stuff Death can claim whatever in the ordinary multiverse but has no power in the Sphere of Gods
Well that's bollocks, because Dream is from Sphere of Gods, and other endless are probably too, and she can take them.
>>
>>94193466
It's possible there just hasn't been something to sufficiently address it, then. It would make no sense for The Source to die, for example, since it's directly responsible for Death's creation, and Lucifer is a denizen of the SoG and is untouchable by Death.

In that very setup Destiny is beyond even the Monitor sphere and Death takes him in the end.

Dream is in the Sphere of the gods but that's just where he resides. The Endless are beyond even the monitors.
>>
Obviously Dream is the GOAT.
>>
Shouldn't there be pretty big overlaps between Death and Destruction, and between Dream, Desire, Despair and Delirium?

Thematically, they get pretty redundant.
>>
>>94185248
>Fair enough. I was just wondering because she leads souls to the afterlife as her jo
There is no afterlife. At least, afterlife itself would have died by the time it is time to go. She was born when the first living thing was created, and so she will disappear when the last living thing dies. Death will end when there is no more living things.

Technically Destruction should actually be older and more powerful than death. Destruction would have existed since the big bang, the very start of the universe, born alongside Destiny, to oversee atoms colliding, the first stars exploding, etc.

Then, at the end, Destruction and Death will be the last of the endless, Destiny has long closed his book as all living things are gone, and the laws of physics take over and the last stars go out. Destruction and Death are the final two lights in the cosmos, and they mutually end each other, bringing the cold darkness to it's final equilibrium.

There is a bit of a misnomer going on with some of them to keep with the D theme. "Destruction" can be more accurately referred to as "change". For something to begin, something must end, or when something changes, it is no longer the thing it once was. Death, on the other hand, is not change, it's the end. After death, there is no evolution or metamorphosis, only stillness, but destruction is the chaotic nature of life and progress.

Delirium is essentially embodying flights of fantasy, or nonsense, in another way of looking at it. Dream gets the things that "are not, never were, nor will ever be" but Delirium essentially gets the misc. category. Even Dream errs towards order and structure to things, whereas Delirium is the natural madness that permeates all life. The things that are, but don't seem to be, or can't be but do, etc.

Desire is literally just what everyone wants, in a literal sense. She's both the craving and the fulfillment of every, well, desire ever felt. Despair is the opposite, she's the dejection, the loss, the misery when things don't go right. Destruction and Despair can overlap, but more often Despair's domain is things that are "tainted" not destroyed. They can all crisscross with each other, which is why they tend to interact and aid or fight each other, but for the most part they all have their own unique domains.

Death and Destiny are not concepts inherent to living things. In the very first meeting of cosmic powers, with the Endless, the Gods, and the living souls of the Stars in attendance, Death says "You will all come to me". Death is the end of planets and stars, of matter and energy, of every conceivable form of existence. Destruction is the means by which it ends, but Death is the end.
>>
>>94194406
The Black Racer is for the new gods (Who are just biological but high-tech beings) and not all entities described as gods.

The Source and Presence are both considered limitless and beyond dying, and Lucifer is stated to only be capable of destruction from The Presence itself.

We can't ever know what happens after Death takes Destiny's book, because the story has ended. The story can't end if we are still reading what happens to Death after she takes Destiny's book.

The whole reason they say Death is the only entity that might potentially survive the end of existence is because no one knows what exactly will happen after existence ends except that Death will be the last being to close up shop.

Death might cease to be, might just stand there aware but without the ability to do anything, or she might just wake up in a new universe with new family and everything has just started again.

"Ah. There really is a desert. Does everyone get this?" said Brutha.
WHO KNOWS?
"And what is at the end of the desert?"
JUDGEMENT.
Brutha considered this.
"Which end?"
Death grinned and stepped aside.
What Brutha hat thought was a rock in the sand was a hunched figure, sitting clutching his knees. It looked paralyzed with fear.
He stared.
"Vorbis?" he said.
He looked at Death.
"But Vorbis died a hundred years ago!"
YES. HE HAD TO WALK IT ALL ALONE. ALL ALONE WITH HIMSELF. IF HE DARED.
"He's been here for a hundred years?"
POSSIBLY NOT. TIME IS DIFFERENT HERE. IT IS MORE ... PERSONAL.
"Ah. You mean a hundred years can pass like a few seconds?"
A HUNDRED YEARS CAN PASS LIKE INFINITY.
The black-on-black eyes stared imploringly at Brutha, who reached out automatically, without thinking ... an then he hesitated.
HE WAS A MURDERER, said Death. AND A CREATOR OF MURDERERS. A TORTURER. WITHOUT PASSION. CRUEL. CALLOUS. COMPASSIONLESS.
"Yes. I know. He's Vorbis," said Brutha. Vorbis changed people. Sometimes he changed them into dead people. But he always changed them. That was his triumph.
He sighed.
"But I'm me," he said.
Vorbis stood up, uncertainly, and followed Brutha across the desert.
Death watched them walk away.

In Lucifer, Lucifer says that death doesn't mind people that try to extend their lives or come back, because there will always be the last time.

Everybody lives the same amount of time for death: one life worth.

Death is the biggest death authority in the DC universe. The Racers are just another entities that do a similar job as death, but Death is the concept itself, she is what death is and she's the same for everybody in the end.
