I think it's also context within the slate of books being put out. When Jaime Blue Beetle got introduced, it was right after Ted's headshot and Jaime and his supporting cast were every bit as annoyingly overt as most minority pushes by Marvel today. It could've been expressed in Shield forcing them to stand down, or straight up being picked on by Z-list villain teams. Like Thunderbolts who aren't actually Masters of Evil. There could've been a good story of them proving themselves.

I was leery about Cho as Hulk, but his solo started out pretty decent and seems to be picking up again now that the very special Asian issues are over. He also had some of the only decent CW2 tie ins, surprisingly. Plus, it helps that he's a more organic legacy, since he's been a supporting Hulk character for years.

The profit from comics are in the movies. In the movies, they can remain more true to most of the characters to make fans of all types happy.
The comics have very little profit. They are an investment for advertisement for movies, or push a propaganda campaign. There's little point in pleasing fans for a negative return on funds spent.
