There's a fanfiction out there that explores a possible relationship between Arnold and Nadine, but it runs into the same thing I figure would happen between them: they have absolutely nothing in common except both being nice people.

The only thing that keeps them together in the story is the crushing loneliness they seem to suffer without companionship, and you can't build a relationship on that.

I wouldnt do it to begin with, because at best it would include Lila and Helga.

If you want to strench a little, include Rhonda or some other girl (not Ruth or Phoebe, this is stupid), but you would have to work on it first to be sure that everything is in character. Also, follow the tone of the show, which probably means that in the end nobody gets with Arnold and he didnt wanted it to begin with.

Arnold doesn't seem to have any crushing loneliness beyond missing his parents, the effects of which he doesn't project onto his romantic relationships.

Helga might seem to some extent be filling the void left by her cold and distant parents and lack of close contact with others aside from perhaps Phoebe with her obsessive love for Arnold, but generally when it isn't being played for laughs her love for him is portrayed as something very real, genuine and nuanced. It just happens to be that she is really a melodramatic and passionate person so her love for Arnold appears to be based less on rational love for him as a person but an overemotional nonsense. In actual fact she does make clear that she loves him due to his generosity and virtue at multiple points and that it isn't just some infantile crush.

That's exactly what I was thinking about though. Helga's loyalty to Arnold comes from him being the first person to show unconditional kindness to her in an otherwise lonely life where she had to grow up as the unfavored kid of the family. Him being Helga's idealized "only shining life in her sad life" is also the reason she was afraid to tell the truth, else he will outright reject her and crush that ray of hope.

I think that though that was the original source of it, her feelings for him are not purely rooted in that one act of charity. It undermines it far too much in my view, and damages her character fatally if you believe that.

Actually, in the story I mentioned the "kids" are in their late teens to early twenties. Phil and Gertie are gone, there's no Miles or Stella, and Helga never confessed so, yes, Arnold is truly lonely.

He tried a relationship with Rhonda first, but she tried to fix him by adapting him to her world. That failed miserably, of course, and when he drifted into Nadine's orbit she was even more isolated than he was. Their relationship, for far different reasons, also was doomed to fail.

The lesson is that even though two people might in fact make sense as a couple, if there's no spark between them all of their perceived compatibility is a waste.
