I like "for want of a nail" type AUs where one small detail is changed and it changes everything else. Like for example Shrek 4's premise, or the fan comic where Aang gets rescued out of the ice several years later than in the cartoon.

I'm not too into stories where the characters are turned into totally different people without any particular explanation. I especially dislike high-school AUs.

I think those are generally written by people who just want to write a story but think, correctly, that the only way to get people to read it is to disguise it as fanfic since that has a built in audience.

In fairness, sometimes I'll read one of those far out AU fics that doesn't even bear a relation to the source anymore but if the writing is good I'll keep reading because at that point I get invested in the authors story.

So I wouldn't be too surprised if at least a few authors did that one purpose.

I think AU's are alright, but I personally have a Gripe with swap AU's.

Not becuase it think that they're inherently bad, but because people always pay too much attention to the swap part instead of Alternate Universe part.

When people write Swap AU's they often fall into the pit fall of making the characters fall into the same role as the ones in the original universe and often end up molding and mangling their characters to so that they end up being the same as the ones whose roles they and took just retread old ground. The interesting part of a swap AU arises from the characters being different from each, and having different thought processes, making different decisions, and going through different character arcs. I'm not saying that every character should be the exact same as they are in the source material, especially if the AU involves changing fundamental parts of their backstory like their age or identity, but keep in mind that the change is supposed to arise from how things would go differently from source.

This is actually a really good example of that. I found an Antigravity story that was actually pretty compentently written and had some interesting ideas. The major flaw with was that whenever it tried to mirror the source it butchered the characters and didn't do anything new or interesting.

This is an example of a swap AU done well - it doesn't try too hard to make the characters fit in the plot and relationships of the old show and instead adapt the story and universe to the change and figuring out new and interesting ways to hit some of the same memorable landmark moments.

If you've got a story to tell, then just fucking tell it. A good story is its own justification. You shouldn't need to couch it in ultimately meaningless literary devices to justify its existence.

The approach was always slapping them into the other shoes, and leaving it at that.
Gideon should've been a fake Magician/stage kid who becomes enthralled with the oddities of GF, and eventually finds a place amongst the town. His character would eventually grow as he becomes a true Magician.

Pacifica could've been the local outcast who most can't stand because she's too happy, and neighbor/friend of Gideon, the new kid in town. She'd eventually resolve the issues with her family, and begin to make friends.

Dipper should've been a distant know it all who gathers the magical items for the Mystery Shack via cruel means. He'd stay in the shadows, and would be at odds with most people he encounters.

Mabel should've been the town favorite, the perfect good two shoes who becomes way too obsessed with Gideon. Basically Canon Gideon but as a girl and a flock of men and girls who wish to be her friends.

I think they're mostly silly and I don't really see the point of making a bunch of fanart and fanfiction about them. I've had a lot of laughs talking about how you could change Berserk into a high school drama anime with one of my friends before, but going so far as to make art and stories about the idea takes it too far imo.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using pre-existing characters as a median for inspiration, just as long as it has enough of its own things going on to differentiate it from the source material. That's obviously not the easiest thing to do, or even possible in some cases.

But there's not many things you can create nowadays that someone else can't say "it's been done" about, so taking it a step further with an existing IP isn't unforgivable in my opinion. Plus, someone else could end up tapping into some great potential that the original creator never even considered; fanart/fiction provides a new perspective on a story that expands the sometimes limited perspective of the creator.
