After some thought, I feel like the issue is that the first three episodes were fresh, exciting, and new, while towards the middle they leaned back into the episodic format of the original series.
The problem is that they introduced character arcs and buildup, but the episodic nature isn't conducive to clearing up guilt and cult brainwashing in the manner most people would like. If they'd kept the entire season similar to the first episodes OR continued it in the same tone and style as the first four seasons complete with upbeat Jack, it would have been perfect. Either that, or made the season like 15-20 episodes so the characters evolved and they had more time to build up Jack and Ashi's romance. Frankly it's surprising Adult Swim only ordered ten episodes in the first place.
