Candy was another character that was wasted by Alex and his inability to write compelling or likable girl characters. In the first episode she's in, she's a quirky yet sympathetic girl who has the ability to be the nerdy friend. Alex, whoever, doesn't like those type of characters because they're "too generic", so instead he just makes her in later appearances into a generic Mabel clone who is boy crazy and doesn't really do anything. People tried shipping her and Dipper together anyway simply because they looked cute together so Alex wasted an entire episode devoted to him autistically screeching "DONT DO THAT HEY DONT DO THAT" at them. In the end, she was a character with more screentime than Wendy or Pacifica but we knew even less about.

Dude, you're seriously missing out. My standards for cartoons are high as fuck now (comes with watching Canadian garbage) and GF is seriously the best one I've ever seen, even slightly better than Avatar.

Depends on the kind of character you want

A side character that can guarantee some laughs whenever they're included? Mabel is pretty great for that.

The show only three main characters: Dipper, Stan, and Ford. Mabel was written like a side-character but pushed front and center like a main one.

What made her charming as the "fun character" made her unbearable when she's suddenly given as much agency as Dipper, but with none of the personality to use it.

That's not really true, for example from Japanese fan art you'd think he's a main character, and they're not ALL fujoshits. More like Bill is popular as a meme everywhere outside of 4chan.

Meanwhile 4chan is the only place that seems really nuts over Pacifica (mostly because "huge tits fan art lol"), this place doesn't really represent fans overall, but just a small group of fans.

For example if you're talking about normal people and casual watchers I'm sure Mabel is the most popular character by a mile and most don't even remember any of these other characters' names.
