She's a childlike(or I guess humanoid) creature called a "moonflower". Her duty is to protect the moon which she lives in from a mysterious dark force called the "Big Bad".

basically there is a giant evil force milling around the galaxy that basically eats all life on the moons that litter the galaxy, moonflowers are created to defend their own specific moon from this darkness (you find out in the first 10 mins they're really shit at it)
and Hanazuki is the latestes in what is probably hundreds of thousands of moonflowers through out the galaxy
and it follows her as she learns just how to stop the darkness from eating her moon with these emotion trees
then there are some other moon flowers who appear later on but I won't spoil

basically it's not a ground breaking show, but still a great watch, go in with an open mind
and all the eps are on youtube so go ahead

but Kiazuki is the best moonflower, don't let anyone tell you any different

Part of me does hope we get more characters in S2, specifically more Moonflowers, but I also worry about character bloat. It's nice being intimate with a select few rather than just familiar than a wide variety. The hamkas, flochies etc. provide the colorful variety for plushes and whatnot, but the Moonflowers are what the viewers invests themselves in. Not that it'd be bad to have more characters, it'd just need to be handled carefully to avoid become horses but with flower children.

I imagine since they'll probably spend a good chunk of S2 looking for Kiazuki's other critters, they'll HAVE to come across at least one other Moonflower-inhabited moon at some point.

Just caught up on the last 5 episodes of Season 1.

Fucking amazing! All the characters interacted in interesting ways, and that Hemka form was rad.

I like that. Makes them "special" without them actually solving anything. They're just as clueless as the sprouts as to what's going on with the Big Bad and Little Dreamer, they just know that their emotions tend to drive the Big Bad away when that melon headed kid decides to drop by with a treasure and they activate it.

On that note, I wonder, does there come a point when a moon doesn't need more trees? Does the Big Bad just hold a grudge and relentlessly keep trying until the moon is overtaken? Kinda like Ever Oasis's Chaos- you drive this evil force away from your settlement several times, but it just comes back harder because it's pissed at you even more than last time.
