Exactly, all the classes were about animal behavior and career day saw everyone ecstatic that they were going to grow up to be a zoo animal. That's why Adam was the outcast there. He didn't need to learn about animal behavior in order to become a zoo animal.

I think it one point some of the characters even bring this up, before just completely disregarding it because they start to realize that there are a lot of holes best left ignored
