When I was a child, I hated shoes with a passion. I would test my resolve by walking barefoot down a gravel driveway for 50 yards. With each step, the sharp hardness of the stones bored into my increasingly toughening feet. I pictured myself as a kind of ascetic monk, substituting stones for flagellation. My mother pictured me as a troubled child.
