Beyond being OK, he was fresh, and exciting during a time when Marvel, especially the X-Books, had stagnated.
I am old as fuck and I was legit excited by his first issues of New Mutants. I own a copy of # 98 even.
All the image guys brought that to the table. Even Rob innovated with layout and paneling.
He sold more comics for marvel than all the guys. working there now combined.

I got no problem with people hating on liefield, but it seems most of them don't come by it honestly, they haven't read anything or looked at anything beyond the same old same old pics that get posted year after year.

I don't know a source on the embezzling, but the Image documentary says different reasons.

1. He set up his own comics company called Maximum that was publishing outside of Image and refused to move those comics to the Image banner
2. He was caught trying to poach talent from Marc Silvestri's Top Cow studio which made Marc leave Image and he came back once Liefeld was gone

Liefeld deserves to be in the Hall of fame of comics, if something like that exists, for creating Cable, Deadpool (even if he was a rip off) and Domino, and being so imitated. I guess to same degree he was a good designer.
