The primal cause as to why Ken Penders was able to stall lawsuit with Archie was due to the fact that after contracts were destroyed along with the storage facility Archie didn't bother to force their employees to sign new ones. You can have a game with only one character because you control it and that's where the fun comes from. In a drawn/written story like a comic, with some experimental exceptions, you need characters for the protagonist to interact with or it becomes boring and dull.

Chaotix happened because they served a very specific, and kind of shitty purpose of letting them reuse level assets in an already heavily retreaded game.
