The question, despite Annie's breakdown rant here, is really why Tony married Surma. As far as I can tell, we don't have a single time they spoke to each other in the comic yet. The closest we get is Tony crying at her bedside while she tries to comfort him smiling. Frankly, it's more like Surma did something to Tony to turn him into a total oneitis sufferer. She has a record, after all.

I can sort of see the clues. Tony is clearly a romantic, despite other indications. His confusion over how to deal with Brinnie points to him being the kind of person uncomfortable with casual relationships and who treats intimacy with a particular kind of care. Because he tends to go all in. This being context provided by how deeply in love he appears to have been with Surma later. It also matches up with his weird double life as a Jones cosplayer and a guy who freaks out in front of his friends about dates.

The real question is what Surma did to instill this love in him, such that it blew past all his concerns and snagged him real deep. He was always primed for it, most likely, but it probably would've taken something specific for Tony to let her in like that, especially romantically. He seems comfortable with Donny, and now with Kat, but I have to imagine you'd need to do something pretty special to get him to fall in love. After that, of course, he's in it forever, but the question of that initial thing remains. Sort of makes me question how Donny and he met too, really.

I feel like part of this is because Eglamore is a bad influence on Annie. I wonder why more readers take for granted the fact that he's pretty bitter and jaded over the whole Surma thing. Sometimes it seems like only Donny and Anja were okay with Tony and Surma hooking up.

I think it is more of Annie being broken shining through, Eglamore isn't the only one who been shitting on her dad and she doesn't respect Eglamore THAT much, he was just one of MANY Tony naysingers, and one she didn't exactly hold in high regard either.

I think the issue Annie is having is that now it seems like her father isn't the social retard she thought he was which means that any problems in their relationship is because of Annie. It seems she was fine with their strained relationship because she thought that was the most he could do but know that her best friend enjoys his company she's worried that perhaps her father really hates her. It may all be fueled by autism, but it's inescapable that Tony's been a fucking terrible father. Especially after Surma died, it's inexcusable that he'd have no communication with Antimony at all until, essentially, he needed something from her, and then just dropping back into her life and ruining her world without even trying to soften it.

He may have good reasons for all he's done, but he's been dogshit about showing Annie any affection or tenderness, which is what she needs because he's her ONLY LIVING RELATIVE. Jesus Christ. Annie can be a bit shitty, but she's only a teenager, while Tony is a grown-ass man who should have taken more responsibility than he has.

Something about that has always stuck out for me. It was in the comic where Coyote's telling her just what she is, and how her fire elemental heritage has led the women in her family to give birth to a child, give all their life force to that child, and die. And Coyote says: "The same then will happen when you have a child."

But what's always stuck out for me was Tom's note on that comic. The note simply sald:

And it's always made me wonder if Annie even wants to have a child. And, if her heritage COMPELS her to have a child, it's always made wonder if she'd go to extreme measures to undo that nature, to outwit it or work around it.
