I know the show's all about balance, but Air was always treated as the "special" one. Right down to the color theme, the other three Elements are red, green, and blue, whereas Air is yellow. Air is like the detached, unbiased leader of the rest of the elements.

Does Air need to bend something other than air? And why would something anyone can participate in give them unique powers. I mean anyone can potentially enter the spirit world if they're spiritual enough so i don't see why projecting your spirit into the material plane would be an airbender only move. Honestly when it comes to airbending it just seems to be that they highly value detachment and freedom because of their element, but you could have a materialistic airbender if he wanted to be. Actually Kai might fit that description atleast to start with.

Same goes for the spirit bending waterbenders can do. It would make more sense if every element had their own way to interact with spirits through bending, than for it to be water exclusive.

As for the colours, i think it just fits with their elements. And Air nomad are heavily inspired by tiban monks who wear the same kind og clothing as Aang and Tenzin.

>At the Crossroads of Destiny, Katara sees Azula preparing to zap Aang. Desperate, she flings a shield of water across the room--but this only results in a transference of the electrocution from Aang to Katara. (Mineral-rich cave water? Spiritual interference? Handwave it however you wish.) Aang, still in the detached Avatar State, kills nearly all the Dai Li agents and deals severe injuries to Azula and to Zuko. As the Avatar State fades, Aang is overcome with horror at the destruction he's wrought, and (since he lacks memory of his Avatar-State actions) assumes that he's the one who killed Katara; however, Iroh arrives on the scene and says that it was Azula who did it. Aang is caught in a dilemma--kill the incapacitated Azula in a sorrowful rage, or maintain his principles?--but dozens more Dai Li agents are arriving, and Iroh exhorts Aang to escape up the waterfall, since Aang can't get back into the Avatar State and defend himself with his current feelings. Aang escapes, carrying Katara's corpse, and the Gaang leaves on Appa's back. The Dai Li take Iroh and Zuko back into custody, and send Azula to the royal physician's offices.

Sounds like a good explanation and i can see what you mean as it does feel like they guide the lava rather than control it outright. But i still have to say that this is also a fan theory while the show never goes into any amount of detail about how it works.
