I find it's not that simple in reality. There's basically two levels of SJW and Manta being a mastermind rather than a thug stretches far enough for some. They just want important minorities rather than suggesting perfection.

I know it might sound ridiculous but I'm making my own fan comic that details a proper origin for him by combining his multiple origins into a cohesive story (if I get far enough to put it out anyway). I always felt like Manta's origin has a lot of untapped potential, it's just that no one has ever tried fleshing it out with great care. I chose Bancroft as his surname for silly reasons.

It's a good thing they castes a Hawaiian guy as Aquaman, the media wouldn't be able to handle the nemesis of an aryan god being a black man.

Because he's a simple villain. He's not like the Joker who has "le wacky pEn6(_)N o5 D00M" tier theatrics that have gotten boring and stale and he doesn't have a cheap tragic backstory.
