I think Yardley knows Ian so he can send it to him. But I think at the very least we should make something to print and mail to one of them. It was Ian and Tracey who started what we fell in love with, and since they are also the ones that ended it in a way, it seems appropriate.

I'm sad because I loved these comics as a kid, but I honestly hadn't been interested in them in years. Even before the reboot the Mecha Sally plot was just dragging on way too long, and then right as they were about to go into the Ixis Masterworks stuff I was actually interested in the reboot came and stripped away a lot of the worldbuilding. I know it also got rid of a lot of clusterfuck left over from the comic's dark ages, but in the process a lot of stuff I was attached to from childhood was gone too.

To Ian's credit, he was doing a good job building up the reboot's new world (and Unleashed was a smart way to do it). But the problem was it was mostly JUST worldbuilding without much of a story beyond a loose Unleashed adaptation.
I liked the Naugus stuff though.


Mostly I just missed Finitevus.

So anyway, sad to see it go for the memories, but my interest in it these last few years hadn't been what it was anyway.

I hope not, I thought that would have been great as a kid, but now I realize that if I want the games, I could just play the games, and it's more fun to see an alternate take on the character.

And I kind of expect something to set it apart from other incarnations of Sonic, every single incarnation of Sonic has been completely different in not-so-subtle ways from the source material, and I'm starting to appreciate that a lot more.

It's a lot like the TMNT, or any comic book franchise really.

The only bummer is that there never has been, and likely never will be, a giant crossover with the other versions of the series, unless you count a few winks and nods to the OVA and Sonic Underground in the pre-reboot archie series.

This doesn't surprise me. When I revisited issues as a teenager that I enjoyed as a kid, I realised how many plot elements/visual cues were references/ripoffs of other content. When you're a kid, you don't immediately realise that the cliffhanger ending of Sonic 48 is a ripoff of a movie literally called The Fugitive, but essentially, the entire series has always just been a pastiche of other ideas, just reskinned to fit into the Sonic Universe.

I don't think that's bad – there's huge weight to the idea that great artists steal, and if you know how to steal without being blatant, more power to you.

I think the major issue that came with the Pendering was that it brought SEGA's attention to the comic. Far as I can tell, they didn't pay much mind--like, at ALL--to the comic before Penders went lawsuit slap happy. But as soon as that happened, someone at SEGA probably sat down and actually LOOKED at the comics and based on the rules they laid down afterwards, I get the feeling that they didn't like a lick of the comic and mostly just wanted it gone. Don't mistake me, Archie is digging itself into the ground financially, but the Pendering did the worst possible thing by drawing SEGA's attention to it.

It's a real pity, too, because Archie Sonic really gave a lot of characters an identity when they previously had no feasible one. Bean and Bark were roster fillers on a mediocre fighting game, Nack disappeared after two or three games without any logical reasoning, I think Ray appeared once and NEVER again, and Mighty may be THE most underused of the Chaotix. If the comics hadn't introduced roles for the first three, I seriously doubt anyone but the most die hard autists would care about the Hooligans, and Ray was basically a footnote on the game's history that would've suffered the same.

Say what you will about them putting in shitty fanfiction characters, Archie Sonic also gave a lot of identity to characters who would have no following or presence whatsoever otherwise.
