I read that fanfic story too. I thought the GoT references were pretty weird, because like why pit something of that tone with Adventure Time dude. but if you can get past that the story was pretty well written and I liked the concept a lot, Finn getting tortured and kind of mind broken and the rest of the cast having to deal with it.

His other story with Finn and PB is much better though. more like a more serious version of the show and the characters and relationships are all perfect, and no weird GoT shit shoved in.

It wouldn't make sense if they were only close for a very short amount of time. Their relationship carries too much meaning to the both of them. PB keeping Marceline's rock shirt, and its 'sentimental freshness' being a good example. If they were only friends for a short time, a gajillion years ago, why would she care so much? There's also all the past events that get referenced, and the way that the two interact indicate a level of mutual understanding that doesn't exist for them with other characters. Marceline's numerous pet names, PB feeling free to act like a snarky bitch etc etc.

I don't think it matters if their relationship is romantic or platonic, because it doesn't affect the story at all. If you like the ship, good for you, but if not you can easily look past the potential romantic implications. It would be interesting to see the writers tackle what specifically being in a romantic relationship means for their characters, but they'll (probably) never explore that.
