Does anyone on here like this? Pic related is the biggest offender, but I always felt it hurt the film rather the helps it because it dates it drastically if the music falls out of fashion, and is replaced by more generic pop music.
>mfw the only movie I like this in is Shrek because it actually works with the story

It depends on the music used honestly and if the movie itsself is relying on the music or not (Look at Trolls for instance).

I like to compare Home to Trolls.
Both had noted singers in their voice cast but Home just used a bunch of their songs as background music as a matter of fact while Trolls was actually about singing.

Dreamworks is a music licensing company, so it makes sense. They have the capabilities to do their own music (prince of egypt, Htyd) but they go for the easier, time saving, profitable approach to music.
For the longest time as a kid, I thought 1960s style scatman jazz and hippie fashion were actually popular things in turn of the 19th century France, because of the movie The Aristocats using contemporary music of its time.
I mean I don't like shitty modern pop music in my animated features either, because I just don't much care for that sort of music, but I still can't help but wonder how many people watching the movies decades from now will even really notice or care.

Sing did it right. It was a genuine celebration of music and performance, not an afterthought.

If we're going to be talking about Dreamworks' soundtracks, I kinda liked Megamind's use of dad rock.

That was excellent use of pop music.
