I'm surprised in retrospect over the decades they DIDN'T make Captain Marvel a part of the Superman family to provide a "kid" perspective, be bros with Jimmy and an even more direct "little boy audience surrogate" deal, etc. Maybe Supergirl was enough for the Superman family at the time in terms of actual costumed heroes.

Because DC's policy towards the the Marvels post-Power of Shazam has been to bury them in the toybox of unused characters. Doom Patrol gets more play than they do.

The Marvels work so good as part of the Superman mythos. Clark and Lois are journalists and so is Billy. They'll provide Jon with friends other than alien girl and Damian that can understand what its like to keep a secret identity. They provide a magic side to Superman's world that's largely only used magic to fuck over Superman when the plot calls for it.

And having them all working and playing on the Kent farm as a family is too adorable not to make happen.

Silver Age Superman's mythos was HUGE compared to Batman's or any other hero's back in the day. It's why he was America's number one superhero for the longest time. You had Kandor and Rokyn and the Legion's Future and Superboy's adventures throughout time and on and on and on. His mythos was so huge Lois and Jimmy got their own books.

At one time there was Superman, Action Comics, Superboy, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and Adventure Comics which became Legion of Superheros.

Batman had Batman, Detective Comics, and shared World's Finest with Superman.

Spectre was just an example. Any character with a high power level would do. It doesn't even need to be a magic character, although it would be nice to see Superman deal with magic beyond "oh no my other weakness." He's supposed to be a symbol of endless life and vitality and having his relationship to magic be the same relationship a snail has to salt is really kind of sad. Magic in DC is supposed to be a force that unites everything from the highest of things to the lowest of things. It's life, and having it just be an adversary to the champion of life is lame.

Kon as the aloof, slightly troubled older brother with clone angst. Chris as the passive and skittish baby brother. Jon as the more outgoing brother. Chris and Jon would have a Lucas and Klaus from Mother 3 relationship. Supergirl is their older sister who has her own angst like Kon except instead of worrying about being a clone she worries about fitting in on Earth. She bonds with older sister Peej who like Kara has memories of a lost and forgotten world.

Peej also doubles as Clark and Lois' babysitter for Chris and Jon when Kara and Kon can't cover.
