A story with stakes and consequences if they fail, characters that you want to see succeed, dialogue that doesn't make you want to rip your ears off, an interesting setting that feels lived in and believable, and good animation.
It was a perfect storm for people to like it. I don't think it's without flaws, considering every time I re-watch it I skip 40-60% of the episodes from the first season, but it's still good.
