Who's your favorite superhero, and how did you choose a favorite? It it their powerset? Their personality and beliefs? The quality of their series? I don't have a "favorite" hero, but I'm trying to come up with one.
>>
>>93969968
Red hood. I learned about him from some people who were talking about him which got me interested enough in him to google him, learn more about him and then I decided to read his books which made him my favorite.

So, I guess it mix of my liking his personality and the role he plays.

Static is my favorite superhero. How I pick my favorites is their personality first and than their powers.
>>

Changed as I grew up. Batman was the first, it was my first comic by dad got me. Then it moved to Gambit due to him being a stereotype from my home state. Liked Kyle because he was an artist who made money at his job, not a hobbyist - shared that with him.

Now that I am an adult I do not have a favorite character but I will always read JSA or anything related and X-Men. If I was forced I would have to go with Hulk.
>>
>>93969968
Probably Jack Knight Starman. First came across him as a kid browsing the DC wiki and the design really stuck with me, later in life I read the series and it was really good and involved the elements of superhero comics I was most interested in, and as time goes on I find him more and more relateble.
>>
Batman for me. As a child I watched reruns of the Adam west show with my dad. I also had an amazing experience seeing a batman themed water show at an amusement park and got to meet batman afterwards. So it's really a nostalgic thing for me.

Spider-Man
First super hero that I ever got into
I always made sure to prioritize his books above all others, but that all changed after One More Day
Fuck you Joe Quesada
Fuck you Axel Alonso

Top Five:
Jack Knight
Kevin Matchstick
Madman
Nexus
Badger

Basically boils down to how much I like their comics and how little they've been ruined by other creators.

As a kid it was:
Spider-Man
Batman
Gatchaman
Captain America
Superman
>>
Superman.
I loved his powerset as a kid. As I grew up I appreciated his character and his beliefs more.
>>
Dick Grayson is my favorite /co/ character.
I liked that he was everyone's friend. He's this character that you can take and throw onto nearly any team book and he naturally fits 90% of the time

Spider-Man
The Thing

I love the ASM and FF of the 60's- and Spider-Man has has good runs throughout until the 90's.
Shang Chi is a close third, MoKF is a GREAT comic.

I'm not sure he counts as a traditional superhero, but I'd say Hellboy. I enjoy his "why do I have to put up with this shit?" personality, and his struggle to move past the hand he was dealt resonates with me.

If I had to choose an actual factual superhero, I'd say Captain Marvel (Billy Batson). I like that he's just a young kid trying to do the best that he can.

Strangely Superman. I almost thought he was a lame hero that was nothing more than a boy scout. This was the period when I really enjoyed edgy/dark heroes.

YEars later a /co/mrade here posted Joe Casey's run on Adventures of Superman and I was floored by those issues (612-623) simply for the fact that Superman was a pacifist all throughout. In this series went up against otherworldly threats all throwing a single punch and he until the job was done. Something about that really connected with me and ever since he's been my number one hero hands down. I wanna be the kind of person Superman wants me to be.

Unironically Aquaman.
I like him when he's not taken to serious to an edgy extent. I'd say his best non-comic appearance is in Brave and the Bold. I just like the idea of a swashbuckling adventure hero who also has to deal with ruling a kingdom at the same time. That is also mixed with he fact that I've always liked Lovecraft stuff, which being underwater causes some Eldritch stuff to pop up occasionally as well medieval stuff which you see with the whole kingdom stuff. It's like a great mix of the 3 things I like.

Probably 2nd is Superman
3rd is Deadpool

>>
Aquaman. I always saw him as the guy who people underestimate, someone as capable as everyone else but doesn't care about looking capable, so he's underestimated and unappreciated.

Also the fact that no one who reads comics dislikes him, so he's the easiest way to tell the difference between the two groups.
>>
I don't have one. I haven't read comics enough to bond with any characters. I like superheroes but I don't KNOW any of them. Id prefer to be my own superhero if I was offered the chance.

Its kinda sad. If I had to pick I would say Spiderman. I had fond memories of the Spiderman 90s tv show with Madam Web and all those crossovers. I guess it would be him. But honeslty I feel like I missed out. Spiderman is black. Bendis rules with an iron fist. I missed comics everyone. Went right by me. I missed a lot of games too but I was autistic and isolated by my emotionally manipulative mom until my Dad let me live with him. So yeah. I don't have the money to buy anything and I know not where to look for scans. So I don't really have a chance to PICK a hero. I am stuck with Spiderman and Bats. And I do like them but I will never really know what they were like in their prime.

There is nothing wrong with having Spider-Man as your favorite hero. If anyone has the right to give up heroism for the rest of their life it would be Spider-Man. He is a hero that tries his hardest to do the right thing even when it seems like the world is stacked against him. He will throw himself into the meat grinder over and over again because if he doesn't do it, no one will. As he always says, with great powers comes great responsibility.
>>
>>93973167
Ironically from what I've read this reputation of him as useless, which I think started in the 80s, boosted his comic sales.
>>
>>93973168

Nightwing. Go into comics because of my uncle, read enough about the character to like him a lot. Supermans morals, batmans determination without any of the darkness. The debonair of zorro. Batman and Captain America

I like martial arts as a power set, and I like both respective stories and what they represent about the strength of mankind. Batman is a realist and sees the world for its flaws and manages to confront them without being a sunshine and rainbows type. I also like detective stuff and using your mind to overcome challenges.

Unlike Superman, Captain America has known what it is like to be truly vulnerable. He faces much more danger on a daily basis yet still goes headfirst into battle. He always tries to lift others up even though he sometimes doubts himself.

I see Cap and Batman as two sides of the same coin really. Both want to show that mankind is still good and can compete, but reflect it differently in their temperaments.

Batman, because I have the same personality type and flaws as him - possibly stemming from a deeply traumatic childhood experience. I also use my intellect and stoic vigilance as a shield and coping mechanism to subconsciously alienate myself from others under the guise of presenting myself as rational, responsible and prepared. Well, that's what my therapist told me. I am not a good person.

"If Clark wanted to, he could use his superspeed and squish me into the cement. But I know how he thinks. Even more than the Kryptonite, he's got one big weakness. Deep down, Clark's essentially a good person... and deep down, I'm not. "

Doctor Fate.

I always liked him from the sidelines where he usually appeared in TV Shows, then I read some good stories for him (DeMatteis) and my suspicion about how awesome he is was correct. I love him and the stories about him -if handled properly- can be glorious.

I really enjoy the powerset because of the over-the-top shit it can cause. The personality is a weird issue. I like many versions of Fate -not all-. But all of them are FATE too. And this brings a beauty to the table. Different people, with different attitudes, even more than one at a time in some stories, can go beyond their individualities to hammer down whatever challenge the universe throws at them with the absolutest power there is -or really high up there at least, seriously, my boy Fate is deliciously op-.

If I had to choose one aspect, I'd say the great stories. The story with Andrew Benett, the vampire, especially.
You see, I'm literally a materialist, a moral nihilist, a determinist -sorta, quantum mechanics is an issue-, atheist, as rational-logic focused as they come, with a hard-on for technology and all.
And here is a story, about reincarnation, the afterlife, spirituality, the creation of the universe by a loving creator (seriously, the idea of creator appearing as a smile and not as a guiding hand was brilliant) and all that.
And I loved it. I loved every freaking page of it.

When someone that in theory wouldn't be recommended for me wins me over, it's always a great feeling. I always have great respect for such works.

Any other Fatebros here? What are your favourite fatestories?

She-Hulk. I first learned about her through the 90s Hulk cartoon and got attached to her via the comics. Also doesn't hurt that we're both involved in Law. The reason I liked her was that she was laid back and had an opportunistic view on life and kind of accepted what she was.

I know your kind. You aren't a hero, you're a willing pawn of human greed. You serve masters that serve corporations that serve themselves, and people thank you for it.

Is that why you do it? To be loved? Or do you do it because the world left you no choice? Perhaps you do it because you genuinely believe you're doing the right thing.

But I think you know that isn't true. I think you know exactly who you are and how you got here. I don't need to open you up and pick you apart because you do that yourself every time you allow yourself to close your eyes.

I don't say this to make you ashamed or afraid. I say it because I want to help you. I want to free you. Please, PLEASE listen when I say these words, and think about what they mean:

Aquaman. What I like about him is that he doesn't necessarily want to be a superhero. He just wants to help people. To me, that is very relatable, and it helps me connect to him. Out of all of my favorite characters, Aquaman is easily the one that can keep me entertained for the longest amount of time. Though I like Wally West and Daredevil, I feel like their stories don't have the variety and potential that Aquaman's stories do, not that I don't love them. Whether he is in control of Atlantis or not, his stories are still great.

His runs have also been fantastic for the past few years but maybe with the exception of DCYou. Johns killed it with Aquaman and I like where Abnett is taking the run.

>Who's your favorite superhero
Well written versions of Superman. Emphasis on "well written." He's very easy to screw up.
>and how did you choose a favorite? It it their powerset? Their personality and beliefs?
A combination of power set (Superman's powers are just cool, don't even try to deny it... though I prefer more conservatively-powered versions of him) and his personality. I like when Superman is essentially just a kind-hearted young man from Kansas raised by loving parents who just happens to be able to bench press a navy destroyer. A major part of this is the fact that there is no dual identity for him; Superman IS Clark Kent. That's his name and that's who he is. He's at his best when he's not a larger than life paragon, but rather a guy who doubts himself sometimes and doesn't always know the best thing to do, but in the end always decides to do the right thing to the best of his ability because that's who he is- even if he has to make a hard choice in the process. And not because he has a tragic backstory or feels compelled to act by guilt, but because he just thinks it's the right thing to do and wants to help people. You get the impression that he'd still be an exemplary human being even if he didn't have superpowers.

I also like the themes that usually come associated with his stories, like how a normal guy handles the power of a god and how he handles his identity as both an alien and a proud Earthling raised by humans he considers fully his parents. Also his rogues are great. Lex Luthor, Brainiac, Darkseid, Zod, and Mister Mxyzptlk are all top-quality foes. Mongul, Metallo, and Bizarro are alright.

I guess you can't say your favorite superhero is the X-Men so I guess Cyclops. I think the mutant dynamic is the best story in the Marvel universe and it's still something that Fox has yet to fully explore, even in Logan. Cyclops embodies that dynamic really well. He still dances between integration and preservation. For a long time he was just a kid thrust into the forefront of the mutant community, a child forced to be a leader. Then once he was an adult he realized it was all for naught. It's one of the only lasting character arcs in the Big 2 that had a significant core personality change to a major character.

Interesting that you made this attempt after being specifically cautioned against such actions. It leads me to believe that you are not in fact concerned with insulting me or altering my mental state. Rather, you simply desire to show off. To look cool in the eyes of peers. Well? Did it work? Has your frail ego gotten its necessary boost?

Tell me, who is more pathetic: an arrogant and rude man who posts verbose replies for personal satisfaction, or the bitter and frightened man who lowers himself to gain the approval of anonymous strangers?

Superman, followed by Spider-Man, Captain America and Wally West.

The three first ones are thematically similar, so I guess it is what attracts me. Ultimately, a hero should make the world a better place, and this is the core of their reason to fight.

The easy answer is Superman or Spider-Man. The more obscure is Cassandra Cain. For me it's two-fold when it come's to her. Her beliefs and the lack of friends. The consumption of one lifestyle overriding the other. Then when you pay attention to the other it's so damn hard. I can relate to that.

Martian Manhunter. He's always serious, always stoic, all business. He's lost everyone he cared about. I get the feeling that despite being a shapeshifter he's struggling to figure out how to be human. Which is something I relate to.

Superheroes were probably part of my life from birth. I can think back to being like four and knowing Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Hulk, Wonder Woman, etc. Spider-Man was always my guy though. He was a New York City kid like me, similar values and all that good stuff. I loved the look and it felt so unique compared to everybody else. It was a highlight seeing his balloon whenever my dad took me to the Macy's parade. I loved the cartoons and all of that stuff as well. I remember having two giant sized coloring books or something by Golden I think of Spidey and Superman's origins, and from a really young age, the whole tragedy of Uncle Ben just stuck with me. Having his own decisions backfire against him in such a big way, really made him feel like a regular guy and I just loved the character so much. When the Fox series was on tv, I was ecstatic to have a Spider-Man cartoon not made before I was alive and then when the first Raimi movie was released, that just felt life-altering to young me. Spidey had so much going for him (smarts, awesome costume, awesome powers, hot wife) but he still always felt like a regular guy just giving his all to do right. I have a lot of other favorite heroes (Cap, Wally West, Batman, etc) and I haven't been in love with any Spidey product since Spectacular ended or Bendis killed Ult. Peter but Spider-Man will always be my number one.

spiderman is my favorite because he was the one i grew up watching the most as a kid so it's probably nostalgia for the 90s cartoon but i always like the personality as a kid and i guess i appreciated the "great power, great responsibility" belief as i got older.

as for the quality while i most definitely agree the characters best years are behind him in the comics but i think most people here are a little too hard on the more recent comics. granted most of ASM post-superior to now has basically just been tied into some stupid event which was what killed the book for me but there were some good stories in it too.

Superman. Not even because of his power set (Though, in his own words, flying sounds pretty neat). It's because of his mentality and what happens when he arrives. As soon as he arrives, everyone feels that sudden rush of relief. Superman's here. Everything's going to be okay. He'll fly in and make it just in time to take the hit you can't. He'll beat the impossible odds. He'll save everyone. He'll never stop doing the right thing. He'll never quit.

One of my favorite Superman scenes is actually in Kingdom Come. It's when he comes out of retirement and stops the battle over the river. Now, we, as the audience know that things are not going to go well. But there's a collective sigh of relief.
>"We need hope!"
And suddenly, Superman's there. Everyone's smiling. Everyone is suddenly happy, relieved. Because Superman's back, and everyone knows that that means everything's going to be okay.

In that respect, every day I try to be a little more like Superman. I'll try to help someone who needs it. I'll take on a little extra so someone else can breath a little easier. My coworkers need more time off. We're working on less than a skeleton crew, and the stress of the constant work is starting to get to them. That's fine, I can cover for whatever they need. A sudden expense came up and my sister suddenly now has the very real fear that she won't be able to get everything she needs for the kids. Don't worry. I'll take care of it. Constantly trying to be better, more reliable, despite constantly wondering if it's ever really enough.

Superman encapsulates everything I love about Superheroes. He can do whatever he wants, and all he wants to do is help people. To assure us that everything's going to be okay.

This poor eternally tormented desperate thing.
It is always overwhelmingly amusing to read the disastrous insanity that follows this character.
And don't give me that past-vs-present choice thing, they're the same damned character.
A character like that transcends such limitations of the time/space continuum and can be in two places at once if they want.
So I am a fan of every iteration, variation, manifestation, and flavor they come in.
Always diligent, always valiant, always virtuous, always a little crazy, no matter how much they sacrifice to do right, no matter how broken and utterly shattered they become, even when their own powers work against them, in the end they're always invariably the light that leads the way.
Especially when they've finally had enough and just want to just quit. That's the funny part.
It never fails, they quit and walk away and fate decides that they always have to be the one to step up and suffer horribly for any little victory, it's the core of the character that they always will.
Fighting for a world that hates and fears and never stops hurting them. It's hilarious.

Deadpool. At first it's because he was a funny hero with a dark sense of humor who killed people. Now I like him because I deeply relate to and admire someone that who will do fucked up things for seemingly selfish reasons and has a fucked up way of going about things, but at the end of the day, will do the right thing, even if it's for what he claims to be selfish reasons. Deep down beyond the snark and murder, there's someone who just wants to be loved, to be seen as a hero.

This is never an easy question for me, but it comes down to these two, with Superman as a very close third, however these two have a certain quality that puts them slightly ahead.

First off, I'll say that I've always loved really powerful heroes, I enjoy the power fantasy of comic book heroes and these two have it in spades, wielding the literal powers of deities. And they bring the thunder and the lightning, and that's just badass.

Secondly, I like that they're(classically anyway) happy heroes, not driven by angst, though they both have plenty of reason to be. Their heroism shines through because of their enormous hearts, their kindness and simply their ability to enjoy life and not view their power as a burden. They rise to the challenge placed before them.

Third, they're both humble despite their awesome powers. Pic related is one of my favorite comic moments of all time, despite coming from a really bad crossover. Here are these two gods bowing their heads and seeking hope and guidance, that speaks volumes as to their character.

Finally, and what sets them a bit above Supes for me, their power can be bestowed upon anyone, anyone deemed worthy, and that gives me hope that I too could be worthy if given the chance. I could throw the lightning, I could save the day, as could anyone, and that means there are so many stories to be told.

i just relate to certain aspects of both of them. booster fucks up constantly but keeps putting 120% into every thing he does. he does a thankless, yet important, job, and keeps going even though he's getting shit on at every turn. he's also full of self-loathing and hides his insecurities under a layer of cockiness.

ted resonates with me because he's just a normal dude in a world full of all-powerful beings (booster also, but ted even more so). he has bad problems with anxiety and jokes to hide just how panicked he is all the time.

Pretty faggy I guess but it is Wonder Woman. I was always more of a DC guy, Bruce Timm is mostly at fault for that. I don't really read solo stories, except big classics. I like team ups the most, even if some characters don't get much spotlight.

So back to WW. I wouldn't lie her unform and powers got me first. I still find the semi-original swimsuit armor the most attractive female costume of all time. I always liked she could go toe to toe with anyone and take a beating while most of the comic heroines just jumping around. I really liked the Xena series as well when I was a kid.

She went through a lot of redesigns and after reading almost every related material I admit she has the least number of interesting stories and many of her runs are boring but she gives me hope every day. Maybe because she changed a lot and I saw her best and worst. I love her tender caring supermom personality which can do a hard 180 if someone threatens people she cares for. I love to see her fighting, especially when she mixes super strength with actual tactical combat. I love to see her being uptight and arrogant and speaking up against the asspull boyscout methods Superman & Co. always tied to.

Eh, I'm tl;dr already. Something like this.

The origin story is one of tragic ethical compromise, the lost-in-space element is more classic pulp adventure than anything traditionally good-vs-evil heroic.
Even the times when Radd intervenes directly to uphold values and justice it always feels more like a lone samurai wandering the world narrative rather than cape comics material.
His concept just doesn't fit the feel of a genre defined by superhero battles.
Mind you, it's not that they're bad stories, it's just that they don't feel like superhero stories.

I feel you. Surfer is one of the most non-traditional heroes in comics. It really changes a lot of the trappings to take a "hero" out of a modern day urban environment, since that's what most of the architecture of those stories is built on. Batman and Spider-Man are almost wholly dependent on their cities to make their characters work, whereas Surfer has the whole universe, endless worlds and cultures to explore.

He's really more like a one-man Star Trek without a hard and fast set of laws and rules to abide by other than his own conscience.

Even so, at the heart of the character is still that core of heroism, that willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of his world, that desire to atone for the acts he committed while a servant of Galactus, his unwavering propensity to stand between any sentient creature and catastrophe, it's all still there, it's just in a different package.

That's personally why I love superheroee, because you can take such diverse elements and throw them all together and they still work. I think it's a good thing that superheroes operate under such a nebulous definition, it allows for a super soldier, a radioactive monster, a genius in a robot suit, and a mythical thunder god to all be associated with each other and not seem absurd.

Cap, I think why I love him so damn much is because of the simple fact that he's not particularly special. He just loved something so much that he was willing to sacrifice his own life to protect it

Imagine learning something like that at 8 years old

I also kind of feel the same way about Hal. It could have been anybody besides him, but he was hand picked for a destiny greater than he could possibly imagine. Kyle and John are probably better developed as individual characters, but there's just something about Hal though...
>>
Like everyone, back in the day I used to alternate between Spider-Man & Batman. I still like them to this day, but they've been replaced. Batman would still place in my Top 10 Fictional Character & Top 3 Comic Book Characters, but Spider-Man probably not.

Anyway, buring my teenage years I changed my opinion lots of times. Ghost Rider, Constantine, Silver Surfer and Moon Knight where my "main guys" during that period. Then I got into Doctor Strange & Hal Jordan for a while. After that I just started readin indies, old runs, and I started not really having a "best of" favorite.

But from a point and onwards I got really into Iron Man, and he still remains my favorite to this day. And no matter all the shit Marvel tries to do to him, or no matter how they ruin him, I'll still love him. Why though?

Well, for starters, he's a super-scientist, but he has a niche/area, and is not the omnigenius others like Reed or Pym are. For a while you can like these guys, but after a bit you start feeling jealous and the stories lose their impact due to all the bullshit. In contrast, Stark is a more "believable" genius. With enough effort and some luck, you too, could be Stark.

Moving on, he was a scientist, an industrialist, a womanizer, an adventurer and lots of other things. He didn't fit in just one peg, but rather he was a well-rounded character, and behaved like a real human. The suit was a tool. His business was of great importance to him. He liked fucking super-models. He liked nice things. He was a regular human.

I can't identify with his ultra-rich background, but I could identify with being a lonely child who was pushed into being "manlier" and finding solace in fiction and books. And like Tony, I did understand the importance of having a healthy body and attitude aside from a brain, at least eventually.
>>
>>93982774
Most importantly because he's a man of contradictions. He's a super-hero, but he's firstly an inventor/industrialist. He punches villains, but his main concern is shaping the future of mankid. He's a futurist, but instead of disregarding the past as silly, he uses it as a foundation to build tomorrow. He's a materialist, but still has one last spiritual link. He tries to do what's best, but because he's human he does what HE thinks is best. That puts him at odds with others, even turns him into a villain, but still, a man has to stick to his code. He's forward thinking, but he's not a "break down the borders" cliche. He sees the importance of seperate nations and cultures. He's generally a mix of everything, and like any normal person has views that vary from subject to subject. One day he's a savior, the other he's a devil.

Also, he always gets back up. Obviously I wasn't born in an ultra-rich household, but Stark always made me believe that I could achieve the "American Dream". He's lost his company many times, but every single time he gets back, starts anew and rises to the top again.

Generally, he's both uplifting, and reletable. He's the kind of man you want to be.He sticks to his guns, he never backs down and always finds a way out.

For me it's Supes.

Funny as a kid my favorite superhero was Green Lantern, because of the powers. But after reading some notable Superman stories, watching some movies, documentaries, and even reading/listening to essays on the superhero, I've grown to really appreciate how simple yet effective the character actually is. I'd argue he's the more effective than Batman and Spiderman. Arguably the two most popular superheroes.

People consider Supes to be a boring superhero because he's too good, and is neigh unbeatable, but people tend to focus too much on the raw power that Superman possess, and not one of the main philosophical questions proposed the characters being, which is the most compelling than any superhero I can think of:

>How can a being with basically absolute power be absolute good?

This question goes against human nature entirely, because naturally as people we tend to think that people with absolute power cannot be all good, hell even people think the abstract concept of an omniscient sky daddy (God) cannot be all good despite what religious people say. Also in some religious text, God does come off as a dick. But that's besides the point.

But the difference between that and Superman, is that we're shown constantly that there's basically no "evil" thought in Supermans head, though he has the power to completely rule, or even destroy humanity at any given second. But he chooses not to because that's not who he is, all he wants to do is help people and give people the opportunity to be something greater than what they limit themselves to. It's actually very inspiring tbqh.

And call me naive fucker all you want, but despite all of the cynical shit I see on 4chin and Leddit in the news, or even on a day to day basis in my own experience, I do believe that there's some potential for genuine good in humanity and in myself, and no other character made me realise that more than Supes.

I've never really latched onto certain superheroes before though, except for going through a Thor phase years ago.

That being said, I've always been a huge fan of Toon type characters and just love the weird juxtaposition of him in the Marvel universe, with other characters like Ghost Rider or the Avengers running around. I like that he's not a super conventional hero either, just a really goofy one.

This was one of the first pages that cut me real deep. I know it's just a comic page, but there's something about it that speaks volumes on Superman.

it used to be batman but ever since the dark knight trilogy came out, everyone over hyped him and i couldn't read batman anymore without getting annoyed. so i started reading other stuff and eventually i landed on superman. i used to think that superman was stupid and that he didn't do anything cool or exciting. i picked up superman :secret identity and i liked it. i also grabbed all star superman, kingdom come and most of the new 52 stuff so i could try and understand the character as quick as i could. he became my favorite because he is a good, honest, hard working man who just wants to do his job without anyone getting hurt or having to cross a line that he knows is difficult to come back from.
