Sorry it took so long to start. Wanted to make sure I had the best scans cause you all are worth it.
While I was initially going to just post the major story arcs tied to each of his major villains, I'm, contemplating just storytiming the whole shebang.
>>93951663
Do it all man.
>>93951663
It's interesting that Bendis more/less recreated this scene when he was introducing us to miles.
>Yep, this scene was definitely in the Miles issues. Some may see it as a homage, I see it as lazy. I may end up changing my mind later.
>>93951695
I can do that.
I'm joining the ride. Good one, OP.
>>93951738
>this guy was almost spider-man
Wow.
As much as Bendis' particular brand of writing grinds my gears, I consider this an his creator owned title Powers to be really really good comics. Not everyone would agree that they're great, but solid stories nonetheless.
It's really amazing how much stuff happened plot wise in this first arc, compared to how slow Miles' shit was/became
This will always be my favorite Spider-Man. Bendis may be Bendis, but this was my introduction to comics. I'll always love Bagley's art and I'll always have a soft spot for Ultimate Peter.
I wasn't even mad when he died. He got a good death. For a while.
>>93951519
Peter and Kitty Pryde died too soon.
In retrospect, knowing that Bendis created a great ship so he could break it up and push his waifu with his self-insert makes me want to stab him just a little bit.
Interesting take on Harry Osborn.

Two of the biggest complaints I hear about Miles are that he's just kinda dull and his venom blast is OP as fuck, would you say those hold any weight?
>>93953164
Peter just can't catch a break, but I'm pretty sure that if Flash's parents sued they'd lose.
>>93953205
When did they start to differentiate Main Marvel and Ultimate Marvel with the lower case letters and ALLCAPS?
Here it's written in ALLCAPS and I remember the JMS run on Spidey around this time was written in lower case (which is, you know, backwards)
>>93953309
hands to yourself octavius damn.
>>93952865
The problem is Miles' personality went bye-bye as Bendis just handed Miles all of Peter's supporting cast for no reason other than because he kept killing off Miles' own for no reason other than writing himself into a corner. Then when all the Ultimates started fucking with the whole universe we get even more blatant bullshit of nothing happening for Miles other than using Peter's old cast as a crutch to somehow give Miles more "character" when all he was becoming to Peter 2.0. Also once Bendis made the Omega Red joke, I knew shit was going to get worse.
>>93953324
>>93953324
>which is, you know, backwards
WHile I think that the majority of the lettering in Ultimate Marvel was lowercase, many writers even later in teh series went back to all caps.
Personally, I enjoy the combination of upper and lower case when characters speak but I can't quite put my finger on why. Any thoughts?
>>93952927
As much as I was against the death of Peter, I legitimately feel like Miles has the potential to be a really good character. His relationship with his uncle was like a twisted version of uncle ben and having his mother die in his arms was a pivotal moment in Miles' life that was retroactively dismissed at the end of Secret Wars.
Having Miles have a few new powers did make him distinct from Peter but Miles' venom blast is the most broken ability I've ever seen in comics and he uses to one-shot all of his major blows. It's the equivalent of an instant win button. It's so broken that it has single handedly destroyed Miles chance of being a well written character. There is literally no tension when watching him in action because all he has to do is venom blast and he wins. I think Ultimate Taskmaster was one of the few villains it didn't quite work on.
>>93953375
I agree with everything you posted.
While I was initially just going to do Peter's journey until the end of issue #160, I'm considering doing all of Miles' Ultimate issues (not going to include his series post Secret War).
Even though he didn't have to, Bendis kept to the original story of Spider-Man being a wrestler starting out. The movie AMazing Spider-Man thought it was too good for that shit and decided to alter how he tests his powers and how uncle ben died.
>>93953593
I actually wonder if the Homecoming series (when it inevitably does a flashback) will make him a wrestler too.
that uncle ben is awesome
>>93953470
As a purely aesthetic choice, I always preferred lower case (I was a big fan of the JMS run, which I was reading at the time).
But once the difference was established, I thought it was super neat that we had, say, The Maker talking in lower caps with 616Reed in ALL CAPS.
This was one of my nitpicks when Spider-Verse happened. Ultimate Jessica and Miles talked in ALL CAPS and it was wrong in my mind and it kept distracting me from the main story.
It's amazing how Bendis utilized his Bendis speak in non-retarded ways in this, and it actually flows with the dialogue
>>93953983
Bendis-speak works fine in Ultimate Spider-man. The issue is when he writes every character in every other book as if they're high school chums of 15 year old Peter Parker
So sorry for the delay. It said the image contains and embedded file.
I loved how the game was pretty much a 1:1 recreation of the comic. Exact same artstyle and everything. It was originally gonna be a canon story with the comics too.
Oh shit

In my headcanon its the definitive ending to Venom's story. Honestly I consider this game to have a superior Spider story compared to the Webb movies.

No, you're the best!
As I'm going through these issues I'm genuinely baffled as to why so many people like shitting on Bendis. It's almost like they do it to fit in and look cool which is embarassing. I'm not saying he hasn't shat out some absolute garbage, but the way he is talked about on this board you'd think he recreated the holocaust in comic book form.

>>93955397
I wouldn't. This series was at one point considered one of the strongest Spidey series in recent years. It's garnered a lot of hate from those who would dismiss it due to Bendis speak but I think they're missing out. ALso for the past half decade (at least) Slott had been in charge of providing characterization to Peter and that isn't exactly the greatest.

>>93955493
I thought the worst of it was Ultimate Doomsday Trilogy (which outright ignored Reed's entire motivations) but then he did it again in Cataclysm where he just ignored important developments that Fialkov had made just to "redo" them in a way that fit his earlier stupidity...
I'm still sore about it.
>>93955504
>UFF is good though.
Who said it wasn't?
I LOVE Ultimate Fantastic Four.
I just think that Bendis continually fucked them up later on.
>>93954573
I feel so bad for Crusher, he's the only person aside from Peter that works in this arena.
>>93955542
And I can understand why. The Ultimate Universe was at one point my favorite iteration of the Marvel characters and then Loeb decimated the lineup with Ultimatum and I don't feel it ever truly recovered. Not saying I don't enjoy some of the later stories (Ultimate Avengers, Ultimate Spider-Man vol. 2, and many of the Ultimate Comics lineup) but it wasn't quite the same.
>>93955720
Fialkov though...he definitely understood the UFF in a way I hadn't seen in ages.
My god, the backstory he created to explain the idiocy of UDT and Ultimatum made sense. It made sense!
>>93955616
I remember reading a comic- not sure if it was ultimate- about Crusher deciding to become a heel to earn enough money to save his gym, his marriage, and his life. The first fight, it works- the fans hate him, so they pay so much more to beat him.
The next fight, the one that was to cinch it... was against a scrawny kid in a red mask.
>>93955800
I think that was JMS' run
>>93955536
It sucks dick until Bendis gets on at which it becomes tolerable. The issue where Logan has to kill the kid is ome of the best things Bendis has ever written though. There's an excellent fan short film for that btw. Millar just had everyone be an insurable cunt and it was a chore to read.
BKV gets on and then becomes GOAT. Then Kirkman and the dude from Heroes comes in and shits all over everything. By the time Ultimatum hit I was glad to see a lot of them die. Apocalypse was just that much of a shit show and the drug arc destroyed Collosus so fuck that.
Loved Ultimate X, wish it could have kept going. Had an excellent new direction to take and the final issue showed Loeb had a route he was going to go which is when he works best as opposed to meandering around until the mystery needs a beat. Destroying that premise was one of the worst things Hickman has ever done with Marvel. It was X-Men, but off the books black ops. So off the books that it was led by run away Nick Fury and the fucking cannibal Hulk on the roster. Post-Ultimatum also put the remaining X-Men in a rare situation the X-Men had never been in before, it was fresh and what Ultimate Marvel was about.
Nick Spencer came in and it just completely ignored everything that came before it as far as characterizations are concerned, but by the end it was up there with BKV in quality. His plan for Apocalypse was genius: the four horsemen were characters that died in the universe Jean destroyed to beat Apocalypse the first time with the Phoenix Force from Kirkman's shitty run. Blew my mind. Then we had Fialkov come in and I think he could have singlehandedly fixed and saved the entire line, but Secret Wars came in instead. Hickman wasn't even informed of Fialkov's story about universes colliding, which was the same as his Avengers only better, so they didn't even have an actual meeting point despite it lining up on accident perfectly
I typed way more than I meant toBeen smoking
This was definitely not what I expected for the ultimate rendition of Gobby he he grew on me.
>>93955922
>Millar just had everyone be an insurable cunt and it was a chore to read.
Aw, the dancing mushrooms were aces.
Figure I'll ask here instead of making a new thread. For someone who knows shit about Marvel what's a good place to start for 616 Spidey?
>>93955542
>>93955552
Well, that's the weird thing about Ultimate Doomsday. It feels like Bendis had the idea when writing Ultimate Power or Ultimate Origin, both of which I love I should add. The way the story lines up, the reveals in that one issue of the middle series in Doomsday, it feels like Bendis had planned that from then and then Ultimatum happened so he used that as the launching point for this new direction. Ultimate Doomsday itself seems rushed with bizarre art errors, it's not very good, but this at least seems planned. It's sad remembering Bendis used to be good
>>93955970
Ultimate Norman is such a monster of a human being that him turning into this just makes sense. A manifestation of his own evilness.
>>93956029
The answer is going to greatly vary depending on who you're asking. In terms of recent Spidey, Slott's tenure started on #648.
One could also jump on with issue #546 which was the start of Brand New Day.
You could go further and start with JMS' run on Spidey but I don't know exactly what issue he started on.
You could also start with Spectacular Spider-Man which was written by Jenkins.
Or you could start at the very very beginning with Stan Lee's initial issues.
Ultimate Origin is just good ass shit. It was like Ultimate Marvels
>>93956029
Modern take: JMS, read until you just want to shoot yourself in the head
Classic take: Lee, same as above
>>93956090
Yeah, my main beef with Ultimate Doomsday Trilogy is strictly on a UFF level.
As I have maintained - Reed would have just LEFT.
For just once I'd like to see the authorities actually written like compentent individuals than gun happy psychos. As much as I disliked Homecoming, the fact the police didnt' open fire on him made me happy.
Being Harry is suffering.
>>93956148
I know Morrison was originally going to do UFF so he was probably going to apply his 1234 Sperg Reed to Ultimate Reed, but I think Ultimate Reed was on the spectrum regardless. They way he behaved any time towards Namor and then to just completely turn away from Sue.
>>93956287
Aye, but you got UDT's whole idea of him being a school shooter type.
Reed's character wasn't hard. And he had made development. He spent his whole life trying to leave his universe because he felt he didn't belong. Then he felt being a superhero was how he fit.
He would have just left. Not try to kill and blow shit up.
Fialkov made so much sense of it and Bendis still fucked it.
The fact that Shocker was a thug that would randomly appear during Ultimate Spider-Man's free roaming mode is just one of the many reasons it's my favorite Spider-Man game.
>>93956325
>Fialkov made so much sense of it and Bendis still fucked it.
Is it weird that I consider Fialkov's Ultimates run to be one of teh stronger stories in the Ultimate Universe? It was only a few issues but for some reason it stuck with me.>Hulk getting his hands on the infinity gauntlet was fun as fuck.
>>93955970
So my first exposure to Ultimate Green Goblin was the back of the ps2 game and I mistook him for the Hulk.
>>93956376
Easy mistake. At first glance he looks exactly like one would expect Ultimate Hulk to look like but then he starts creating fireballs from his hands and his voice is genuinely unsettling.
>>93956367
I wouldn't go as far as to say that but it is a pretty decent run so late in the game.

Yeah I always was expecting him to come back for his own arc or something but it never happened. Fucking Bendis. But that's the Ultimate U for you.
Why do artists continuously decide to make Kingpin as large as a freaking dump truck? His portrayal at the end of the Clone Conspiracy makes him look like he could literally eat a human being with minimal effort and that's straight up ridiciulous. Making him a bigger guy is one thing. Making him look like a a planet is just bad design.

True, they definitely aped Spectacular for the accident. But really they couldn't have made him a technician/maintenance guy?

Welp, too late.
HOLY SHIT! It's Detective Christian Walker!!!!!
>>93957410
FUCK YOU AND YOUR LOGICAL THOUGHTS!!!
>>93957381
True, but Max in Spectacular Spider-Man had tons more characterizaton. We saw him pre-accident working with the Connors as well as how immediately after the accident laying in the hospital bed. We saw his struggle as he attempts to drink a cup of coffee. Basically this was a man that had a life that was basically ruined and he wanted revenge on Connors for being unable to change him back. Not the deepest villain of all time, but a hell of a lot better than what we got in the Webb movies.
If there's one thing I learned from Nixon, its that you never tape yourself doing anything.
ALso I hope everyone enjoyed the first part of the Ultimate Spider-Man epic. I'll post another set of issues around the same time tomorrow. I'll also start seeing about posting these to some file hosting website but I can't make any promises.

from what I can tell, the Bendis hate mostly comes from the fact he only writes one way.
On USM, Bendis is amazing, his style really sinks you in to a bunch of kids caught up in a brand new world and not always able to focus. Everythings crazy and chaotic, and that works with his repetitive dialog.
But when you put him on books like Avengers, or X-men, or Capt. Marvel...that style doesn't work. Because those are characters who have spent Decades at war, traveled across space and time and alternate realities. They've faced the worst the universe has to offer, they know there's probably worse out there, and they survive by being focused and having clear communication because they pay attention.
So when Bendis tries to write them in his "ADD Teenz" style where everyone repeats what they, and the other person, have said 5-10 times, it comes across as horrible. And thus RAGE occurs.
>>93955493
sorry about your dad, anon
