So I was thinking of joining in on the storytime of PAIN Weekend and was thinking of doing Batgirl. Which one would be more PAINFUL: Robin OYL, Batgirl Vol. 2 or either run in Batgirl Vol. 4 (Simone's or Burnside)?

Is it the old Batwoman or Batgirl that's with Spyral now?
Because if it's Kathy, that would be a cool story to tell with Steph, Babs, and Cass teaming up against her.

Stephanie is the better modern Batgirl. She's more relatable. They molded chunks of her character to better suit the modern era way better than they have with Barbara.

That's not also to mention that in her small twenty-four issue run she forged better more believable friendships with Damian, Kara, Squire, and Klarion.

It's amazing how much Miller crammed in those issues. It's also amazing that nothing DC has done since with these three runs (Simone, Burnside, and Rebirth). There isn't a single Barbara story currently that Stephanie hasn't perfected. Cass is still the superior Batgirl with an amazing run and subsequent issues after.

Cass' first appearance in No Man's Land is kind of abrupt, but cool. The NML novel does a better job of Cass' time as Oracle's assistant.

To be fair Kane surname wasn't used for a long time. Kathy was killed off in Pre-Crisis and Kane surname never showed up until 52.

So there's an almost thirty-year gap of DC not using Kane surname and instead just going with Cain.

Funny thing is. I didn't intend that. It just feels more natural to me for all three to be together even prior to all that. I've read them since the late 90s to Pre Flashpoint and it made more logical sense Other than Tim/Kon which also kind of does. Dixon and Beatty created a great work in Year One, but it has a few problems - with stakes, with some issues just being about setup for other stuff (Birds of Prey, Oracle, etc). BQM's run with Steph isn't perfect, but it's much richer simply by dint of being longer but maintaining the same quality.

I actually think Year One benifited from being shorter. I think it felt tighter and had less loose ends.
I remember reading Miller's run and being sort of dissapointed about how some of the storylines wrapped up or were abandoned. Although I guess that's not Miller's fault.

Look I know Miller's run has it's problems. But considering the shit he got stuck with? And we still got what we got? The dude turned what should have been a turd (see Batgirl Vol. 2) and turned it gold.

I agree there are problems with it. Cass is one thing (but he was saddled with the NO CASS edict which he was going to overturn if he continued the series, and he was burdened with Barbara who basically was in a horrible place too as well. The rushed Gray Ghost subplot at the end is another. But-- to turn out what he did?

But the Cass stuff? I pin more on the higher ups. Least Miller gave us one more good Cass/Steph team-up (which was SORELY needed).

Yes, I am also disappointed that the Cluemaster plotline didn't really resolve, and the Reapers were wrapped up so easily, and the friendships that were developing were cut short. But the main thing - Steph growing up and winning, and Babs and the rest of the team coming alongside her when she needed them, and letting her work alone when she was ready - that worked incredibly well.

Sorry if I sounded like I was harsh on Miller's run - it is, without question, my favorite thing in all comics, and I'm incredibly proud of my complete run (including Red Robin: Collision, and the single issue of Bruce Wayne: The Road Home) - AND I'm considering rebuying the new collection, at least digitally, to support BQM and Steph. The careful construction, all concluding with "It's only the end if you want it to be" and "Here we go" is really, really strong writing, and the art team of Garbett, Perez, and Nguyen all did some of the strongest design and storytelling work of their careers. I'm comfortable calling it a masterpiece.

It's not really its fault that it was basically the best version of all the Burnside type runs or Tumblr-grabbing Marvel runs, but too early for DC to really see the potential and push it.

Both of her titles are selling at cancellation level or just above, and she's still not really integrated into the Batfamily very well right now - hasn't been since the n52, really, though sometimes there was an effort made, like in Batman and Robin during Robin Rises. I'm personally convinced that DC is riding the Burnside train until it's below 10,000 per month, but anyone think a change before then is likely? And if so, what kind of change?
