The old intro was made by one of those S1 animation studios that had bouncy Flash-like animation. Those are gone now.
The new one is by Rough Draft Korea which uses traditional frame by frame animation. They also made the majority of S2 episodes.
So the intro has changed, but the episodes themselves are the same as in S2, as they are being doe by the same studios.

But, being the buffoon Star is, she frees Eclipsa, asking Star how the spell went, believing that she is young Moon. Eclipsa will find out that some time has passed since she made the deal, and shit will go done from there.

It's funny, part of what made the Toffee plotline so enjoyable is also what ultimately weakened it: very little explicit explanations. Seeing his plan unfold in the background as a wand hand was a brilliant, subtle buildup to his return. However, ultimately there a still a lot of unanswered questions about his motivations and character, even if you can pick up a little bit based on what was shown. Still, I think in this case they could have "told" a little more to balance out the "show".

I wondered this before the movie as everyone was speculating on Toffee death, but now that we've all actually seen it, it seems like this story/arc was intended as the original S2 finale/possibly a series finale if some adjustments had been made. The parallels to the whispering spell stuff, concluding the dip down/Butterfly form/Moon the Undaunted/fritz stuff in the same season it'd been set up, etc.

Probably the S3 renewal allowed them time to go for a more complex plot and so they were able to give it and the other plotlines more time than they may have gotten if they hadn't had a third season. Also it sorta works better for the second season to end on a downer, rather than if Starcrushed had just been a midseason thing.

People say that Jackie isn't believable because she's too chill, which I really don't get; up until Starcrushed she hasn't had much reason to not be chill.
