Pearls seem to originate as a facilitator for the Diamonds. Artificially designed and made custom to order little butlers that can interact on their behalf with regular sized gems and gem technology, which must be a major nuisance considering the size differential between them and their subjects. Though it does raise the question if Diamonds are even capable of assuming smaller forms or that the size and density of their gem demands a body construct that is similarly large and developed. That they also function as arm candy or combination time killers and major-domo's is a useful bonus. From there they seemed to have become a status object for gems of particular importance or meritorious service. It seems cartain Gem castes are more likely to be allowed their own pearls than it does for others; one grunt Ruby thought killing the leader of the rebellion was so praiseworthy that she would earn her own Pearl, as a low level maintenance worker drone Peridot find the idea of even being lent the use of one ludicrously extravagant.
