The movie came out in July of 74 and Punisher showed up in Amazing Spiderman 129 February 74 that same year four months before, the book on the other hand came out in 72. But the book wasn't even that well known till after the movie came out.

The difference is Paul (Death wish book) is slowly corrupted and had no real training and only has a body count of 3, were the movie ramps it up, much like 70s book adaptations (There was a lot more then you think) since there was a serial killer crazy going and everyone was high on street justice.

Frank is a mentally disturbed person who would have hurt his son or wife because of his PTSD if they didn't die, so its better to have him focused on killing evil and corruption instead of dealing with his deep mental problems. He is more like the heroes we saw around the mid 70s to late 80s. So lets not point fingers at a society that had a hate boner for people they think were just stealing and killing for the thrill of it since the nation was shocked at the murder of Sharon Tate in 69.

Frank is a product of his time, death wish was too, Americans had this idea that they had the strength to rise up and make crime pay while never doing a goddamn thing. Coming from Chicago if any one way going to emulate Frank it would have happened by now in the center of the city.

Like pretty much everyone else here is saying he's one of the few good parts of DD Season 2, people aren't exaggerating when they say Bernthal deserved an Emmy for it. If they didn't cut his plot line short DD Season 2 would have probably been better than 1.
