There's no way in hell Nefcy gave him that kind of buildup just to be the Segway into Eclipsa, especially after showing us she likes to keep "throwaway" villains like Buff Frog around. He was still depressed, but Mewni was literally in shambles and on fire when he got there so it's not like he was going to go into "woe is me" mode again. Crying isn't the problem with Steven Universe. It's crying about literally any stupid little thing. SU has no clear idea what a crying moment is. In the situation Moon and company had a very good reason to cry.
