"El Maton" ("The Thug" or "The Killer", I'm not sure how to translate it).

I remember finding some old spaniard comics where they translate Batman's name as just "The Bat" ("El Murcielago"). Superman was called "Superhombre" wich is accurate, but it sounds very weird.

Nowadays I mostly watch and read things in english but I remember some from when I was kid.

In Spain he's "La Cosa" (the thing), La Masa is Hulk, though for the last 20 years or so Hulk just kept his original name since Hulk far more known.

In the Spanish editions of /co/ related stuff most characters simply preserved their original names since ever or, in some cases, their direct translation (here Venom is "Veneno", Carnage is "Matanza" , for instance, while Kingpin is Kingpin). Other examples could be "Duende Verde" (Green Goblin), and Joker, who's simply Joker, though I think in the first comics edited here he had another name.

One particular case I can think of is Dr. Doom, who got translated as Doctor Muerte (Doctor Death). Doom translates as "Perdición" or "Condenación"; I suppose they were just too long.

Deadpool is "Masacre", which is a synonym of "Matanza", but in the movie they called him Deadpool anyway. Guess they couldn't find a good translation for that.

In Portuguese, Doom is called Doutor Destino, which can translate to Doctor Destiny or Dr.Fate.

When Samurai Jack was released in Brazil, Aku's name was changed to "Abu".
Because "Aku", in Portuguese, sounds a lot like "An asshole/anus/etc", because Cu is the word we use to say those things.

I don't really know, but he has had that name since his first apparition in 1930 something; I guess the translators back then found it funny. It isn't a single case; Scrooge McDuck was renamed Tío Gilito (Uncle Gilito) after a departed spanish millionaire called Jesús Gil.

The more interesting thing is that the movies kept the names from the comics. People even complained about why the hell Optimus is called "optimus big chief", people had to point it out that because the 5-year long comic run translated his name as such.

But, before that, they came up with new translations for the movies. Storm ended up as Cyclone, Wolverine was Wolf.

It was kind weird that in the latin american dub they kept the english dub names for the main cast (Serena, Amy, Lita, Rey, Mina and Damien), but everyone else had their original japanese names.

A lot of Brazilians already posted but I'll toss in my two cents.

Wonder Man is called Magnum. The original name was nigh untranslatable - the word "wonder" has strong homosexual connotations in popular slang, much more so than in the US.

The Juggernaut is called The Fanatic, as previously said, but in the very first translation he really WAS the Juggernaut (i.e. "Jaganata"). It doesn't really work in portuguese - it is a goofy sounding obscure word referring exclusively to the Hindu vehicles, without the modern day usage meaning "unstoppable Force"

The French dub kinda cornered itself when calling the first piccolo "Satan" then have an actual Satan appear and having to rename him hercule.
