I wouldn't say Helga is crazy. She just suffers from a shit family life. To confess to Arnold prematurely would led to the one earnestly good thing in her life to possible leave. She's sensitive, poetic, intelligent, and more balanced than her sister.
We were robbed.
>>
>>93912005
Haha, time for insane ponderings.

As a kid I had a crush on Lila. And how Arnold didn't return her affections when he had the chance infuriated me. And how Arnold was far better than his cousin.
On the other hand Helgas mean, graceless and loud. As a kid I just couldn't feel sympathy for her.

Looking back now though there were countless episodes were she went through hell just for Arnold. She really does deserve him. So much so I'm not sure if he's even worthy of her you know?

I feel like the womanly voice still fits the character very well, especially compared to modern cartoons where VAs don't even care to sound younger, like Star.

>But Craig Bartlett confirmed that Helga and Arnold live happily ever after in the end.

This shit gets me more than anything.

The idea of spending the rest of my life with the first person I had any kind of serious crush on back in middle school-high school just feels insane. It happens so much in fiction (for understandable reasons) but it's still strange to me.

Also the idea that anyone who isn't you're one true love forever is just some one night stand/doomed fling/psycho.

What about the more normal instance of people who have multiple long term relationships with occasional dates before they learn enough about themselves and what they want in a partner to find someone to settle down with?

You know it also happens in real life, right? It's rarer than the alternatives and those people are obscenely lucky, but it does happen. And it happens so often in fiction because people like the idea that it can happen. It's "perfect," and that's what people want to believe true love is like, rather than what we all know we REALLY have to go through to find it.

The majority of people don't want to watch characters having nothing but shitty relationships and failed marriages because they already have to live it.
>>
>>93914371
TL;DR

It's a kids show and they'll live happily ever after.
>>
>>93912942

Yeah lots of stuff happens in real life.

>> And it happens so often in fiction because people like the idea that it can happen. It's "perfect,

Yeah, but that;'s the rub. Is it "perfect"?

>>The majority of people don't want to watch characters having nothing but shitty relationships and failed marriages because they already have to live it.

That's what I'm getting at. The idea that if a relationship doesn't last until one of you dies that it's a "failure" because spending your entire life with the first person you latch onto is "perfect" or to be expected. Especially when you meet the person when you're only freaking 13 or so years old.

>The idea that if a relationship doesn't last until one of you dies that it's a "failure"

Okay, so you're retarded. A relationship isn't deemed a failure because it doesn't last forever like a fairy tale. Relationships end up being failures for a lot of reasons, many of which are quite serious. I don't think you actually know what you think you're talking about.
>>
>>93914371
>The idea of spending the rest of my life with the first person I had any kind of serious crush on back in middle school-high school just feels insane. It happens so much in fiction (for understandable reasons) but it's still strange to me.

Well, they are, at the end, fictional characters, and ones from a children's cartoon to top it all. You could make a point of being more realistic and having them end up with other people later in life, but will the audience care about those people? Or will they remember the good old couple with fondness? Not every writer has to go full Meathouse Man and end each and every relationship in misery and division.

(Anyway, Craig himself sought to resolve the "unrealistic eternal love" thing by dividing the two before "The Patakis", then having them reconnect after some time alone by the end of said planned show)
>>
>>93914447
In multiple incidents she sacrificed her own happiness to help out Arnold and keep his spirit high even when he didn't know that she was the one helping him behind the scenes.
>>
I love Helga's thing. She'd call Arnold all sorts of names and generally annoy him to no end but would be the first to come running if anything happened to him. I wish there was an episode with Arnold getting sent to the hospital because of an accident and Helga would be scared half to death and unable to stop worrying about him, all the while trying to hide this from Arnold.
>She'd make fun of Arnold telling him "If your eyes weren't so far apart you'd probably have seen it coming HA!" But she'd be the first to berate the nurses if they came in a minute late or made a mistake in administering Arnold's medicine.
>Helga would end up asking the doctor how long Arnold would need to be in the hospital.
>"A whole month! What do you mean a whole month! Arnold still has to go to school, how is he supposed to..."
>Arnold ends up noticing her worries
>"How am I supposed to make fun of him then!?"
>Helga would end up visiting everyday and complain that Mr. Simmons is practically begging her to give Arnold her notes and homework.
>The visits are only supposed to be done weekly but Helga just can't stop worrying and makes sure that Arnold doesn't get left behind in schoolwork.
>Helga actually spoonfeeds Arnold food
>"Helga you don't have to.."
>"Look, Football Head, If you think that I slaved over 2 hours cooking all this food last night, just so you could..."
>"I mean it was supposed to be for Phoebe but I just cant help but feel sorry for you okay!?"
>Whenever Arnold winces in pain, Helga has to stop the hot tears from coming out of her eyes and her voice practically breaks while asking him if he's okay.
>Helga scowls all the time while looking at Arnold but squeezes his hand while he's asleep.

this will never happen to you
>>

I'm not the one who deemed a relation ship that ends as a shitty or a failure. The person I quoted did. Yeah, the reasons relationships end can (and often are) serious. Our lives revolve around relationships. they are serious things.

I know. I wasn't so much lambasting Hey Arnold so much as noting the popular trend in pretty much any form of media that features any children that have a crush.

>>Not every writer has to go full Meathouse Man and end each and every relationship in misery and division.

Not asking that. Just that it wouldn't hurt to give a character's first childhood crush or a teenager's /college student's dating exploits some context.

The person you quoted didn't say that either, you might have reading comprehension problems. They said "shitty relationships and failed marriages." Both of which are very real, very common things that aren't "shitty" or "failed" just because they ended. You read that guy's post the way you wanted to and misunderstood his point because of it.

Aren't modern cartoons written contrary to that trope, with MC not getting with the crush? Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, jury's still out on Star...

>One of the few episodes where Helga and Arnold act friendly towards one another
One of the few things I didn't like about Hey Arnold is the fact that Helga and Arnold act differently towards one another depending on the episode which happens throughout all the seasons.

Sometimes they're hostile to each other, other times they act like they barely know each other, and occasionally they behave like close friends. Here, Helga gives Arnold advice, offers him a favor, and even teases him with the occasional banter.

If this happened after the movie, it wouldn't be so jarring, because that's how I imagine Helga would act: with some friendly banter and teasing, but also willing to help Arnold openly.

>One of the few things I didn't like about Hey Arnold is the fact that Helga and Arnold act differently towards one another depending on the episode which happens throughout all the seasons.
>If this happened after the movie, it wouldn't be so jarring
Tell me about it. It's especially jarring when Helga helps Arnold out (and it shows that he knows she's good behind the facade), or they just interact friendly one episode, then the next one a similar situation happens and Arnold goes "Wow, Helga, I never knew you could be nice, I always thought you hated me!".

It's like there's never been "Arnold and Lila", where he confides in Helga about his broken heart and offers to walk her home.

Or no "Roughin' It" back in the first fucking season, where Helga invites Arnold and Gerald to Bob's BBQ in the forest and then spends the evening eating marshmallows and singing songs hand in hand with Arnold.

It's like half-continuity, half-unrelated episodic format. Or maybe...

>Sometimes they're hostile to each other, other times they act like they barely know each other, and occasionally they behave like close friends.
Or maybe the two are just written too much like mood-swinging teenagers.
>>

Not just attention. Remember that she was from a poor household and wouldn't have her own cash to pay for a trip to Cheese Festival.

Lila is also smart enough to figure out Helga's love for Arnold and even make her confess. I wish there were more episodes centered on her that weren't about Arnold's crush. How she interacted with Olga in "Big Sis" and Helga in "Helga's Masquerade" was pretty fun, for example.

Yes, but her normal below average looks get contrasted with her "cleaned up" variants like Cecile, Carmen, Hilda, "Sophisticated" and Adult Helga.

Keeping the ugly bully look is part of her characterization: she's divided between attracting Arnold with prettiness like Lila does and revealing that she's trying to get him to like her. Part of the plot in two "Sophisticated"-themed episodes.

Yeah, uh, actually it's not as glamorous as you think, OP. First off, most girls (like 95%) are NOT like Helga when they like/love you initially. They prefer more passive aggressive techniques that almost never work. You try to talk to them and they give you the cold shoulder and play hard to get, hoping that you'll chase them and make it seem like you had to break them down in order to get them to have a date with you. There's 3.74 billion other women on this planet, it's very easy for men to just move on to another girl, unless he's some oneitis betafag or he's just aware of what the girl is doing and is keeping her on the back burner, flirting with other chicks anyway. Girls like Helga who are straightforward with their passions are a rarebreed and should be cherished. Unfortunately, if you're attracted to a girl who's standoffish, she's most likely going to turn into someone you don't recognize because feelings changes girls a lot. She could be tomboy at one time and then completely shy, timid, with a low voice the next.

>No girl will ever love you as much as Helga loved Arnold.
No, I unfortunately know this feeling
and ironically, she at one point was my dream girl. Then she became crazy and crazily obsessed with me to the point of stalking, especially when she became fat and developed poor hygiene.
>>
>>93920013
Neither. It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt.

I like everyone's reaction at Helga's dreamy smile. But Arnold knows...
>>
>>93920017
It happened to me.

She was a younger girl i'd met online years earlier. We had been friends for many years and slowly drifted apart. Years later she confided in me that she had once been completely mad for me but it had slowly poisoned into resentment and hatred when I hadn't "reciprocated it". Only then did I start realising that I liked her, but by then it was too late.

Basically the worst possible outcome to the Helga-Arnold saga.

I decided to rewatch this cartoon again and two episodes still managed to make me laugh: Helga Blabs It All and Ghost Bride.

In Helga Blabs It All, Arnold and the rest of his friends are shocked to see Helga entering uninvited through the coach, covered in dust and the answering machine tape in her mouth, as she slowly leaves the room without turning her back to them, while they all look at her speechless and confused. Literally the moment she leaves, they continue their conversation as if nothing happened.

Ghost Bride: Everyone is panicking. even Arnold, because they all believe they're going to be the next victims of a serial killer ghost. Helga's scream, Harold wanting someone to carry him, and everyone just running for their lives and hiding in a tomb in hopes the "ghost" goes away, just sells it.

I thought my fond memories of Hey Arnold was all nostalgia, but it's good to know the episodes still hold up. What's the HA episodes you still enjoy today, anons?

The plan if this movie does well is that they continue the show into another season of Hey Arnold, not The Patakis.

Thanks, brother

And yeah, I always found it hypocritical that people insisted what Helga doing was so cute but Brainy creepy (he is, but still).

The therapist episode pissed me off even as a kid. Like lady, it's one thing for Helga to write poems about Arnold, having a freaking shine is another. How is that not emotionally damaging?

In spite of my complaints, I do appreciate that Helga is one of the few true morally grey characters in western cartoons (that isn't primarily action).
>>
>>93931288
but don't you see why that is bad. if a man showed this much affection he is evil and deserves to be punished but if a woman does it is a blessing. men receive scraps of affection and so it is considered wonderful or fantastic when a girl gives it out in droves
>>
>>93932779

The situation is shitty any way you slice it, whether Arnold and Helga have their behavior swapped or even their genders.

My main beef with the show is that it seems to insist that Helga can only find happiness by being glued to Arnold's side, when in reality treating an SO as a crutch is degrading to both people. she's a girl that's been neglected trying to get any form of attention from people, positive or negative. You need to love yourself before you can love others after all.

>do something nice to a girl

>she rewards you with merciless bullying
I understand why Arnold went up that swing, when he heard her name. It's always depicted as somewhat cute, but it's terrific. And don't expect support by adults. A "man" should deal with a girl on his own (ignoring the fact, that at this age sexual dimorphism hasn't kicked in, meaning this is the only agespan where girls can hurt you) and if a girl bullies you, it automatically means she loves you, no exception. And dare to defend yourself, just fucking dare, you will have the entire town against you, even your supposedly loving family.
