This movie taught me something about this show.
What the writers to correctly:
Characters and their interactions
Every scene between Moon, Star, Marco, Toffee, Buffrog, the side characters and even Ludo when interacting with other characters was good, only character I didnt like was the King who was kind of annoying the whole time. Even Marco and his families interaction was good.

What the writers do poorly:
plot and storyboarding
>marco showing up out of nowhere even though theres no reason he showed up then of all times (why not earlier)
>every scene involving the king
they didnt work and seemed like they were trying to pad the run time
Ending was mediocre as it missed a lot of potential and wasn't a particularly satisfying pay off

I tried to address this in the other thread; it could be a contract loophole. Moon thought Toffee was dead, went to investigate Eclipsa, saw nothing and then made no attempt to release her as the contract stated, then left.

Only then did the crystal crack because Toffee isn't actually dead, but Moon broke the terms of the contract so some magic Queen to Queen loophole will allow Eclipsa to go free.

Try reading between the lines. Toffee's goal was to conquer Mewni and possibly other dimensions as well. He betrayed the monster king and took command of half the monster army using his immortal regeneration powers as proof of his might. Queen Moon destroyed his reputation and authority, if she can make him unable to regenerate his finger, she can do the same to the rest of him.

With his army scattered and his reputation destroyed Toffee retreated and went into hiding. Years later, his name all but forgotten he came back with a plan to destroy all magic and regain his immortality and resume his conquest.

Mewmans had an inherent edge that monsters feared: Mewman magic. Toffee and his Septarians used their regenerative edge to rally monsters to their cause, whatever it was (Could have been as simple as monster racism, could have been something to do with Eclipsa) but their army was rebuffed when Moon took Toffee's finger. In an instant, Toffee was humiliated, lost a part of himself, and his monster brethren lost their spirit and scattered to the winds like a deck of cards. So he set out to regain his finger, remove the Mewman's magical edge, get revenge on Moon, and execute his original goal of Mewman domination. He didn't bother to destroy the wand after because he knew magic itself was dead.
What he didn't take into account for his keikaku was Star dipping down and recovering the entirety of magic in an instant.
