1980s cartoons were mostly objectively terrible blatant commercials for toys with terrible writing and forced "educational" content that didn't teach anything.

1990s had some good shows but also a fuckton of "cool yo awesome dude" incredibly shitty retreads of old cartoon character, usually as "totally awesome Xtreme" kids or their "cool dude" nephew that never existed before or some shit.

Now, 2000s cartoons didn't have as much shit, but also not too many hugely notable shows.

2010s doesn't have the same cancer as the 80s and 90s. I don't know if I'd say it was a huge change from the 2000s, but there have been a lot of shows that at least make an attempt at being competently written. 80s and 90s had tons of cynical trash. Lots of cartoon writers from those decades have been upfront about knowing they were churning out utter garbage that absolutely no one making the shows gave the slightest shit about. People who remember them fondly do so because they were little kids who were entertained for hours by carboard boxes or crumpled up wrapping paper and have an emotional connection.

(As for earlier than that, if you rewatch shows from the 70s like Grape Ape, it's not like most of them didn't suck hardcore, too. Then you go back earlier and the "good" cartoons were mostly cinema shorts which are always going to be a very different process and discussion from TV shows. The argument isn't valid.)

What is the appeal of these and who watches them? I find it hard to believe that legions of small kids would watch this shit over other cartoons on youtube
