I can't be the only one, can I
>>
>>93862368
I'm not huge on gore in comics. I mean it can be done tastefully and to emphasis a point, yeah, but putting it in all the time is a quick way to get me to drop a book just because if I wanted gore, I wouldn't be reading a superhero book.

Nein, it is clearly Marcos Martin.

Javier Pulido tents to be more refined (like an old ad art in the 60s) in the facial features and draws a very plain Spider-Man.

Martin draws him as thin and muscular and the expressions are more idealized yet based on reality.

Not about the gore. It's about the fact that all other cape comics are inferior in comparison.

Oh you liked that arc? Well everythings retconned because we have a new author who can hopefully increase sales for us. Oh you've already seen Peter Parker go through highschool 100 times and don't care anymore? Well here's number 101 because we have a new author who can hopefully increase our sales.

Invinicible is the only cape comic that's a single continuous story and that's what makes it so great. By tossing characters between authors and constantly retconning events those characters and their stories become meaningless.

I 90% agree.

The other 10% is the times Kirkman uses a shitty trope that normally only exists in cape books to avoid showing growth, like "Surprise, you thought this person was dead as fuck, especially because we showed all the gore, but at the last second they actually survived!" or "Surprise, the main character's new offspring either has rapid-aging powers or some other kind of timeskip shit happened to cause the audience to miss the years the kid was a baby, because nobody likes writing babies, we want to get right to the part where the kid can talk and be an active character!"

I don't think it's unnecessary. It's a bit over the top but seeing characters getting beat down with barely any blood is also a bit over the top in others comics.

It's like all those pg13 movies where people fight and kill each others but you barely see any blood or corpse.

It's good to remind that violence is painful.

It's absolutely true, though. Killing someone means you've killed someone, there's no way around that.

The problem is that people see all killing as wanton murder, when in reality we justify killing things (especially people) all the damn time.

It's deeper than that. The character Garou is, at that point, the biggest threat anyone's fought and he essentially engineered the downfall of the Hero Organization himself, as well as wrecked half of the strongest heroes by himself.

He then fights and gets his shit pushed in by Saitama. Garou, being a martial arts genius, recognizes that Saitama is a complete amateur at fighting, but he is still losing. Garou, through sheer willpower, transforms himself from a regular human into a literal monster just trying to defeat Saitama, but he can't. Completely devastated at how outclassed he is by a hero, the kind of person he hates most, and a total amateur at that, he asks Saitama why he wants to be a hero, what compels him to fight evil.

Saitama literally picks his nose, shrugs, and says, "It's just a hobby for me." To a person so absolutely dedicated and obsessed with villains and heroes that he just turned into a monster and wiped out the hero organization. Then you see that page.

Garou goes on a rant about how absolutely unfair that kind of "justice" is, about how the world was always discriminating against the bad guys and about how pathetic and, essentially, human the heroes are. How they are just normal, failed people like everyone else. So to fix the world, he's going to be the ultimate villain so everyone can unite against him.

Saitama flips the script on him and tells him that's just bullshit and an excuse to act out; he tells Garou he has no desire to be a villain and in reality he just wanted to be a hero, worshiped and in the spotlight, but was too weak or too lazy to deal with the difficulty of being a hero, so he compromised because he had no confidence: he went the easy, cheap route and became a villain. He literally tells him, "Comparing your compromised villain hobby versus my serious hero hobby, I can never lose."

It's the most audacious assbeating a villain has ever received. Ever. Hands down. Read the webcomic it's worth it

Truth be told, most super cape comics bore me to tears because it's so often established that the main character is practically invincible until plot contrives and someone suddenly beats right through that, generally only for drama's sakes.

Why can't comics be like, I dunno, Dark Souls or high speed Quake 3 Arena? Everyone's 3-shottable, but in turn, everyone can 3 shot everyone else also.

But that would necessitate that normal people and simple thugs and soldiers actually pose a threat. And we all know that no comic book writer ever would let Faceless Conscript #2345 get one up on his super baby.
>>
>>93880653
gotta have a hobby.
>>
>>93878417
It was a tie-in comic for the short-lived Infinite Crisis moba game.
>>
>>93897827
The main problem is that they want to use the same characters. It's the old "why doesn't anyone kill The Joker" thingy.
And, like you say, if normal people pose a threat, then you'd either have your hero getting killed sooner or later, or else he has to juuust make it, again and again and again - which gets boring.

But that's just how cape comics are. The question isn't "is he gonna' make it?", but "how is he gonna get out of this one?"
I'm not a big fan of cape comics, but I think the fans are in love with the characters much more than the stories. They want to read about Character X going on new adventures and dealing with shit, not necessarily about a great story. It's about watching the characters do stuff, even if they aren't in any real danger... and yes, there can be great stories in cape comics, but I don't think that's the main thing the fans want.

I think you're absolutely right with that point. And I grant those people that they can like that stuff and read it.

Nevertheless, allow me to whinge some more because I haven't done it in a while; my real problem with superheroes on powerlevels way beyond good and evil is that they make 99.999% of the world population totally irrelevant meatbags that only exist to be popped like gibs baloons for the drama value.

I mean, if someone like that exists, just make him the emperor of the planet. It's not like my democratic vote matters anymore when that guy could just show up any time and turn the entire winning party into hamburger.

In the same vein, I find it almost a personal insult every time conscripts get pasted to show off how badass some new character is. I was a conscript once. My main job was to run in circles whenever the sergeant shouted my way. Being used as a redshirt is personally mocking.
>>
>>93898917
The main thing I find annoying, and it's kinda similar to your rant, is when the cape comics take place in our world (or something 99% like our world). So it's our world with the same problems and conflicts - yet you have heroes who could supply food, water, peace and whatever else you needed to any region on earth. And we still have to accept that these heroes, and villains, roam around the world, yet we still have the same problems as in real life.
Nobody cures cancer, nobody makes great artificial limbs for amputees, nobody helps build a space-elevator or a base on Mars, nobody helps out in Africa, etc. It's like we're told these characters exist in our world, yet they really exists next to it. They never really influence it in any way, it's just the scene on which they fight each other.
And that fits with my previous post - it's about the characters, not about world-building. It's just one of the reasons cape comics bug me.
/rant

Not even the characters are well realized. Superman was based, even in fucking name, on Nietzsche's idea of the Ãœbermensch; someone so powerful he could just detatch himself from normal human condition and do whhatever he wants and whatever he strives for. This is the foundation of every standard cape superhero; yet the very fewest of them actually explore this. And those that do often tell the same stories that the handful of other cape stories have told a thousand times.
>Oh boy I'm so fucking strong, what to do with it
>a) Rule the planet with an iron fist (get punched for it by other superheroes)
>b) Liberate the planet from somveone else ruling it with an iron fist (by punching him)
>c) Preserve the status quo or die trying (involves punching people who want to change it)
>>
>>93899147
There have been instances when superheroes have done stuff like finding cure for diseases and supplying food for third world countries. They just arent really the center point of the story. It's easier too sell a book with a charismatic villain than some faceless disease.

Nah Man, Iron Man 2 shows us why this doesn't work. If you make the biggest guy Emperor, then there are at least a dozen people across the globe at all times plotting and training to take him down, and the next biggest guy, and the next biggest guy after him. It becomes a contest of might makes right. Then one day they decide to take this outside and the corn belt gets blown up. All you can do is pray that the biggest guy has Superman's values and pray that he stays the biggest guy for a long time.

The point is that Garou lacked the confidence to achieve peace through doing good, which was what he really wanted. He didn't believe that he was good enough to be a save the world through being a hero, so he compromised and chose to do evil and unite the world against him instead. However, because he didn't actually believe doing evil was right, he could never succeed. He couldn't fully commit himself to actually being evil. He didn't kill the heroes he fought, and he didn't kill the child he captured. Because he knew it was wrong.
Saitama's argument is that heroism is much more difficult than faux villainy because it requires sticking to your convictions and maintaining the righteous path in both action and intentions regardless of how difficult the situation gets. Garou maintained his intention but compromised on his actions.

Yeah, but apparently there's some kind of incest happening here, according to the filename and some of the replies. The fact that this is involves the Power Pack and is apparently a possible future instead of an alternate reality really makes me want some context.

This. For all the faults of Injustice, Lobo putting out the cigar on Darkseid makes it worthwhile as far as I am concerned.
I wish I knew how that fight turned out, but the fact that we see Darkseid later and not Lobo makes my fanboy heart sad.

One of the (many) limited run series Valiant tends to do. In this case, it involves Archer reading a story about Arthurian legends to Faith. Tales of the Immortal Knight, I think it's called. I only grabbed one of the preview panels from comiXology because it made me laugh.

Anyway, spoilers inbound for X-O Manowar 2017 issue 4. If you haven't been reading this series, I pity you, especially if you haven't been reading since the 2012 run. Because the 2017 run has been leading up to this moment.

She said something about him not feeling in control anymore and him needing to get more confidence and assert more dominance in life. So he flew out and started a fight with Darkseid. Lobo appears later in the series, both alive and in the same timeline somehow.
