You're just exaggerating, and DC was exaggerating back then. Morrison wanted to use him in JLA and just ignore the convulted continuity and DC won't let him because reasons.

Post-Crisis had just that, some continuity errors. DC at least TRIED to have a continuity. Post-New 52 the whole continuity became a walking continuity error. It's a whole world of difference, no matter what you keep trying to believe.
