>Calexit #1
Written by Matteo Pizzolo
Art by Amancay Nahuelpan and Tyler Boss
Lettering by Jim Campbell
Published by Black Mask Studios
‘Rama Rating: 10 out of 10

>“Now let me welcome everybody to the wild, wild West / A state that's untouchable like Eliot Ness” - Dr. Dre

>Calexit is a book that hits your brain like a slug to the chest. You finish it and your ears get a little hot. This is a work of fiction, but it feels so real. And that’s part of the strength of what writer Matteo Pizzolo and artist Amancay Nahuelpan have created here. They imagine that the California secession movement, Calexit, was successful, but to somewhat tragic ends. A state already dealing with massive infrastructure failings as part of a large country would hardly be self-sustaining on its own. But rather than tell the story of how the revolution started or how it ends, Pizzolo and Nahuelpan take the road less travelled - they show us how people survive.
>>
>The reality of these characters’ lives is unsettling, but they are doing what they have to do. For Jamil, that means dealing drugs to local Homeland Security agents, delivering packages and cracking wise. He has a drone with a built-in AI that serves as his companion and enables him to work by keeping track of various customers’ orders ad information. He’s a bit of a scamp with that smuggler’s charm that works so well for Han Solo minus the overcompensating masculinity. Jamil’s easy to like and provides an easy point-of-view character for readers. It’s hard not to root for him despite the contradictions in his personality and actions. He’s a fully formed character, and that’s what is key to this book. That’s how Pizzolo treats all of his characters. We don’t get that much time with Zora McNulty/Donato, but we come to understand her quickly. She’s adopted. She’s the de facto rebel leader. She’ll resort violence seemingly only when pushed to it. But even her patience has a limit, and her anger is real. These are the different ways in which survival manifests itself.
>>
>Pizzolo’s approach to pacing really impresses me as well. Mostly because the story moves but the exposition isn’t overwrought. (In one scene, it’s actually played as a joke.) And for any reader that thinks they need to suspend disbelief to have read these characters talking about the crazy state of current events in their world, I invite you to eavesdrop on basically any conversation going on at happy hour in the wake of the latest storm of tweets. It’s all we talk about. Why wouldn’t these characters?

>And despite the dire circumstances that Jamil, Zora, and the rest live in, this book does have a sense of humor about it. Pizzolo writes a whole sequence outside the Chinese Theater that features some familiar costumed heroes juxtaposed with villains who look eerily (and no doubt purposefully) like Steve Jobs and Steve Bannon. But none of these shambolic imitations of Captain America or Wonder Woman are going to have the save day. Jamil isn't even going to be particularly heroic. He’s going to do the job that gets him some cash and keeps him out of trouble. Survival remains the key theme, even in the face of evil.
>>
>Artist Amancay Nahuelpan does an incredible job bringing this world to life, and that helps make Pizzolo’s work so much more effective. By creating a California that looks recognizable but just slightly off, Nahuelpan is able to sow the seeds of discomfort in readers. It all looks right, but something is wrong. L.A. is overrun with a faceless enemy. It’s unnerving. And the faceless helmets of the soldiers helps underline the characters’ existence as well. Nahuelpan’s expression work is excellent, whether he’s using it for comedic or dramatic effect. We only get to see the characters’ reactions to the soldiers. We don’t get to see how the soldiers feel in any given situation. Their presence in any scene is in human and it draws your eye in every panel. Danger is always present. Colorist Tyler Boss keeps his palette fairly simple, opting for consistency over experimentation. It works well because when he does stray from that the intention is clear, whether is a wash of red in a panel signaling impending doom or bright pinks and oranges to show the changing light of the day.
>>
>Calexit is the most political book on the stands right now. Hell, it might be the most political book of the year. But it doesn’t succeed just because it builds a story our the worst fears some of us might be able to perceive under our current administration. In part, it succeeds because at the end it acknowledges the context of its existence. The creators use the backmatter to speak directly to their intentions and to show readers that resistance isn’t futile. Pizzolo interviews activists and fellow artists about the ways they resist and how their personal politics intersect with what they do. A comic book isn’t going to change the world. I know that. You know that. The creators know that. But art can be part of what spurs people on to do things bigger than themselves. Calexit is a triumph not just because the craft and the storytelling is good, but because by the end of it, it asks “so what are you gonna do?” Moments like this never last. Books like this don’t either.

>>
The reality happens of calexit is that the secessionist wouldn't get the whole state since northern is Republican, so there goes all of their agriculture. The US military also operates several bases in the state like the San Diego Marine Corps boot camp so the calicucks would either have to buy the land from the feds or figure out a way to overwhelm several heavily armed bases. Next, Hollywood and silicon valley, which drives their economy, would leave the moment the state secedes so there goes your economy. So now all you have are a few heavily populated coastal cities with no military, trade agreements, and no solid borders. You also no longer have access to water from northern Cali and neighboring states and probably now have to contend with Mexico, who might be considering some reconquista. Good job libs

>>
>>93859328

This.

As someone who lives in DC, let me tell you that you are both being played.

"Anyone on the other side of this indistinct political line I just drew is totally a subhuman idiot who you should never listen to and you totally outnumber" is just bargain-bin tactics for both sides.

The great lie of american politics is that we have a Right and a Left. We dont. We have a Right and a Further Right. Compared to other western nations, out political divide is fucking trivial, and the differences almost inconsequential. They need you to attack the very idea of the Other Team on sight because otherwise you might realize how little difference there is in the choices, and that means voters who are more likely to waffle back and forth between parties. That happens enough, and candidates have to actually campaign outside of the current swing states, and no one wants that.

Speaking of which, how do people understand each other in Star Trek? Can anyone explain the Universal Translator to me? US has bases all over the world, I dont see why California being a separate country would prevent the US from keeping ownership their bases. It'd probably be part of any secession negotiation.

You guys all really need to read this essay:

https://status451.com/2017/01/20/days-of-rage/

>People tend to think that the Right will be an awesome, horrific force in political violence. The SPLC’s donations depend on that idea. Righties tell themselves that *of course* they’d win a war against Lefties. Tactical Deathbeast vs. Pajama Boy? No contest. Why, Righties have thought about what an effective domestic insurrection would look like. Righties have written books and manifestos!

>It’s horseshit.

>The truth: the Left is a lot more organized & prepared for violence than the Right is, and has the advantage of a mainstream more supportive of it.

On an individual level, the right may be more prepared to win a civil war, but on an institutional level, the left is.

Think about it this way: If someone like this guy mentioned here >>93859789 had been a right-winger, he'd still be rotting in jail. But since he's a left-winger, he's got a cushy tenured job, celebrity status, and the last President was a disciple of his.
>>
>>93861199
That article's old news. Antifa folded like a lawn chair once the righties started hitting back. Chomsky was right, if lefties want to play the "who can perform more brutality" game, they're going to lose.
>>
>>93861234
What parallel universe are you in? My friend got attacked on the street just last week for wearing a MAGA hat. The only reason things seem to have briefly calmed down is because colleges are on summer break. And half of antifa is busy rioting in Hamburg.
>>
>>93860813
Because lots of rich people live in the state and they have to pay higher tax bills. It's certainly not because of most of the hipster lib cucks and even with such large tax sponges, the state still has to borrow money to fund itself because it shits money on stupid shit
>>
>>93860834
Believe me, if California wanted secede, most of the country would let them because we fucking hate them. Californians are like a plague, everywhere they go, rot and destruction follow. Let them self quarantine themselves if they want, they'd be doing the rest of us a favor
>>
>>93861339

That doesn't disprove the fact that ANTIFA likes to pick soft targets.
>>
>>93860907
This. The US has plenty of leftist parties and organizations in the country but most of the country isn't stupid enough to give them power which is why they never became relevant. Bernie cuck rode his wave because of popularity from young idiots who think socialism is cool and means they'll get free shit.

True. The military will hesitate to fire on civilians right-wing or left-wing.
Unless the civilians fire on them first. With antifa, I can easily see that happening.

What's more likely is that the cops, who've been steadily militarized over the last two decades, will be the ones rounding up and/or shooting civilians.

It's called a police state for a reason.

1. Next to no one in California actually wants this
2. If it did happen, it'd be a massive disaster for both the remaining US and California, California LITERALLY is the 6th biggest economy in the world, the results of losing that would be a big disaster for the country, not to mention the loss of the bulk of the tech industry. inb4 flyoverstatefags think their state that produces nothing and take all the financial aid actually matter
3. When Obama was president, there was a vocal minority of Texas that wanted to succeed. Florida tried the same thing in 2015. Montana tried the same thing in 2008. South Carolina and Georgia tried the same thing.

>the army on our side
In the hypothetical scenario of a 'HURR DURR REPUBLICANS VS DEMOCRATS' civil war, at least a quarter of the military will go rogue and join... What would we call it? The Midwest Coalition? New Sons of Freedom (NSF)? The remainder would likely remain loyal to the federal government who, make now mistake, will start purging the living hell out of the Democrats and will destroy ANTIFA.

Unless this turns into a Russian Civil War type of disaster. Then in that case; you're waging a two front war against battle hardened marines on one side, soldiers and airmen and a few pissed off generals on the other, and the only branch who would support your cause in significant numbers would be the navy. And the fuck all they're going to do.
>>
>>93862426
>6th biggest economy in the world
To be fair California's largest contributors are tech and entertainment, and nothing about California as a region necessitates they stay there to operate effectively. If Cali seceded, which obviously would never happen, there's no reason to believe the tech and entertainment sectors wouldn't relocate to Texas.

It's improbable and dumb. With California's gun policies, there wouldn't be enough weapons, or people who know how to use them, for a revolt. Besides, it's only the coastline who would even WANT to. Once you get over the mountains and away from the cities, everyone is super conservative, just like here in Washington. And THOSE are the ones who are going to have most of the guns. The Gangbangers would have some, but it's not like most of them know how to properly use them.

A VERY pryrric victory on the left's side. Tens of millions left dead from famine and disease thanks to our infrastructure and supply chains getting fucked. Many cities will be left as hollow ruins from both the bombings, and the three day sacks where the Dems let their conscripts run rabid just to maintain discipline. Wide swaths of the country are still controlled by militias eerily reminiscent of the Russian Green Army or Geronimo's band. It will be a decade before the Midwest is pacified, two for the resistance organizations to get completely dismantled and destroyed.

A bunch of blacks trying to get into Europe by claiming 'WE WUZ REZUGEEZ'. The few that make it in are attacked by arabs and hostile africans immediately upon arrival. A lot of Mexicans will jump back across the border if they live close enough. Most will be stuck starving, working in fields as the local Democrat Conscripts stand guard, willing and waiting to gun a few wetbacks down if they try to run. Alaska, due to it's close proximity to Russia and it's relative distance from the battlefields, may secede from the Union with the Dems not even lifting a finger.

A few cities would've been spared the rampaging rednecks and blacks, instead becoming irradiated ruins. If there's any good thing; the people who started this war are mostly dead, murdered by ANTIFA for not being ideologically pure enough. But then ANTIFA got purged with most of it's members executed by their replacement. Now a new NSDAP; scours the country in search of... Well, anyone who isn't too happy with the current regime.

The interesting thing about a calexit is how long the white liberal minority will be able to hold their views on non-whites.
non-whites who aren't brainwashed by whites tend to have socially conservative views, they're religious, oppose gay marriage, tend to be less tolerant of other people.
If the new California republic opened its doors to immigration, but operated as a democracy, it would quickly lose many of its liberal values that it holds as a US state

As the "old guard" of Republicans die off, it'll be up to the younger generation to see about moving away from the "problem issues", like abortion and charges of racist policies that continue to weigh the party down.

Likewise, the Democrats could really stand to evolve on certain issues like gun control if they wish to remain relevant in the future.
>>
>>93862925
Immigrants, like urban blacks, are super conservative BUT vote Democrat almost unanimously for 2 reasons, welfare/social benefits, and the perception of Republicans as racist old white men or the identity based narrative.

You'd have Democrat leftist policies on an institutional level, it would just be juxtaposed against hyper conservative views on a cultural/peer to peer level. Like how Sweden is overwhelmingly left, but it doesn't stop refugee enclaves from setting up no-go shariaclaw zones and raping all the blonde swedes (followed by the swedes apologizing for being raped because it might get the refugees deported).
>>
>>93862995
I was strictly talking about the armed population only, if you assume a reasonable 1/10 gun ownership among the blue counties and assume that literally everyone in those red counties has a gun they are still woefully outnumbered by blue weaponry.

>>
>>93863127
No, I'm suggesting that saying things like this are wrong:
>Once you get over the mountains and away from the cities, everyone is super conservative, just like here in Washington. And THOSE are the ones who are going to have most of the guns. The Gangbangers would have some, but it's not like most of them know how to properly use them.

>>
>>93863173
Anon, you're missing the point. Not many people live in the red regions on that chart. Its literally desert or mountain counties. So even if those people did leave California, 1. where would they even go because they'd still have to find homes in other states and 2. it's not going to be a big hit to the California populous anyway.
>>
>>93862925
Nope.
The American right hoped for decades that the social conservatism of Hispanics would turn them into fiscal conservatives. Instead their hunger for gibs turned them into social liberals. The average Mexican fence jumper doesn't give a shit what the gays do to each other as long as he's getting money from *somewhere*.

ANTIFA will when they start conscripting en masse. They already have a serious manpower shortage due to significant portions of the military going rogue. Something tells me the blacks dragged out of the starving ghetto hordes will be particularly enthusiastic and easy to control; the Dems will let them loot and plunder all they want, and won't get in their way if a white woman catches their eye. Even as she screams ever louder.
>>
>>93863345

That sounds more like a liability. Armed forces that ostensibly are on "your side" but mostly just damage your own civilians and infrastructure aren't exactly useful for force projection.
>>
>>93863239
But without the republican boogeyman to stop the gibs, they will have no reason not to vote against social liberal values. Republicans are basically the glue that tie the democratic party together. "without us you'll be slaves again, without us you'll be deported, without us you'll lose your welfare, etc." Without the republicans, non-whites will have a lot more political freedom and won't have to stick to the democrat's policies

Also I would like to bring up that even though Trump was portrayed as Hitler, but with hispanics instead of Jews, he still got about 30% of the hispanic vote (its not that much, but its still 30% more than you would expect). Hispanics aren't as blindly loyal to the Democrats as blacks are.
>>
>>93863235
Actually, the secessionist wouldn't be able to touch the red areas because it would be an act of war and the full force if the military would bear down on the secessionists which would be especially damaging with so many military bases in the state. Not to mention the independent groups that would go to California just to assist simply because hate the state or liberals in general
They would not walk away with the entire state in any scenario

If the Dems want to win the war, then they better double down on terror tactics and the complete dehumanization of the enemy. The Airforce firebombing farms and seed nurseries to starve the republicans, hitting the infrastructure so the Republicans are in the same boat they are, the navy bombarding civilian ports in hostile territory, painting middle class whites (then hispanics, then blacks, eventually virtually anyone who isn't a shabby peasant) as the eternal boogeyman, giving poor people a chance to discharge a lifetime's repressed anger... That's how the dems will win.

But they're basically like an edgier, more political Image Comics. Not something to tear your hair out over IMO. Four Kids Walk into a Bank is an enjoyable read, some of their other stuff is less enjoyable but more artistically interesting.

I mean I google and I get this dude. This is from Breitbart:

>Taxpayer money in the German city of Halle is being used to renovate a building in which left wing extremists have been squatting for years, anti-mass migration NGO Einprozent has claimed.

>In 2001 members of far-left groups like Anti-Fascist Action, or Antifa, and others began squatting in “Reil 78”, a former children’s home, in the city of Halle, Saxony-Anhalt. The government of Halle is now looking at spending €150,000 of taxpayer money to renovate the electrical system in the building, the non-governmental organisation (NGO) claims on their website.

Do you want to explain more? Renovating a building at the local council level is not funding antifa.

I agree with this partly, in that they say like 'half true' when there is no evidence either way and that makes no sense, but things can be mostly true - i.e. multi-part statements which are generally but not entirely true, or a statement which reflects a true situation but gives an incorrect figure.

This comic reminds me of that indie comic where a military genius is born as a black female teenage gang member and she wipes out LA cops. I remember this one page saying she was like napoleon reborn or something.
>>
>>93867418
Didn't Napoleon lose?
>>
>>93867295

It's not but drone strikes are very situational. In the scenario given the military knows that hostile targets completely control a given area. Military doctrine for that situation is heavy bombardment and then sweep in with ground troops once you've turned the entire block into hamburger for a mop up.

The purpose of the second amendment is so that we don't have those easy to bombard clusters forcing the government to move house to house to find out exactly who is and isn't an insurgent exposing themselves to danger all along the way. The second they have confirmation a given area is a hotbed of hostile activity they're going to let the artillery do the investigating.
>>
>>93867418
Let me guess, LA didn't become an absolutely chaotic hellhole without police, did it?
>>
>>93867464
To be fair the second amendment was written when a large militia could go toe to toe with a standing army.

That being said (and don't get me wrong, I support the second amendment), an insurgency is very hard to fight when you do have to worry about stuff like war crimes and civilian casualties, which is why most the wars fought in the middle east are such an absolute shit show despite the invaders generally having significantly better equipment and training.

>>
>>93867549
I also imagine there is a larger surplus of soviet era weapons in the Middle East than in downtown LA
>>
>>93867549

There's also the fact that, unlike the Middle East, the government in a US Civil War 2 situation would likely want to avoid completely obliterating the infrastructure they're hoping to take back.
>>
>>93867549

Even back in the revolutionary days the principle was generally the same. Destroying a single munitions store could have been devastating to any effort to oppose the government but when everyone can bring their own rifle, gun powder and ammunition to the fight it makes it a lot easier to establish a real resistance. The second amendment ensures that the government only has a monopoly on violence when it governs with consent.

I mean, I'd imagine a fair number of politicians would go all "Fuck those traitorous scum. Shermans March two: Electric Boogaloo when?"

>What happened, /co/? And more importantly, is this going to be a trend that other Republicans can emulate of a flash in the pan?

Trump was harder on illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is percieved to take jobs away from lower class legal americans.

I suspect it depends more on the D's ability to keep unions, the working poor, and illegal immigrant supporters under the same tent, as they really want very different economic policies.

But polices regarding the social safety net and government handouts are probably more important.

Altenatively, the black community could get rich enough that voting for more social services wouldn't necessarily be in their best financial interest, but I wouldn't bet on that outcome in the near future.
>>
>>93867898

Indeed. Shit like this is why is so hard to get anything done.

Like, I dont agree with the Republican party line on a lot of stuff. The past 7 months have been pretty cringy for me. But I dont doubt for a moment that the people voting are, in their eyes, legitimatly of the belief that they are trying to improve the country or help their communities.

We obviously have some disagreements on what improvement looks like, or what path to success works best. But I wouldnt punish any of them for a difference of opinion. Unless that opinion turns into physically harming other people, obviously. Law and all that.

Both sides need a smack on the head and the reminder that the root of democracy is discussion and compromise, not holding your breath until you get your way or treating the opposition like enemies to be purged.

We really dont want a sunni/shia situation where any time power changes hands its years of revenge for what the other guy did. Once you get into that kind of cycle theres no way out.

True but we did have somebody kill a petty shoplifter in Orange County because they thought he would be a vigilante cowboy. Every semi-automatic rifle magazine must be pinned to 5 rounds (except Garands which can be 8 thanks to how the clip works, and .22lr which also has no limits though they did recently ban a specific ruger 10/22 magazine)
Manual action firearms (bolt actions, pump actions, etc.) have no magazine limit.
Handgun magazines are limited to 10 rounds.

Here's the thing though, the laws are really fucking stupid, so you can legally use a ten round LAR-15 magazine inside and AR-15 (which are restricted meaning they have to be registered, while VZ-58s, mini-14's, SKS's, M14's, Tavors, etc... are non-restricted) you can legally hold 10 rounds because the magazine is marked as a pistol magazine. Also another trick it that you can use beowulf magazines in a regular AR-15 and load around 15 rounds of 5.56 inside of 5 rounds of .50 beowulf into it which is also legal.

Also we technically can own full capacity magazines, they just have to be pinned to only hold 5 rounds, which is probably what you saw, look at any Canadian VZ-58 and you'll see a little shiny rivet on it for a good visual example.

The law is basically designed to be so confusing that lawyers have to argue more about what is legal than whether you broke the law in the first place.
>>

Isn't a real thing, it's a liberal invention. Show me where in the Constitution it says that men have a right to marry other men. You know. I started thinking about what would actually make Californians revolt within realistic parameters and I realized what people are missing. What people don't understand is how our kinship ties are much stronger than our partisan ties and is shows how little people understand us.

Conservative and liberal Californians are rarely as separated as most people would want them to be. Half of my extended family including my uncle and aunt who may as well be a second set of parents are right leaning people who voted for Trump while me and my immediate family are leftists. The people who think they can go in dropping lefties like flies are stupid as fuck and are going to be sorely surprised when they see a bunch of rednecks in pickups unloading on them for shooting their hippy ass little brother. You think all of "Jefferson" is going to leave the lefties to their fate until you get an entire town turning into a right wing guerrilla force in the redwoods when you bomb Berkeley and maim Cletus' daughter and first in their family to go to college. Their guns were hidden and illegal under California laws which their Bay area cousins voted in, but none of that matters now, only that the army is on their shit-list for fucking with their family. Incidentally an invasion of California by the US military would probably be the quickest way to mend the relationship between California and its Northern counties though not permanently. As far as mass deportation is concerned, you could wind up with a chain of Californian right wing Trump voters who are fighting for Mexicans based on family/clan ties all due to one member panicking because his girlfriend was getting deported back to cartel territory.

While the US will absolutely win and the streets would run red with Californian blood, it will be a shit show the likes of which we haven't seen since Vietnam. People severely underestimate the role of the right.

Trump was also seen as a strong man. Voting Dem wasn't getting anyone anywhere and he wasn't like any of the other repubs. Combine that with his drain the swamp shit and its worth taking a risk voting. Hell Trump even made this a campaign point during his travels.

No, it would benefit the GOP to divide California, so it would pretty much be guaranteed to pass Congress. The thing stopping it from happening is that the current state of California is controlled by Democrats who don't want the state divided.

Better to have a president who is superior on every other issue, but went back on this one point, than someone who is even worse on both that point and every other issue.

There's loads of places in America with comparable gun laws. Also, maybe you want better places to hunt than fucking Utah.

On the other hand, if fucking mormons is your thing, absolutely, 100 percent go for it. You could probably have a greencard two years from now if you started fishing for a wife now.

Tax plans should be simple. The idea that the tax code MUST be a massive, 20,000 page monstrosity that lets the very rich and very poor skate by while fucking over the middle class worker is a liberal fiction. Trump understands this, which is why his tax plan is simple.

First, he's so far left of mainstream republicans that he would count as a democrat in most of the country. Second, his election bypassed the primary process, so that the democratic vote was effectively split in a dozen ways.

I'm a Greater LA metro boy and don't want California divided. I would rather we work through our issues first however difficult.

Yet if there were ever a serious effort at splitting, our vote and state senators would have to be removed from the situation. Being in California should be their decision and theirs alone, only with negotiations for infrastructure and water rights, debt issues and maybe how to handle in-state vs. out of state tuition for northerners already enrolled in state colleges. I may not like the idea of Jefferson splitting but I also want to be graceful about it and make sure it has the best chance of prosperity possible. They don't deserve to be jerked around.

I kinda find it suspicious that a news source is telling me not to trust other news sources that aren't them.

Also you would do well to remember that the far left is fringe for a reason. Hell the LA Times, the leading newspaper of what many call a SJW hellhole was more than willing to call out college protesters as being damaging to free speech. Most people don't even care about politics and there is still a vast swathe of left who can be brought around on gun control so long as the right doesn't fuck it up.

Bullshit. The left only supports free speech when they are the ones talking. The moment anyone else tries to get in a word in response they scream that they're a racist/sexist/homophobe/islamophobe and demand that the person be censored. That is if they don't outright violently attack the person. Just look at what antifa has been able to get away.
