In fact, both Gunnerkrigg pages are good because they take into account the flow of how an eye will jump across the page. Stopping at the right and then going back to the left side and down one like a type writer is okay for pure text, but eyes get caught following visuals. Like that "GET OUT OF MY HEAD" image where the red text draws your attention around the page then makes fun of you for it. Jumping back to the left is when an idea is completed, so there's a break in the flow. Otherwise, your eye keeps searching for the nearest thing. The borders help keep things in check to break it all up, but in a single panel, things are going to get more fluid.
