It's sad, really. Youtube killed Newgrounds, then they killed animation. I mean I know Newgrounds was becoming a bit of a shit hole as it was dying. I didn't care for some of the effortless "lol what if I animate a game sprite punching a dildo" videos that got promoted to the front page like it was comedy gold. I don't know why Tom Fulp felt like that's what should have been promoted.

Animators are at an impasse with Youtube. A small core of fans can keep them alive, but to endure they need to reach new fans. To reach new fans, they need to be promoted. To be promoted, they need to reach tens of thousands of people. That means they either need to spend stupid amounts of money on advertising, or they need to play the Youtube game.

But the Youtube game isn't what people actually want from animation. Get it? It's good Max found a way to both animate and play that system, but it's really not his maximum potential, and you can tell he gets bored with it because a bunch of his videos weren't real reviews. Grandma's Wunker Bunkers was obviously a joke he wanted to do, so he pretended it was a "Star Wars" review to bait in viewers. Patrons would probably prefer he just go all the way and make a Wunker Bunkers ad cartoon, but Youtube wouldn't promote it because what are Wunker Bunkers? Wunker Bunkers aren't fidget spinners.

So you die slowly by isolation if you make real content, but alienate your core fans by making Youtube content. What to do? Nobody knows. Nobody except FadYoutuber27, who loves this system and thinks nothing should change because he has a new drama alert every Friday and it nets him 16 million views. Him and Youtube itself, who runs ads on all the drama alert channels.

I miss it because the internet never again had that era of relentless creativity.

It's as if the edgy doodles of the middle school outcast, the mastercrafts of talented industry professionals, the autistic reimaginings of some video-game obsessed college kid, and the earnest scrawlings of artists in training all found their way into one medium. No matter who you were, you could make your vision come alive and share it with everybody else. People were ambitious, hard working and reckless, because in that little pocket of the internet, fresh ideas are king. At the time, it was untainted by greed, monetization or corporate reach. Sure, some had ambitions of fame, but who could blame the diligent animator and coder from wanting a little exposure for their efforts? And in turn, they inspired others. I remember spending a lot of time in the "judgment" submissions of the site, and its profound to see what an influence you could have on others who wanted to be a part of this, too.

I miss those times.

And every time I think about how much I wanted to contribute that era and never did, and how I will never again have the chance to live in it again, it makes me want to keep living just a little bit less.

I think it's unfortunate that everything has become about secondary discussion rather than primary creation. Egoraptor makes his living by basically discussing other people's content. Same with Oney doing his Let's Plays. That's what Max was doing with Brain Dump.

Meanwhile Youtube is gradually strangling other sources of content. Cable television is gradually dying as online entertainment replaces it, but high quality stuff can't live on Youtube. It's an awful platform for real cartoons and real TV. I guess in the future, any real content is going to be on Netflix? Amazon Prime? I don't know, but if that happens we'll have less choices instead of more. Instead of three or four competing networks, we'll be down to two, and not running enough content to fill 24 hours because they don't have to.

I was just thinking about this shit at work today listening to the season 1 finale of Sleepycast when they were reminiscing about Newgrounds. I miss when animators were the "cool kids" of the internet and didn't have to rely on sexy clickbait or following trends to get notoriety. The fact that you animated at all got you attention from both fellow artists and people just fucking around on the internet. Even if your art was trash you still got props for putting in the effort.

I like his stuff. It's more of a guilty pleasure, though.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. Just as much as I enjoyed There She Is!, Tarboy and Katan, I had fond memories of jankier things like Spider-Powers for Christmas, LegendaryFrog stuff and Tonberry and Cactaur.

I think part of the success of old newgrounds stuff was the novelty of seeing animated ANYTHING on the internet, let alone weird edgy satire animation.

Now it's a little passe. I think there'd be more of an audience for internet animation that's actually high quality and delivered regularly, something genuinely impressive enough to compete with the traditional animation connections.

The main problem being that creators are obsessed with making fluid theatre animation instead of limited tv animation style animation. It'd be easy as fuck to animate something like a hanna barbera show these days, with a few added benefits due to technology. But everyone is so averse to recycling animation or using limited but well drawn frames like anime. Hell, they dont even know how to tone it down with scale so they dont get forced to do insane overambitious stuff.

Worst of all is they just dont write any scripts, so most internet animation tends to be pretty disposeable "pretty artpiece" shorts or doodle animation.

He left the Fighting Game Community (FGC) and focused more on YouTube Let's Plays, reviews, vlogs, etc. He became infamous throughout the years as a horrible video game player with no skill and a lack of compassion towards anybody, even his fans.

I wrote the first-ever Hi Hi fapfic back shortly after the show came out (I'm happy with this fact for some reason,) but after I stopped updating it because I didn't know shit about proper spacing or grammar at the time, people started writing their own better than me so I just went back to enjoying the show.

Humans are awful and deserve the upcoming catastrophes

So HDD or Max, whatever - pretty good animator. I actually first saw his videos when he did that MLP-Parody shit, a couple of those were OK but then it just lost it's steam. The Ask-Blog was pretty ok.

His Jerry series were interesting and he did some other stuff, it seemed a bit of this edgy-punk-"its not a phase mom" style to it. Some other parody videos were quite nice, like the Animal Crossing one.

Brain Dump had some good episodes too, again he has talent and even a nice voice. It's a shame he seems like such a loner-douche-type.

I think he said something before about having severe OCD/anxiety issues and not being able to connect with people, so he just stayed in his house making animations. Pretty sure he's a virgin too and never had a relationship - again this is common in his self-deprecating humor. It might be cool to befriend him but I have a feeling he'd just push anyone away with super-autism tendencies.

You know despite everything, I actually believe may improve in the future, in one way: YouTube will either cease to be or change dramatically. I remember back in 2010 when me and my friends found out about Facebook, and soon enough, every high school student had a account and used to chat with their friends, then little by little it became the ultimate normie site filled with middle aged moms posting Minion memes, now a good chunk of kid I used to know on FB have either deleted their accounts or hardly post there anymore, the same thing will happen to YT. Not only have they been fucking animators now they have also gone after Let's Players, and internet Criticts handing out strike after strike. These people are YouTube's bread and butter and now they are being purged, you remove them what do you have? Spider-Man and Elsa videos? Cancer prank channels? Both of these video formats are targeted towards the extremely casual viewer, this is why I believe YouTube will be come just like Facebook, a place for boring adults to spend their time in. The question is where will everybody go? I'm surprised Tom Fulp hasn't tried to come up with a phone app for NG, considering smartphones are what's killing internet creativity

I think the issue with Newgrounds is that they're dependent on donations and still allow "mature" content - or nudity that is - and in the States a nipple means no advertising. Newgrounds is staying alive, but not expanding. Though who knows. Sexualobster still gets 30k views for new videos there, and that's not a small number of people. Maybe Newgrounds will rebound as a result of it being pointless to upload animation to Youtube.
