Nova is basically a bunch of space police. Just like there are multiple cops in your city, there can be multiple Novas. There is no real solution here. The old guard doesn't really sell. Wolverine got killed, because the sales on his books (they needed two volumes just to set up his own death) were tanking. So just bringing him back and getting rid of Laura wouldn't magically guarantee great sales.
The new guard also doesn't sell.
Mixing the old and the new wouldn't necessarily sell. Look at the brilliant recent Nova series. The sales just weren't there, despite the quality of the title and respect shown to both the Novas.
