There's a dark multiverse that exists under the multiverse and it starts leaking through. Hawkmans was investigating this mystery as it tied into Nth Metal but then disappeared in the Dark Multiverse and Batman picks up on his tracks after getting exposed to that pit in Endgame. Turns out Nth Metal is short for Ninth Metal and its the same metal used throughout various DC artefacts.

All of this ties into a lot of Morrisons ideas with the original 3 tribes, the Return of Bruce Wayne with Barbatos and Multiversity

This is pretty much a crisis in all but name, though Snyder even called it Dark Crisis in the book but DC are trying to avoid overusing the Crisis title after Final Crisis.

I took that Joker meant the metas that Batman was looking for, like Duke who turns out to be a Meta of some kind. Joker wank is daft inevitable but it wasn't that bad. It's not like he somehow destroyed Hal's constructs or anything, he sucker punched the guy while he was wearing a less powerful ring (if I remember correctly, the Guardians gave him another ring for this mission, right?). Duke has just been there: there wasn't any wank, they're just making him kinda useful after all the times he was just there. Duke's biggest issue is that he's not wanked or used, but that he's in a lot of Batman books doing nothing. He's a sidekick that Snyder doesn't want to admit is a sidekick and now we know he's a plot device set up all this time for Batman to continue his investigation on metas who got their powers from the metal and whatever comes from this event.

So far, only Joker wank seems to be the main issue, and if all metahumans, not just the ones Batman has been keeping and eye on besides Duke, all got their powers from this metal, then who cares? The only times the meta human gene was ever an issue or important was in Invasion, where they set it up and then never really did jack shit with it. They'll probably throw that fact under the rug like they did with Invasion, so I don't really care that much for "METAlhuman" or whatever.
