The original set of writers got tired of the show and they all quit, one by one.

There's a reason even good and popular shows tend not to last beyond the 7 or 8th season and if they do they turn to shit because the creative team is completely gutted and replaced. People get tired of making them and run out of things to do with the settings/characters.

I doubt Groening cares much anymore. The Simpsons has been on for so long and had so many showrunners, producers, writers that he's probably content to let it do whatever it wants as long as it's still on the air making him money. Hell, he's probably more interested in length achievements at this point than quality. Most people accept that its golden period was some of the best television in American history, that's probably good enough for Groening. I've heard some of the DVD commentary's from later seasons make it sound like Groening or the producers are seeing it for the first time. Wouldn't surprise me.
